Re: GTKY: Maternity leave
With my first Mat. Leave, I watched a lot of Netflix on my phone. I'd pick a show (West Wing, Friends, Scrubs) and marathon the whole series while she slept or nursed. It was pretty great.
It's kind of a bummer that I'll be on leave in the winter because we won't really want to go out into the cold much, but I'm sure we'll find stuff to do indoors
My husband will probably take a week off after the baby.
I will probably go out around Thanksgiving and go back 3/1.
When baby is asleep and you have time to yourself, what are you excited about doing?
Sleeping! But in reality, with DD....every time I had time to sleep, I ended up playing on my phone instead
When baby is awake and fed/changed, what are you excited about doing?
I haven't figured that out yet. With DD it was summer and I was on maternity with my best friend. Who knows how I am going to kill 3 months in the dead of winter.
Is your significant other taking any time off?
Yes, he gets 16 weeks paid at 100%, so he will take off a few weeks around the time LO is born, and then a few months after I go back to work in March.
We're planning on being screen free with baby until at least 3, so I am trying to wrap up a few favorite tv shows on Netflix and Hulu before his/her arrival. I will make a stack of books & knitting & hand-sewing projects so I have something ready to go when I need entertainment.
It's hard to predict exactly how my husband's leave will work out. He is an executive at a tech consulting firm and right now his work site is 1.5 hours away. He will be rolled off that project in October, making his commute the more normal 0.5 hours. His company gives 1 week paid paternity leave + he has over 2 weeks PTO saved and will get 5 more weeks PTO once the new year starts--we won't want to burn it all, but it gives us some flexibility. Lately, he sounds most inclined to work part-time for a month or two, rather than straight up take the days off. I think we're all waiting to see how wild the ride is! As an infant, I was quite content and slept through the night starting at 3 weeks, so I hope I am "cursed" with a baby who repeats this pattern! I'm really looking forward to meeting and spending time with the baby.
When baby is asleep and you have time to yourself, what are you excited about doing? probably sleeping, laundry, working on designing my online course for the summer if my brain works. Maybe reading
When baby is awake and fed/changed, what are you excited about doing? talking/cooing at baby, going for walks if it is not too cold (in Mississippi, we could have 70-degree temps or 20-degree temps)
Is your significant other taking any time off? He will probably take some time for Christmas. Christmas is on a Monday this year, so maybe he will take the Friday before or the Tuesday after. We haven't really figured it out yet. Last time, he "worked" from the hospital room while we were in there and then we had the weekend, but he went back to work the Monday after DD was born. His company has no paternity leave policy.
Married May 2014
DD born August 2016
Baby #2 due December 2017
I get 4 weeks before EDD, and 14 weeks after. I most likely will work from home the 4 weeks beforehand if I don't start feeling better and I also will work from home the last 6 of the 14 so that my company will pay me instead of the state.
When baby is asleep and you have time to yourself, what are you excited about doing?
Napping! Lol but realistically that most likely won't happen. Just getting the house in order and I'm hoping I can read a book or two. DS1 will still be in pre-k/daycare M-Th.
When baby is awake and fed/changed, what are you excited about doing?
Snuggling!
Is SO taking any time off?
no. He does get paternity leave but the caveat is that they can't guarantee he will be put back in same shift or at same firehouse and it's not a risk we are willing to take. He will attempt to get approval for a few leave days when I come home from hospital so that I can have some recovery time from c-section.

