Re: Questions - Week of September 17

  • When did you STM's+ feel the second baby?
I feel like such a noob right now. I'm 14 weeks today and swear I feel flutters, it didn't happen for so long with my son but I remember the feeling. I'm convincing myself it's gas, but it's in the same vicinity every time and seems to be when I'm lying in bed or after I drink ice water. Same as my son. 14 weeks just seems way early?

    @Gingermom15

DS: between 13 and 14 weeks (posterior placenta)
DD: between 14 and 15 weeks (anterior placenta)
This baby: 16 weeks (anterior placenta)

Possible TW** I have been pregnant a total of 6 times if that makes a difference.

    Every pregnancy is definitely different!

  • @Gingermom15 like 20 weeks...but I had an anterior placenta. This time I'm feeling them now and I'm 16 weeks
its totally possible that's what you're feeling!
  • Thanks guys. I felt so crazy, like it couldn't be happening already lol
I did have an anterior placenta with my son and didn't feel him until 16 weeks or so, then very lightly.
  • @gingermom15 I felt DS (2nd) between 13 and 14 weeks and it felt so early, but it was unmistakable. This time around, I've felt flutters on and off for a few weeks (almost 16 weeks), which is super fun, but movement won't be consistent for awhile. Enjoy the flutters!

  • @Gingermom15 I felt my second at 15w and this one at 14w and change.
  • This might be tmi but I hope y'all don't mind me asking. During sex, I now feel like my uterus is hitting up against my abdomen. Is that what I'm feeling? Is that ok?
  • @npkat it sounds like maybe your positions will need to be changed to accommodate,ahem.... things. I can't really do missionary anymore because it's super uncomfortable. I thought it was super early to feel that way, but comfort is paramount these days.

  • @cford08 haha I hear ya  :D. It's not really uncomfortable per se, just kind of a strange feeling at this point.
  • @Gingermom15 With my DD, I felt flutters at 16 weeks. This time around, I've been feeling them for about a week now. I'll be 14 weeks on Tuesday. It's not consistent yet but I know what I'm feeling.

@npkat You might just be feeling more aware of your uterus during sex because sex can cause BH contractions during pregnancy. Never fails for me. :frowning:
  • @npkat I can't quite relate to what you're feeling, but I'd imagine that things are shifted a little bit in there compared to what you're used to. Your uterus and the surrounding tissues are all quite soft, so part of me thinks you wouldn't actually feel it pushing against your abdomen.

  • BTDT moms, talk to me about your infant carseats. Does anyone else have one that is going to expire right before or during your new LO's first year? I'm SUPER bummed b/c the carseats we used for our first two will only be good for 6 months, and then they'll expire...UGH!! I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and buy new carseats, right?

  • What @Gingermom15 said @LiveNLove44! My babies weren't in the infant seat longer than about 6 months
  • @gingermom15 and @heatherdubrow good points! Thanks for the insight! I could have sworn my other two were in the infant carrier until closer to a year. We have 4 convertible seats, and I'm hoping DD gets a growth spurt here so we feel good about transitioning her to a booster once this LO#3 needs a convertible. From what I've read, they recommend 4 years old (at the very earliest) and a minimum of 40 pounds for a booster. DD is our peanut and she's 4 but might get to 40lbs by her next birthday. She'll turn 5 in the same month our carrier expires, so maybe she'll be the right size!

  • I know it's early but I'm looking into taking childbirth classes farther down the road.  I just searched on the Lamaze site, and it said there were no classes in the DC area??? How???  Maybe I did something wrong.  So what type of classes did you all do if you have kids already, and I'm possibly thinking of a doula? Any insight is welcome.
  • @vaewelch, we did a prenatal class that was lead by a doula group in our city. It was fantastic. We also had a different/private doula for our birth. I cannot recommend having a doula highly enough!!! I absolutely loved my doula and really don't think I would've gotten through my labour without her!

@LiveNLove44, I agree with the other ladies. We transitioned DS at 9 months to a convertible and definitely could have done it earlier. By 6 months they get so heavy carrying them in the bucket seat. I ended up leaving the seat in the car half the time. Definitely don't waste your money on a new bucket seat and instead invest in a long lasting convertible!
  • all this talk of car seats has me so confused.

