Insomniacs Unite!

Hello, fellow MOTN-ers!

Early pregnancy I would have lamented this as a horrible "symptom" in the symptoms thread, but at this point, I have managed to accept that I will, in fact, never sleep again.

Just wanted to give a shout-out to anyone else in a similar situation and see how y'all are handling it.  If I was on my own I'd try to use the time to be productive (doing chores, reading baby books, etc.) but DH is stubborn about his sleep (has an early-riser job) and wakes up super easily if I so much as sniffle, so I'm pretty much stuck in bed quietly playing on my phone.

AFM, I've really taken to reading juicy subreddits (on Reddit) and have probably lost hours of my life to this new guilty pleasure. I did listen to the Sleep With Me podcast until using earbuds and a Snoogle at the same time got too strangle-y  :D

Side note: Have I just been on Diclegis so long that my central nervous system doesn't understand sleep cycles any more?

Re: Insomniacs Unite!

  • I also have horrible insomnia! I am a night shifter and sleep during the day, which makes it even worse! I feel like there is so much more I should be doing. I can usually go to sleep, but am awake to pee within an hour and a half or two hours, which then leaves me awake. Some nights I can go to sleep, others not so much. DH stirs easily so I can't even get on my phone without him waking up. Normally I'll just get out of bed. Lately, I've been taking a warm bath. This helps calm my achy back and legs, which then does help me ATTEMPT to relax enough to go back to bed. Yes, I do know you have to take warm baths with caution due to baby over heating or whatever.... But momma also needs something to relax her body!!! I make sure it's not super hot to cook baby, and limit my time.

  • Im usually up all night mostly. SO works second shift so he sleeps from 5-1pm and so ive gotten on that schedule since i dont work but a few hours on weekends. However, this am they begun to reshingle the roof of our apartment complex so we went to bed at 5am only to be working up at 8am and i have yet to be back to sleep. My back hurting soooo bad prevented me from taking a nap when they finished at 7pm. I just hope we dont get woke up again tomorrow morning or i will be one CRANKY B*TCH lol
  • @elcd458 I listen to the Sleep with Me podcast at least twice a week!  :)  It's usually when I wake up at 3am and then can't fall back asleep.  I put the sleep headphones on my Christmas list because I'm also struggling with the earbuds issue.  I'm also all caught up on Netflix.  (Friends, that 70s show, Fuller House, etc).

  • I fall asleep super easy at like 8pm... but then I get up to pee in the middle of the night and I’m up for hours! So annoying but I’ve basically accepted it. I mostly play on my phone. Check Facebook, bump app, play candy crush. Usually go get a snack and play with my Cat. Haha Usually I end up falling asleep about 30min before DH alarm goes off and then I’m up again for the day
  • I have always had some insomnia, coupled with 7 years in the army getting up before the sun has never been a big issue for my daily function. But since becoming pregnant I feel like a zombie most days when I am up before 7. I have been spending the hours in the dark on TB, doing the Facebook scroll and recently the OCD has kicked in and I have made a crazy to do list/ daily calendar for everyday until our due dates and into maternity leave and returning to work.....I have a bit of a crazy down to the detail planning issue.
  • @aheqoefamily  I should be using the time wisely making lists like you, but then it gives me anxiety and I get too wound up! I had a talk with DH yesterday and he said it was OK with him if I needed to get up and walk around or go downstairs as long as I waited until I was sure he was asleep first, LOL.  I think he's a light sleeper but he claims as long as he's snoring first, he won't wake up long enough to be bothered.
  • @elcd458 it's helped with some of my anxieties but I think it only upped my SO. She usually rolls over asks if Everett and I are good and then just crashes again. I get so jealous of her easy to just got back to sleep that quick while I am up for the day most times.
  • Currently working on my delivery Day info list,to do list(more DHs) lol and hospital bag list. Oh and also bi weekly questions to ask the dr. I get so much info out of all you guys and the articles on the bump. It's been easy and not too stressful for me because I do alittle at a time. I'm totally a list person. Lol.
My whole plan is to not have a plan but be prepared as much as we can. Xoxo. Nursery, bassinet, car seats, hospital bag(hubby had his packed first, he is just too excited)etc. everything is done and ready. These things we can control. I have no idea how my delivery, recovery, coming home, breastfeeding will go, so I'm doing these things to help ease my mind. Oh and I've started frozen meal prep already too! :)
  • I can fall asleep no problem, but I wake up about 3 and I'm up for the day.  It's currently 4am and I'm making pizza rolls and watching Teen Mom-productivity at its finest.
  • @andipandicWed121369 wait what.....sleep headphones??