I'm due right at Christmas but still don't know if they are going to do scheduled CS (because of some additional gyno surgery I need anyway) or let me go into labor whenever, so I'm crazy paranoid about going into labor prematurely. I started a new job only a few months before I got pregnant so I've been trying hard to build up leave/vacation to get me over the hump so I can qualify for FMLA. I was paying into a short-term disability policy at my old job and never figured out how to roll it over to this job so I'm not really sure I'll be getting paid, but as long as I can be guaranteed the 12 weeks of FMLA, that's what I will take.
When baby is asleep and you have time to yourself, what are you excited about doing?
Ummm bathing, eating, cleaning, sleeping, generally trying to be a functioning human. I don't subscribe to this whole "I have a baby so I get to be a hot mess now" philosophy, mostly because I have some depression/anxiety issues that make me prone to hot messedness anyway, so I know from experience I'll feel and function so much better if I try to put forth even 10% effort. We are super lucky to have lots of family nearby so I am hoping that will help!
When baby is awake and fed/changed, what are you excited about doing?
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that LO will enjoy babywearing so we can get out and about on warmer days (winter in the southeast is such a crap shoot); I also just can't wait to just stare at her all the time?? Hahaha
Is your significant other taking any time off?
I think he's allowed some paternity leave (2 weeks maybe?) but has to use his PTO for it if he has it. We decided that if something happens and baby is in NICU, he'd keep working until baby came home and then start his leave. We feel a little guilty since it's Christmas/New Years and he will undoubtedly have colleagues that get the short straw because of it (he's in healthcare so someone always has to work holidays).
I'm taking 13 weeks. I get 2 weeks paid from work, the next 10 will be PTO that I have stockpiled and the last week or so will be unpaid.
When baby is asleep and you have time to yourself, what are you excited about doing?
When baby is asleep and DD1 is at her in home daycare, I will be napping/relaxing. When DD1 is home, I'm sure I'll be playing with stuffed animals, puzzles and blocks and watching some Elmo/Daniel Tiger/Disney Sing Along Songs.
When baby is awake and fed/changed, what are you excited about doing?
I have an awesome place that I found after I had DD1 that has a new moms group, along with an open play time, nursing moms group and a group for moms with infants and toddlers so I will be taking advantage of going there as much as we can! If you have something like this place around your area I encourage you to check it out! It was honestly a lifesaver for me with DD1 who was a January baby. (If you happen to live in the Southern NH or Northern MA area, go to Nini Bambini in Bedford, NH!!)
Is your significant other taking any time off?
DH just got a promotion to GM of his restaurant (yay!) but it starts October 1, so he is limited with the time he can take off. He will probably take 7-10 days off right after birth. Then my mom will be coming to stay for a week or two (she is amazing and wants nothing more than to cook, clean, and watch my kids so I can nap). But then he gets more vacation time after January 1 so he will probably take another week sometime in January.
What is your timeline for maternity leave? I plan on taking the full 12 weeks. I'm really hoping I can make it to 12/17, so I can have 4 paid holidays (Xmas Eve, Xmas, NYE and NYD) and return on 3/12/18
When baby is asleep and you have time to yourself, what are you excited about doing? Sleeping or showering. Last time I also watched a lot of Netflix, I'm sure that will be happening this time too.
When baby is awake and fed/changed, what are you excited about doing? Watching the interaction between baby and DD.
Is your significant other taking any time off? Maybe a couple weeks, and if I can make it to 12/17 it will work out perfect with the holidays. Last time he took 8 or 10 weeks, and I swear I wanted to murder him by day 4.
I am due the 15th but I think he'll take her the 8th. I have to see at my appointment next week. I'll take off the 7th so spend time with DD and make sure all last min things are done.
I am sooooo jealous of you mamas who get paid time. We get nothing. I have 6 weeks built up but that's all. Trying not to go back til August but might have to go back in march (depending on money).
When baby is asleep and you have time to yourself, what are you excited about doing?
DD only slept in 30 min increments so I would pee, start a load of laundry, wash bottles, scarf down food, and then she'd be awake. Hoping this one sleeps longer so DD1 and I can spend some time together.
When baby is awake and fed/changed, what are you excited about doing?
Going for walks on milder days with DD1 and baby and just enjoying each other. It's gonna be high stress I'm afraid.
Is your significant other taking any time off?
he also doesn't get any time. With DD he took off for the 4 days I was in the hospital and then went back to work. My mom will come and stay a week and his parents live 7 miles down the road. Hoping for lots of "productive" help.
When baby is asleep and you have time to yourself, what are you excited about doing? Playing with my other two kids. I am hoping to get some time to myself, but realistically that will probably be unlikely given the juggling of three kids. Hoping to fit showers into the schedule somehow...
When baby is awake and fed/changed, what are you excited about doing? Considering it will be winter and freezing cold I'm not too sure! I'm excited to see how my older DD's interact with the baby. On milder days we'll probably head to the zoo or library...
Is your significant other taking any time off? He gets 3 days. Boo America. He's saved paid time off and plans to take a week if his boss approves.
When baby is asleep and you have time to yourself, what are you excited about doing? I'd like to get a lot of cooking done and try new recipes! Go into mom mode
When baby is awake and fed/changed, what are you excited about doing? Walking outside on nice days and when the time comes, jogging.
Is your significant other taking any time off? DH owns a small business so his time is flexible, but his busiest season is of course Nov-Jan haha. We agreed that he would take off a few days for when I'm in the hospital but then he'll be back at work shortly after. But actually it's nice because he slows down significantly in Feb which is when I'll be back at work, so he'll have a month with her to himself before she starts daycare in March.

