Re: FTM Questions for STM+ September Edition

  • @vflux33, DS never slept in the swing but I definitely appreciated having it to put him down in. I would recommend buying used if you can. Then selling as soon as they outgrow it. Realistically you won't use it for a crazy amount of time. So even though it will definitely take up space, it's not going to be a permanent thing.

  • How important are keigels? Should I start doing them now? Can I really get a prolapsed vagina if I don't have a strong pelvic floor??
  • @sarahhedger7 I'm no doctor but I've never in my life (intentionally) done keigals and my vagina is fine. Idk, if you want to do them, go for it, but I guess I never thought they were that important.
  • @sarahhedger7 eh, I did them with my second pregnancy and still ended up with a prolapsed bladder in the end. She had a shoulder dystocia during delivery that just destroyed me. So do them if you feel good doing it. It certainly can’t hurt.
  • Thanks @gazelle319! The brand matters to me for purchasing but for renting maybe not. I'll check them out.
  • @bettyvonsomethingstein I just had the hard realization that this is going to be my reality.  :#:D

@sarahhedger7 A strong pelvic floor is super important, not just for pregnancy and birth, but for life. Kegels are super easy to do once you get the hang of them, and honestly I do them while I'm watching TV, working, whatever. Once you're used to doing them you can multitask. I'm also very VERY pro women going to a pelvic PT after they give birth to help with incontinence issues and/or pain postpartum.

    Here's some additional info! https://www.telegraph.co.uk/wellbeing/pelvic-floor-dysfunction/importance-of-pelvic-floor-muscles/

  • I'll be a STM and am at 17w5d and still have not felt baby. I thought I was feeling flutters every day or two a couple weeks ago, but have felt nothing since. I was just wondering if theres any STM that have still not felt baby.. I know its still a bit early but I thought by now I'd be feeling something. Especially since its my second. My next appt isn't for another 2.5 weeks and I am stressing out!
  • @triplejplus1 I've been wanting to ask a similar question. I'm 16+3 and still haven't felt anything, not even flutters. I am get what I'm assuming are Braxton hicks everyday though, which feels way too early. I'm very anxious for my appointment in two weeks to hear baby's heartbeat. I felt flutters at 16 weeks I think with my daughter?
  • @ShawnnaO My appt couldn't come fast enough! I don't think I felt anything with DD until around 21 weeks last time. So maybe I'm just overthinking, but I've been have absolutely zero symptoms and its really making me uncertain lately!
  • Can u/s techs tell you the location of your placenta? I am having a 16 week u/s Monday which I requested for my peace of mind so I won't be seeing the doctor after. I am 15 + 5 and haven't felt anything yet though I know it's early so I'm wondering if I have anterior placenta (or whichever one is what causes you to feel the baby later in pregnancy).

  • @triplejplus1 @ShawnnaO I am 18 weeks today and just had my appointment Wednesday. I haven’t felt anything consistently at all and the OB was very reassuring. Even as a STM, I might not feel movement, and it might not be consistent until after 20 weeks. I still haven’t felt anything since that appointment either. She said after the anatomy scan they can tell me the position of my placenta too and that may be why. I haven’t had an ultrasound since 10 weeks and she said that a lot can change in 8 weeks so to check the placenta position at the anatomy scan. I wouldn’t worry too much—baby is still pretty small in there. <3
  • @muggle621 my us tech told me I have a posterior placenta at 13 weeks, so they should be able to tell you!
  • Kiegals are great for maintaining pelvic floor strength. If you have any issues PP with pelvic floor weakness, however, that usually requires the help of a urologist to restrengthen the muscles with the use of therapy. By all means do the kiegals, but don't be surprised if they aren't much help with damage after birth. Also, CS moms can have weakened or damaged pelvic floors as well even if they don't attempt a vaginal delivery prior.
  • @Muggles81 they told me at 12 weeks that I had an anterior placenta, so just make sure to ask. I had to ask both pregnancies since it's not something they typically tell you. Medically, it's not important, but I wanted to know since it impacts timing of feeling baby.

  • Any STMs who have a SO who regularly takes sleeping pills? The conversation in UO this week has me wondering. MH and I are both chronic insomniacs. I got to a point a few years ago where I trained myself (through a lot of trial and error and being obsessive about sleep hygeine) how to sleep without medication. But he's a bit worse than me and never got there, so he has a prescription sleeping pill that he takes every night. I don't know yet how much I'm gonna want or need his help at night, but I'm worried if I'm sick or there's an emergency how that's gonna play out. If anyone went through this with a previous baby I'd be really interested to see if you have any tips or insights. I've talked with him about trying to go off of it, but honestly he has been on it for over 4 years, there is so much going on with his work right now, and he was such wreck before he started taking it so I don't want to push too hard.

    Not a FTM
has anyone experienced painful movement with their second? The last couple of days I've been feeling bigger movements, possibly bursts or stretches, that are more painful than fluttery. It's right in the region of my CS scar. Could the scar tissue be making it more tender?
  • @Gingermom15 movements were always painful with my daughter, because I had a posterior placenta. I've got a small torso to begin with and she would pop my ribs out of place all the time. Do you know the location of your placenta? Otherwise I think it being scar tissue is a valid possibility.
  • @ShawnnaO I believe they said posterior fundal. My son was anterior, so it does make sense that I would feel the movements stronger
  • @vflux33 no advice there, and I’m sure you know this already, but just be super careful if you ever try to bedshare with babies. It’s not recommended if anyone in the bed has taken that kind of medication.

No offense to other people who bedshare or plan to but we ruled that out, strongly, for completely different reasons years before getting pregnant. I do appreciate the warning though!
  • @vflux33 I agree with you! But I have accidentally fallen asleep breastfeeding and woken up with baby next to me. So terrifying!

I never bedshared or nursed in bed, but it is so easy to fall asleep with baby nursing. It's so scary when it happens. I would binge watch tv or shop on Amazon during nursing sessions to stay awake.
I spent a lot of money on Amazon while breastfeeding lol
  • @heatherdubrow @Gingermom15 Ooo yeah I'll have to watch out for that. Well, hopefully my history of insomnia plus there being 2 will lessen the probability of my fatigue taking over. We are planning to move them to their room after a few months so at least then if I do momentarily fall asleep it won't be near my drugged H :#  In the meantime I will try Amazon for sure!
  • @Gingermom15 LOL my mom used to do that with HSN and QVC in the middle of the night before the days of Amazon.

It would be he dumbest things, too. Like crock pot baggies for all those meals I never cooked. Or some other item I was convinced we needed
  • @Gingermom15 Prime all day. I think it made me feel more productive?! Especially when I wasn't leaving the house much, and my days were spent with a baby on my boob.

Regarding painful movement with a 2nd, I had it with DS but I can't remember how early it started. He put a lot of pressure on my cervix early on, and then he was faced the wrong direction for late pregnancy and caused a lot of painful issues. I can't speak to the CS scar, but it's a great question to ask! I hope it doesn't get any worse for you!

  • @Gingermom15, when I had my VBAC, I seem to remember them saying that it was super important I tell someone if I felt pain at my C scar at any time during labor.  I have no idea why or whether it's just as big a deal earlier on, but definitely worth a mention to the doc, I would think.

If it happens again I will give my OB a call for sure. It's only in the scar region and not the cervix area and only with the big movements. I wouldn't think abruption would be a risk this early on? It hasn't happened lately
  • @LiveNLove44 DH seriously threatened to cut me off from Prime half way through maternity leave haha! It was bad. I settled with adding a bunch of crap to my cart for awhile, but I fell off the wagon