  • How did I forget about this part of pregnancy?? Nothing productive being done over here because I just want to go back to sleep!
  • I thought i had finally found a good pillow arrangement but nope. Back to square one
  • I thought I was doing well tonight. But LO got hiccups and now I guess I’m up from 3:30 on.... and will want to sleep in the middle of the day. Ugh.
  • DD has a cold, so she was coughing and crying a lot night before last, which kept waking me up. Last night, she actually quieted down around the time I went to sleep but woke up once, and after that I just could not turn my brain off (plus LO kept kicking me). I also have DD's cold, so my head hurt from sinus pressure, further disrupting my sleep. UGH

  • It's so frustrating! I'll wake up to pee, but since I'm not 100% awake I'll be thinking about something weird from a dream as if it's real. Then I'll get all hyped up about the dream thing, and by the time I realize that I'm freaking out about nothing, I'm wide awake.  Like, last night I was apparently having a super vivid dream about a messed up project at work (that doesn't really exist) and I after I went to the bathroom I was still trying to figure out how to fix it and getting stressed.  About 5 minutes later my brain was finally like, "Hey dummy, that's not a real thing....." but the damage was done, and I was up for about 30 min.
  • Joining you ladies tonight. I am so tired but have been laying in bed for an hour just tossing and turning. I hate not being able to sleep. I remember after dd was born she and DH would be snoozing away and I’d be wide awake. I’d fall asleep about 30 mins before she began to fuss around to be fed. It happened over and over. I am not looking forward to that.

  • My sleep schedule is so jacked.  Having a flexible work schedule has been a blessing and a curse this pregnancy.  I now generally fall asleep in the neighborhood of 2 AM and wake up between 9-10 AM (with a few quick trips to pee somewhere in there).  Every time I think to myself "@elcd458, you're better than this, get it together!" and vow to set an alarm around 7 AM no matter how little sleep I've had, I have one magic night where I am out cold by 11 PM and wake normally. I then think, "hey, I'm cured, must've been a phase!" ...only for the cycle to begin again the next night.  I feel so disgusted with myself.
  • @elcd458 i am right there with you. I had a great night sleep with pillow formations and thought yay i can sleep but it only lasted one night and i was right back to sleeping two hours at a time. I know its just us getting ready for sleepless nights but geez :-/

I want to go to bed now (10:00)... but DH is upstairs throwing a fit because the Nationals just lost in game 5. I hear hammers and saws... I don’t even want to know. Dude. Chill out. No way he’s doing this when we have a kid here next year. This is the only time he has anger issues. So annoying. This is the one time of night that I ever get any sleep.

ETA: now of course he’s passed out asleep and I’m just sitting here pissed off at him. Fun night.
  • @elcd458 Same here. I'm tired, but not sleepy and I have a doc appointment in the morning.
  • It's 3:30 am and I've been up for an hour.  Between my karate kid which literally feels like he's kicking me on a mission to get out, and my dog barking for absolutely no reason, I'm officially wide awake.  Anyone else?

  • @marley629 ME ME ME....i am supposed to be sleeping since i have "work" tomorrow but here i am checking for new posts on here instead my cat cuddles up to go night night lol. SO said i could quit if i want too but im still on the fence about it.
  • @Marley629 me too. It’s now 3am west coast time. I was sleeping so well... then my dog had to pee, now I’m having acid reflux and can’t sleep. Grrr
  • Sorry I missed you ladies last night, I was up probably until about 5-5:30. Getting sooo frustrated! The worst is when you have to pee 8 times while you try to sleep. About every hour and a half up I go, and of course so uncomfortable I cant get back to sleep.