Working right up until delivery hopefully, and then I get 12 weeks. I added the STD plan when I got this job so that will provide some additional income while I'm out. Then back at work the beginning of March I guess? I kind of want H to stay at home for the first month I'm back at work, or work from home with a reduced workload. Honestly I keep thinking about not really going back and staying home. Lots to think about there.
When baby is asleep and you have time to yourself, what are you excited about doing?
Sleeping I'm guessing or catching up with you fine ladies! Maybe some baking. Staring at sleeping baby
When baby is awake and fed/changed, what are you excited about doing?
For some reason I'm excited about seeing how baby does with tummy time. There's something about their personality coming out when they're so tiny but obviously frustrated/angry that I find so cute and endearing. Also walks, reading to baby, mommy and baby yoga?
Is your significant other taking any time off?
Still discussing if he can take any significant time off (like a month at some point), but he'll take at least one week, probably two.

My Chart
Saving the last of my vacation time for the 2 weeks before his due date (if he comes late, I have another 2 weeks of personal/sick time I can use to supplement), then taking 14 weeks once baby is born. Our company just extended their policy a couple months ago, I'm super psyched about it.
When baby is asleep and you have time to yourself, what are you excited about doing?
Probably napping, catching up on TV, cleaning the house, & having 1:1 time with my male cat (total mama's boy) who will inevitably be displeased with this new intruder.
When baby is awake and fed/changed, what are you excited about doing?
I'm guessing a lot of staring at him in awe, haha. The winter thing is kind of a bummer, I'd like to take him on frequent walks around the neighborhood, but sidewalks are usually an icy/slushy mess on and off from late December to mid April. We'll have to make the best of sunny days and local parks that have thorough snow removal.
Is your significant other taking any time off?
Yes, our new policy covers paternity leave, as well, so he can take 8 weeks and will overlap with the end of mine (such a lifesaver not having to worry about daycare for several months). But during the majority of his leave he'll still be somewhat connected to work and will go into the office occasionally for big meetings & such, which his boss really appreciates and promised him more flexibility once he goes back full time.
@elcd458 I totally get where you're coming from with the "hot mess" thing... I've lived with depression and anxiety for more than half my life and I know I'll be on high alert for PPD, so getting myself showered and dressed will be an important goal for most days. No judgment whatsoever to those moms who embrace that lifestyle, but I just don't see the "appeal" in sweatpants and messy buns for months on end, from me that would be a major cry for help.
TTC #1 since 12/2015
BFP 4/4/17, EDD 12/4/17
i'll be scheduled for my c-section sometime the week after thanksgiving, not later than december 1. i don't get to schedule til 30 days out so it's a long wait to figure it out. i won't take more than 1 day off before the c-section and then 12 weeks after, 8 of which are STD (only up to 60 percent pay) then 4 weeks at about 75 percent pay with my saved PTO (use 30 hours per week to meet full time minimums for benefits). so that puts me out til not quite the end of February.
my H does not have any formal leave policy. he has been saving up his time for quite a while. he will take off a week after birth (most of which i will still be in the hospital, at least half) and then he gets a week at christmas, and will take a week or two when i go back to work to put off day care for a few extra weeks. luckily he has a short commute and flexible work hours so that helps.
i'm a die-hard must shower / be clean person. even on 2 hours of sleep, i will take a hot shower. i will put a crying baby in a bouncer in the bathroom and take the damn shower. ideally i'll just shower while he is napping. my first was a cat-napper - never ever more than 40 min at a time. it's barely enough time to figure out what you want to tackle before he wakes back up. i also hope to exercise, even in small increments, and force myself to bundle up to go for walks during his waking hours as well.
will i put on real clothes? nah. no need to stress myself out trying to FIT into real clothes before i have to. i'm one of those modern stereotypes that would live in workout gear 24/7 if it were up to me. it being winter, it'll be workout gear with something cozy on top layer, lol.
i'm not a big tv watcher and we had a firm rule about the tv being off when the baby is around. i had classical music on most of the day. i like to read. there is always cleaning to do or ignore. it'll be the holidays for a bit so i'll be trying to keep a handle on that. i'll have my toddler around when he's not at daycare. somehow i don't think i'll be bored!

When baby is asleep and you have time to yourself, what are you excited about doing?
Cleaning, napping, having time to myself
When baby is awake and fed/changed, what are you excited about doing?

Is your significant other taking any time off?
Yes, she will take the first 4 weeks off with me and then I will do the next 8 weeks solo, then when I go back she will take her remaining 12 weeks solo. She gets 16 weeks at 100% and it can be taken anytime in the first 12 months, so we are saving a little bit on daycare, plus we both get quality time with LO.

