  • @Escardoe, my girls are identical and just turned 3 in May.  Even though the doctors say they're identical, I don't think they look much alike, and people who see them often usually don't have a very hard time telling them apart. Feel free to ask any questions, I'd be more than happy to help!

  • @sandbar517 aww how cute, love for twins, do you have stretch marks on the tommy? Because my tommy is so damn itchy.
  • Yep, totally have the stretch marks.  I thought I was going to be lucky, because they didn't show up until very late in the third trimester.  Tummy and back/flank area.  But I feel like they've faded a little since then.

Could they be half identical? Have you heard of that? It's when two sperms fertilize the same egg. No idea how that works but it seems to be a thing!
My nieces are identical twins but they are very easy to tell apart. We think it's because one of them was more squished im utero and has a slightly longer head because of it.
  • @sparkymcgeee we could have hours of conversation about the questions we've been asked and the comments we've heard over and over and over again.
@gildah we've never had actual zygosity testing done, but I would be interested to see the results.  They were born vaginally, so I honestly think they just have different head shapes.  But other people that don't see them all the time have a much harder time telling them apart.  And there are definitely times where if I glance quickly, I have to look a second time to see who I'm actually talking to.  LOL

  • @gildah I don't know if that is a thing? TW* All I know is my last pregnancy I had an MMC because two sperm fertilized one egg and baby ended up with 69 chromosomes. Incompatible with life. End TW*
  • No multiples here so far as I know, but definitely have the bloat. Third time around and my body seems to just want to fall into place. 6 Weeks can be early for a heartbeat.

That's so awful. I'm so sorry about your baby:-(
I don't think half identical twins are very common. Apparently there have been a handful of documented cases.
  • Yes, half-identical are possible, but I've never read about it in much detail to know whether it's compatible with life or not.

@gildah @sandbar517 This blows my mind, I'm still not sure about it though. I'm finding conflicting info about it.
Polar body twinning is sometimes described as half identical twinning. It is distinguished from semi-identical twinning, where two sperm fertilize a single egg because the egg splits before fertilization. Although a case of semi-identical twinning has been confirmed, polar body twinning remains hypothetical.
    ETA:
However, there is no proof that polar body twinning has ever occurred. And there are some theoretical arguments that it doesn’t happen. For example, genetic recombination occurs during the formation of eggs, so the maternal DNA in the egg may not be identical to that in the polar body. Also, with very little cytoplasm, it is unlikely that a fertilized polar body would be able to survive and develop into a normal embryo and fetus. There are no definitive tests to confirm polar body twinning, so it remains a theory only.

  • I find it all very fascinating.  And honestly, how would they even *know* when an egg split, or how it was fertilized, etc?  It's not like they have a camera up there 24/7 or something!! LOL

  • @sparkymcgeee Two sperms fertilizing one egg results in a molar pregnancy (thus the 69 chromosomes). (Duplication of a single sperm's chromosomes can also cause a molar pregnancy.) So, most of the time that protective barrier happens, but not always.      https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/molar-pregnancy/basics/causes/con-20034413

  •  I LOVE when I hear stories of people questioning the parents. "Are you sure?" *eye roll* yes, stranger! Please tell me all you know about MY children.

@suchaglencoco, lol "Yep, pretty sure since one has a penis and the other one doesn't." I don't have multiples but hats off to those of you that do! You guys are super moms!

A friend of of mine has identical twin girls. She said said she avoided going out with them at first because a quick trip to the grocery store turned into a huge deal. She said EVERYONE would stop her and ask dumb questions.

@JNCPro3130, I don't blame your friend. I love taking my kids out for errands, but sometimes it was a lot to handle questions every couple of aisles. The best is when someone stops you to tell you that you have your hands full. No duh. It's made worse when people stop me for no reason to tell me my hands are full.
Now that they're older, we don't get stopped as much, thank goodness. I think their size difference makes a lot of people think they're 2 different ages.
  • I'm 9 weeks along with one berry-sized baby and due to the bloat (and other symptoms) thought until last week that I was carrying twins. But an U/S confirmed one baby and once I got some more fiber (and Colace) into my routine, the "belly bump" went down a bit. Although I did (already!) get some maternity clothing the other day (to give baby "room" and mama freedom to unbutton her pants at will) and somehow feel less "bloated" and "fat" with more stretch.