  • I'm able to fall asleep pretty easily, but the whole getting up to go to the bathroom 3+ times a night then getting re-situated in the Snoogle in getting old- fast. I'm so tired all the time.
  • Omg I got a full nights sleep last night! I can’t remember the last time that happened! I got up 3 times to pee- but magically fell back asleep each time. I hope you all get one of these nights.
  • DH decided to throw up last night right as I was about to fall asleep. So I was jolted awake by him sprinting to the bathroom and then couldn't get comfortable again u til after 12. Then of course, I had to get up for my 5 AM pee break...
  • @Skcobb  That sucks.  Hope he feels better.  We've had two (relatively traumatic) incidents of DH puking unexpectedly in the middle of the night in the last few years (sidebar: why are sick men so helpless?) so now any time he gets up to pee in the middle of the night and isn't super quiet, I wake up in a heart-pounding panic thinking he's about to barf everywhere.
  • @elcd458 thanks! He had Bad Daddy's burgers after the fair yesterday, and thinks it was all the greasy food  :D
  • I'm normally a good sleeper, but pregnancy insomnia is creeping in. It's 5 AM now and I've been up since 2:45, and have to get up at 6:45 for work. Can't decide if it's worth it to try and sleep more or not at this point! I did take care of some financial stuff, sent some work emails, and found a cute print for the baby's room, so time is not totally wasted   :)  Nice to get on here and feel solidarity with all of you other mamas!
  • @shellac835 I also had a tough night but no productivity to speak of. I am so tried but my hips hurt so bad there are no comfortable positions. I need to go see my chiropractor, but it really hasn't helped much lately. I'm glad to hear you got some stuff done! Maybe I would feel better about not sleeping if I could knock some stuff out.  Hope your day is better and tomorrow night you get some rest!

  • @kln62689 I'm so sorry to hear about your rough night and hip pain! I'm grateful that I just can't sleep but am not in much pain or discomfort. I'm sure you have, but have you tried using a pillow between your legs or a pregnancy pillow? I swear by my Snoogle pillow. I did find that doing some productive things the other night helped with some anxiety I was feeling, but tonight I woke up at 3 and am not feeling anxious about things, just can't sleep. Best of luck!
  • @shellac835 Yea, I use a snoogle too. It helps a little bit I had 3 bulging discs in my lumbar region before being pregnant, that causes bursitis in my hips, so side sleeping is difficult for me all the time. I dream of the days where I will be able to guiltlessly sleep flat on my back again!

  • The cold I got from my daughter has turned into coughing at night. I barely slept, though transferring to a chair out of the bed helped a little. Hopefully this will clear up in a day or two!

  • Ugh tomorrow is going to be miserable.  It's 4:40 am and I've been up for an hour and can't fall back asleep.  DH works tomorrow and my toddler will be awake and roaring to go in about 3 hours.

  • @Marley629 ugh I’m sorry. I’ve been up too for about an hour myself and decided to do some Christmas shopping for my nieces and nephews.  And now I can’t find these fingerling monkies anywhere! I have a baby shower today, so not too bad of a day for me. I hope your toddler is not too much of a little monster today for you.
  • It's gonna be a long frickin night. I can't fall asleep! I'm so uncomfortable.
  • Last night I was just awake for a lot of the night. DD's coughing didn't help, but even when she quieted down, my body was just not having it. UGH

  • I flip from side to side throughout the night- so my dang tdap shot kept waking me up when I rolled onto it. Grrr
  • Between my insomnia and hurting hips/back, DH not being able to go to sleep, and DD having a cold, looks like I'm getting about 2 hours of sleep tonight. I know it's going to be a (long) while after LO gets here that i get back to sleeping 8 hours, but omg can't I just enjoy these last few weeks of no middle of the night feedings while I can?!?