I plan on working right up until I give birth, barring any complications. My EDD is 12/30, so I'm thinking I'll for sure start working exclusively from home when Christmas hits, possibly earlier. I have daycare slated for March, so I can start taking her any day in March. I'm planning on taking 10 weeks, because we'll do daycare M-W and my mom will watch her T&F, and she has a vacation in April, so I'll use parts of those last two weeks when she's gone, and the rest whenever. I currently have almost 4 weeks of vacation/PTO saved, and my PTO keeps accruing. I also get $2,000 flat rate STD (I had to sign up for it and pay into it and by the time I use it I'll have paid equal or more into it than the $2,000, womp). I'll also work from home a little bit at certain points to make sure I'm not quite as overwhelmed when I return/to make money when I'm not getting paid.
When baby is asleep and you have time to yourself, what are you excited about doing?
After the first 5 or 6 weeks, I'll have to work some (not excited). I hope to nap/shower/feed my face/read/Netflix during free time otherwise, but I'll stick to shower and feed my face if the naps are short.
When baby is awake and fed/changed, what are you excited about doing?
Go for walks, weather permitting, hold her and stare at her (also works when she's sleeping, lol)...
Is your significant other taking any time off?
He's saving all his PTO and is currently planning to take four weeks.

When baby is asleep and you have time to yourself, what are you excited about doing?
I am excited about napping. But I'll have an almost two year old, too so I am not sure how much shit-eye I'll be getting. I already have a list of maternity leave shows to watch going so I'm pumped to make a dent in that when DS is at daycare.
When baby is awake and fed/changed, what are you excited about doing?
Snuggles! It'll probably be a little too cold for walks until the very end of my leave, but I'd like to have a little outside time, too. And yes, the staring in awe is real, folks.
Is your significant other taking any time off?
Nothing significant
Me: 29 DH: 31
Married 10/13/12
TTC Since 8/2016
When baby is asleep and you have time to yourself, what are you excited about doing? Napping. Eating something without counting carbs or finding a protein to pair with it. Staring at holiday lights. Staring at baby.
When baby is awake and fed/changed, what are you excited about doing? Snuggling. Reading to baby. Using snuggling with baby as an excuse to avoid holiday gatherings I just don't want to go to.
Is your significant other taking any time off? Yes! He's burning PTO to be home with us in Dec. Then he'll go back to work in January and I'll be on my own for about 8 weeks. He's taking his 12 weeks CFRA leave (half paid, second half unpaid) when I go back to work. We'll be down his paycheck or part of his paycheck for the 12 weeks, but that's NBD since we used to make ends meet on just mine before I got promoted. We've also been saving for this for yeaaaaars so we've got money to stretch across that gap even with the house remodel, etc, we've done this years.
When baby is asleep and you have time to yourself, what are you excited about doing? Sleeping, but I'll probably end up playing with my phone!
When baby is awake and fed/changed, what are you excited about doing? Hoping to take some short excursions outside to get breakfast or lunch in the neighborhood. Luckily I live near so many good restaurants, some of them right across the street.
Is your significant other taking any time off? He is taking 3-4 weeks depending on the timing of when baby's born. He can take 2 weeks for paternity leave and then take extra time from Christmas to New Years.
Edited to add that I'll be taking baby on these restaurant excursions. Just in case that wasn't clear ha.
When baby is asleep and you have time to yourself, what are you excited about doing? What time to myself? I have two other ones running around... I will send them to daycare a couple days a week, so honestly I'll probably be sleeping and folding laundry and if everyone is lucky making a meal.
When baby is awake and fed/changed, what are you excited about doing? It's such a blur from the first time. All I can say is don't have a plan, it rarely ever goes the way you want it too! I'm hoping babywearing will win out with this one so I can get some other stuff done too.
Is your significant other taking any time off? He owns a business and we live where the business is. So he will be around, but not taking any significant time off.
When baby is asleep and you have time to yourself, what are you excited about doing? Staring at her?! Also taking 9 million pictures. I want to learn how to use my DSLR camera I got for my birthday this year! I'll have to make showering and changing clothes a priority. I know how I am/feel when I don't do that.
When baby is awake and fed/changed, what are you excited about doing? Staring at her more?! I also want to find mom groups to join.
Is your significant other taking any time off? He technically doesn't get any time off and hasn't been there long enough to get PTO, but his work is sounding like they are going to let him take 1-2 weeks off!

