Mani/Pedi

Just realized my nails are looking atrocious and I need a new gel mani/pedi. Is this safe for pregnant woman? I'm seeing mixed review online about gel manicures and wanted your take. Thanks!

Re: Mani/Pedi

  • I don't know about the gels, I'll probably get just a standard mani/pedi at some point with either my mom or my sister because I'm due for a girls night/day with both of them soon. I don't paint my nails a ton but I'm sure I will on my own a few times too

The thing that worries me more than any of it is the fumes in the salons from acrylics. I know they're breathing it all day and thats why a lot of them wear masks, but it just doesn't seem safe to breathe to me (thought this before being ku though)

Do you get the gels that have to be uv set? I've always wondered why there hasn't been a bigger deal made about that because you're essentially putting your hands in a tanning bed to set the gel. But all in all, I know nothing lol sorry

  • It's fine to go. The funds aren't great ever, but it's not like you're in there for hours. If you go at not a busy time, you might even be able to have them do both at the same time.

Mani/pedis are such nice pampering when pregnant...especially when you can't reach your feet anymore.
  • I got gel mani/pedis both of my last pregnancies. If you're worried about the fumes, gel is better because you'd go less often. You're exposed to the fumes for like an hour. Sure, it's not ideal. But it's a treat and not all the time.

  • I went all last pregnancy and do occasionally now. Safe in my opinion..
  • I went this week and all last pregnancy.  The risk is so minimal with the fumes and UV light for gel.
  • I should have added, when I mentioned the UV light for the gel, I wasn't even thinking pregnancy related. I was thinking skin cancer related. oops

  • I got regular (not gel) pedis throughout my last pregnancy, every 3 weeks or so, once I had a hard time reaching my feet. I went with regular polish mainly for the price. I was in there for maybe 45 minutes max including drying time. The fumes were more noticeable thanks to all my hormones and made me a little nauseous at times. But, since you're not working there, you should be safe for a mani-pedi. My feet are insanely ticklish, so it's more torture than relaxing for me. But I sure do love the calf massage!! I will probably start going in a couple months to help keep my toenails at a self-approved length (short!). The salons I frequent usually have no problems actually trimming my nails. I know some salons prefer to only file toenails, so keep that in mind as well.

  • I'm glad this thread was put up. I was always told regular mani/pedi's are fine but no gel. But I couldn't quite figure out why, it's not like they are putting the UV light over your belly. I pretty much only do gel, regular polish is pointless for me because I'm so hard on it.
  • I treat pedi's like I do when I go to get my hair done. (I have really bad grays - like, 60% gray) I always get the earliest appointment and go in a weekday so there isn't a whole lot of fumes all up in there.

  • Thank you ladies! I too love my gel manis @rachelg777 I'm a teacher and I'm so hard on my nails that I need a gel manicure too. It's also my "me" time!
  • I just got one today :) I had them done during previous pregnancys too
  • Do you tell them you're pregnant for pedicures? I've heard foot/ankle massages can be a bit dangerous, but I don't know much about it

Some people think it can trigger labor.  I've seen zero evidence.

I do know massages won't typically take you in the first tri, but that's not because the massage can cause anything, just because MC is more common in the first tri and they don't want the liability.

Yup. I used to be a massage therapist, and in school they said that it might be smart to avoid any chance of your work being linked to a miscarriage.

I've been planning on waiting until after the first tri to get a pedicure. Not because I think it's a risk, but because I really messed up some of my toenails doing some long runs a couple months ago, so now I'm just telling myself that I'm avoiding pedis during the first trimester so I feel better about not being able to get one. Hopefully they're grown out by then!
  • I have been getting a prenatal massage every week since 7 weeks.  My OB and therapist actually recommended it.  I get that the massage therapist might want to avoid it for fear of being accused, but IMO it's ridiculous to think a massage can cause a MC.   The massage therapist should specialize in prenatal massage because it's very different than a regular massage.
  • I'm playing it safe and bought a more natural nail polish at Whole Foods that I plan to bring to the salon with me.

But, like, the salon is still going to have fumes, regardless of what polish you put on your toes...

  • I went this past weekend and got a pedi. It just feels so gooood :)
