Mental health check-in (week of 10/16)

I saw a request for this in the other thread and decided to kick it off. This is for anyone struggling with mental health issues, from anxiety to depression to bi-polar disorder or whatever it is. Whether you have a formal diagnosis or not, this would be a place to discuss current struggles, breakthroughs, etc with individuals who are in the same boat.

I didnt think we’d want a formal structure of X number of questions like other check-in threads due to the fluidity of what we may be dealing with week-to-week. So feel free to just post some background and what you’d like to discuss this week. Open to suggestions for future weeks.

  • @zizzabell523 thanks for sharing your story. It’s so good to hear that medication has helped you with your depression. It’s improtant to weigh all health factors, mother and baby, during pregnancy so keeping on your medications with the watchful eye of your doctors, sounds like the right move.
  • Ceridwen77  If you don't mind me asking, what do you think (if you know) caused your anxiety to peak?
  • My only diagnosis is PPD but I've had severe anxiety my entire life. I'm on a low does of Zoloft now and it helps so much. I'll probably want to up it when baby is here, but for now it helps make me functional.

@justsuzie  FX for good results! I know waiting is even harder with anxiety.

@Ceridwen77 thank you for posting this thread!
  • @firefliesandfjords thanks for the kind words. I’m glad you were able to find a medication that works for you. Sounds like a long road to get there but that it all worked out in the end is great.
  • @ivyvines6 so sorry about your past experiences. Sounds like you’ve found the perfect care team this time around.
  • @fraufarbissina so sorry about your late pregnancy experiences with your doctor. I’m so glad to hear that you’ve found a good group to work with this time around.
  • All my anxiety started my last pregnancy. I was throwing up constantly and had a feeling like my stomach was about to pop and I was full of air. My OB couldn't figure out what it was so he sent me to a gastro who wouldn't touch me because I was pregnant. Then I started getting eyes full of eye floaters. By the time I gave birth my eyes were full of them and no eye doctor would take me seriously. They all told me I had to adapt to it because the surgery to remove them was risky. I couldn't adapt and became suicidal. I finally found a doctor who did three surgeries on my eyes to get rid of the floaters but my eyes have new problems now such as constant flashing arcs in my vision . I have anxiety about my vision every day . I'm too depressed to even brush my hair at this point. I'm off my medications due to pregnancy but my OB wants me to go back on them because she thinks the benefits for me outweigh the risks... but I don't want to put my baby at risk
  • For anyone on meds during pregnancy check out www.mothertobaby.org.  It is a great resource to find out what meds are safe and proven to be so with actual medical studies. You can also talk or chat one-on-one with one of their counselors and ask as many questions as you need.
  • @allie89xoxo Have you heard of migraine auras? I get them without the migraine headache part; I just see the visual aura. It looks like zig zagging multi-colored lights in an arc shape that start at one side of my vision and then slowly move to the other side (can take like 30 minutes to an hour to pass through my vision). Some people get them worse than others. Here is one link on them if you think this might relate to you: https://www.webmd.com/migraines-headaches/what-is-a-migraine-with-aura#1

This is a pretty accurate (not 100%) image of what the aura looks like to me when I get it:

My doctor said it is common to get them more often during pregnancy because of our increased estrogen and hormones. I do not have them constantly though, so I'm sorry if this isn't helpful. I'm so sorry you are going through all this.

Also, thinking of all you strong ladies. As someone with varying degrees of depression/anxiety since HS, your courage and strength gives hope.

  • Yay for this thread. It's really nice to know you're not alone!

i have anxiety and depression. The depression was bad while TTGP, but has improved. I'm really nervous about PPD again. I was in such a fog I didn't even realize I had it the first time around. It took me a year to come out of.

My anxiety is in check for the most part, but situationally I have panic attacks. Mostly social situations or when I'm super stressed.

I've never found the right medication balance. I have tried alternatives like acupuncture, hypnotherapy, diet changes, yoga and meditation...I havent found a counselor since moving to a new state. I'm pretty picky, but still trying!
  • Yes I have hand this happen a few times. It is very scary !

I second this. My first therapist was an angel and I loved her! The second was absolutely terrible. She was all about trying to force me to journal and do art therapy, even though I told her repeatedly that I become detached from those mediums while doing them. The third was just kinda there. Not bad, but not great either. I'm looking for a new fit. We'll see.
  • Today I saw my boss talking behind a closed door with someone who works in a department adjacent to mine.  They were obviously not happy.  It was hard to convince myself they weren't talking about me.

My last therapy round I had some hypnotherapy.  I was hesitant at first, but now I'm a believer.  It's not a magic cure by any means, but it really helped me circumvent my negative subconscious patterns.