When baby is asleep and you have time to yourself, what are you excited about doing? Sleeping and snuggling (my two favorite things)! Also, showering and having a chance to get ready/put on some makeup (vital for my well being).
When baby is awake and fed/changed, what are you excited about doing? Snuggling some more and going on walks. I live in TX, so the weather should be pretty mild.
Is your significant other taking any time off? Yes, thankfully he gets four weeks of paid paternal leave. I'm so excited for us to all be home and get a chance to bond over the holidays.
My babies come super late (41+2 and 41+4), so I work up until I go into labor, otherwise I would go crazy from boredom. Then I'm taking 12 weeks.
When baby is asleep and you have time to yourself, what are you excited about doing?
Ha! This time is a myth. I will pee, shove food in my face and speed shower in the tiny window between wakings.
When baby is awake and fed/changed, what are you excited about doing?
Long walks with the stroller. Snuggles. Making my way through my Netflix/Amazon Prime watchlists during clusterfeeding when I am trapped on the couch with a baby who eats 20 out of 24 hours in a day.
Is your significant other taking any time off?
Yes. He gets 3 weeks of paternity leave, as well as the week between Christmas and New Year's. He also just has a ton of leave in general, so I think he will stay home with the baby for a few weeks after I go back. He did that with our first and I think it was helpful. Plus, with 2 other kids, he will want some solo time with this one.
Taking off 11/21 (due 12/11) through May 7. This is mostly unpaid, but I wanted to take off the maximum I could with my job still legally protected. Then I'll just work 3 days a week until June 15 and I'll be off for the summer (I work in a school). It's a combo of FMLA, STD, paid time off required by our city (6 weeks paid!).
When baby is asleep and you have time to yourself, what are you excited about doing?
Sewing, sleeping or vegging out watching TV.
When baby is awake and fed/changed, what are you excited about doing?
Going for walks (I'm in California, so it'll be mild and hopefully not too rainy!). Taking pics of baby being cute during tummy time. Generally staring at baby.
Is your significant other taking any time off?
Yes! He gets time off from the city we work in (6 weeks paid!) and will likely take it in chunks. Last time he took 4 weeks off and then took the remaining time as a day or two per week for several weeks. My favorite part of this time as a family with DD was my husband making me a soft boiled egg and a cup of coffee every morning (we do pour over and he makes it really well!) while DD was still sleeping.
Ladies, I am so happy that my job appreciates me! I work from home for a small company. Their policy is 6 weeks paid maternity leave. I'm having twins and noted how usually in my state, people use STD and FMLA to take 12 weeks and I'm worried that I'll be a zombie at 6 weeks with twins. Well, yesterday, my manager said that they are giving me 8 weeks paid since I'm having twins and I can take up to 12 weeks! I know taking 12 weeks will really put them in a bind and they're very family friendly so if after 8 weeks I feel I could work part time, I will do that for a few weeks. I feel so lucky and blessed. Of course, I still think US maternity leave sucks, but this takes so much worry off of my shoulders.
When baby is asleep and you have time to yourself, what are you excited about doing?
Sleeping probably.
When baby is awake and fed/changed, what are you excited about doing?
I can't wait to hear the giggling and cooing and just stare and snuggle.
Is your significant other taking any time off?
He will use 1 week vacation and 1 week unpaid maternity leave.

And eat folks. I lost 45lbs in the first 4 weeks because I literally didn't have time to eat or was too tired. Especially if you breastfeed. Try hard I make time for yourself.
As for leading up to her birth, I'm hoping to work up until the baby is born. I'm hoping to start working from home exclusively after Thanksgiving (due date is December 15), which should help. Given my commute could take anywhere from 20 minutes (no traffic and not rush hour) to 90 minutes (rush hour), I'd rather not risk going into labor at the office and it being during rush hour and it taking forever to get to the hospital. And god forbid it snows or sleets or there is an accident on the highway. The traffic could take 2+ hours.
When baby is asleep and you have time to yourself, what are you excited about doing? I feel like based on what I hear from others, the answer should be showering. Or napping myself.
When baby is awake and fed/changed, what are you excited about doing? I'd really looking forward to taking the baby for walks.
Is your significant other taking any time off? Yes. He'll take about 3 weeks off when she's born. He might also take some time after my maternity leave to delay placing her in daycare for a bit of time.
@peachy13 - cooking sounds like a great use of baby sleeping time!

When baby is asleep and you have time to yourself, what are you excited about doing? Ha. I'll be entertaining my other two. When they are at day-care it will probably be showering and *trying* to relax for half a millisecond.
When baby is awake and fed/changed, what are you excited about doing? I'm excited to see my kids interact with the new baby.
Is your significant other taking any time off? He'll probably take a week off as he did with the other babies. He company allows for either 3 or 6 weeks for paternity leave but he said NO ONE ever takes it (he's in commercial construction, so it's mostly men in his office), almost like it has some sort of stigma attached.