i went into babies r u the other day and there are so many options for strollers and car seats.... how do you know which ones work together. i want one where the bucket clicks into both. it seems very overwhelming!
  • edited September 2017
@bb3vj3n, I found it all super overwhelming too. I narrowed down my search by firstly only looking at bucket seats that snap directly into strollers. I think they're usually called "travel systems" then. And you buy them as a package. Then I looked at what bucket seats were actually light enough to carry. I found some were unbelievably heavy WITHOUT a baby in them! This narrowed me down to really liking Graco for their lightweight bucket seats. Then I looked at different strollers, their features, and how I felt pushing them around and closing them and opening them! Don't be afraid to play around in the store. I quickly ruled out strollers that I couldn't even figure out how to close/open. Ain't nobody got time for that!
  • @vaewelch I'm a FTM so I can't give a review, but I discovered that my HMO has free classes every so often at my hospital so you might want to check to see if your insurance has something like that too.
  • Ok so on the thread of car seat questions...  our infant car seat has already expired so I know I need to get a new one but it is part of the snap in the stroller system, is it still safe to use the car seat only in the stroller?  I'm thinking that the reason they expire is for safety standards in the car in the case of an accident so it might be ok just in the stroller?  This was not an issue before because it hadn't expired yet but now that it is expired I'm questioning it.  We need to look into buying a double stroller anyway so this might be a moot point but I really like our original stroller and would like to continue using it with the baby car seat if possible. Any ideas?
  • Many of you ladies know where your placenta is located. Does your doctor volunteer that info to you or do I need to ask at the 16 week u/s I a plan on requesting?

  • @muggle621 when I went for my first trimester U/S the tech told me that my placenta was in the front because she said I might not feel movement as early as I normally would because of it's position and she didn't want me to worry, so in my case it was volunteered otherwise I would have no idea where it was

  • @muggle621 nobody has shared that info with me either - I habe no idea where my placenta is! From what it sounds like in the comments - most people who are aware of the positioning are those who have a current position that is less than ideal at the moment - I also understand that many of these issues correct themselves in time. if you had haven't been told otherwise, I assume it's because everything is likely fine. Your doctor should have copies of your scans though... if you are concerned or just want to know, I don't thin it would hurt you call.

  • @justkeeptrying ugh....i hate things that are more complicated then necessary. I was trying to avoid the sales reps as I know they will push a ton of crap on me, but I think I'll admit defeat and have them offer me some assistance.  I love shopping ... but for done reason I find this particular task daunting .
  • Thanks @LaurenAnn0405 & @bb3vj3n, my first two scans were at 7 & 8 weeks and I think that is too early to tell (maybe it isn't, I'm not sure). I will probably still ask at my 16 week scan just b/c I'm curious and want to know my chances of feeling the baby soon!

  • @muggle621 those weeks are too early to know where pacenta will be, but by 16w they should. I had anterior placentas for both my children and I felt kicks at 18-19w and 15w, and she told me I wouldn't. But I think they were just kicking in other places instead.
  • @muggle621 With DS they didn't tell me, I'm assuming because it was posterior which I found out after looking at my online portal years later, ha! With DD and this pregnancy they told me at my NT scan and warned me it make take longer to feel them because it was anterior.

You could contact the hospital you are delivering at and see if they have any classes?

  • @LaurenAnn0405 I think you're right about the car seat expiration specifically applying to car accidents and it still being safe in the stroller, but what would the point of that be?  You could just put your baby in the stroller without the bucket carrier. If you like the travel system, you should look for a infant bucket that's compatible with your current stroller.
  • @Everycol0r I didn't do any classes. I had a doula, and I would do the same thing again.
  • I have an anterior placenta again (I had to ask at my last U/S at 11-12 weeks and I asked with my first at the anatomy scan). My first I didn't feel movement until 16-17 weeks ish and I'm 13w1d now with no movement (not surprising). My midwife said there's a decent chance I'd have movement by my next appointment (16w) so @Gingermom15 I'd say it's definitely possible.

@LiveNLove44 I agree with the other ladies about using the infant until it expires and switching to a convertible. My son was on the smaller side weight wise as a baby, and we switched around 9 months. But, most of the reasoning was that he was 6 months in December and I wanted to get him properly bundled (ie blankets) for winter weather while inside. Carrying the seat in and out was definitely a pain at that point even though he wasn't a chunky baby. I would have done it earlier if not for the weather considerations.

  • Any thoughts on maternity tights? I have a wedding to go to, and I need to buy some for under my dress. I just want some opinions on what has worked for others.
  • Ladies, I have a stupid question. How do I know when my car seats expire? I've looked at all it says is the date it was manufactured, not the date it expires.... granted these babies are so close in age I'll need another car seat anyway, but how do I know when the one I have expires?
  • @ashleyf911 I've got a while then! Thank you!
  • @ShawnnaO, it depends on the car seat brand I believe. Some are closer to 7 or 10 years. Some less. It should indicate in your manual or you can google your specific car seat.
  • @kalawa I think both the under-belly maternity tights from Old Navy and the full panel tights from Motherhood are very comfortable. Those are tights, though. I have no experience with maternity panty hose/nylons, but those aren't really in fashion now anyway and I would just wear tights or bare legs.
  • I'm a doula and I'm definitely getting a doula, but I'm also planning to take a hypnobabies class to help me with natural birth.
  • So I keep getting a very painful spot along the edge of my tongue. Its way back there and it just hurts! When I try to look at it it just looks like a pimple maybe except the same color as the rest of my tongue.. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? The only reason I ask is because when I turned to Dr. Google (besides cancer) it listed a few things that could cause this and hormones was one of them. It lasts several days and this is the second time within a month that its happened.
