Getting used to pregnancy rules

edited September 2017 in May 2018 Moms
I was at my in laws' today and found myself halfway through a burger before realizing it was pretty darn pink (eek!). So, of course I'm freaking out and worried I've done something awful to harm my little pal, but I'm also just thinking about how many rules there are to pregnancy.

I hope I get better at learning/remembering them (assuming everything does turn out to be okay.) Has anyone else had any slip-ups with this pregnancy or others?

Re: Getting used to pregnancy rules

  • I did exactly the same thing today, had a really nice steak for dinner then an hour later started freaking out that it was medium rare. I'm just being paranoid, there are so many things to remember everyone's bound to break some rules!
  • Loading the player...
  • I found I'm much more lax this second time around. Although first pregnancy I did not give up my med-rare streaks!  Or medium burger. I just made sure I only ate them at reputable restaurants or at home and that made me feel better about it lol

  • You'll drive yourself crazy with all the rules.  Talk to your OB about what they think you should avoid, and try not to overthink everything.

  • No matter how careful you are, something could go wrong anyway.  A lot of women believe that the chances are so small that it's not worth it to spend energy policing their diet for nine months.  The only reason doctors insist on the rules is that, to them, the inconvenience is small compared to the statistical reality.  So don't blame yourself if you 'fail,' and don't be stringent if you don't feel like you want to be.  Your mental health is just as important!

@okaykoala it's so hard not to freak out about the rules! This is my third, and I've always been super lax about deli meat. I've also had to take several class C meds for hyperemesis gravidarum in my past pregnancies. Even though I've been through it before, sometimes I still get that twinge of anxiety and it can be overwhelming! A good talk with your OB can really help. With many of the "rules", when the benefits outweigh the risks or you just use common sense (my doc just said don't eat the deli meat from sketchy looking restaurants), most of the time things turn out just fine. But always speak to your OB first, of course. <3

@tincupchalice That's pretty much me too. But on rare occasion, I'll even have a small glass of wine after second trimester.
  • I'm only eliminating alcohol and chemicals like medication, certain face washes, artificial sweeteners, etc.
  • @firefliesandfjords have you had HG every time? I had it with my son, and I am trying to remain hopeful I won't get it this time around. Puke free so far, but I am only 4 weeks.

  • This may sound dumb,  but I've been craving Panera tuna. I've googled, but does anyone know if it's albacore or chunk light? Either way, it's freaking delicious and I want it.
  • @BritJonathan I had it with my first two. It was bad with my first. Started at 5 weeks and I narrowly missed having a PICC put in. Meds were barely effective. With my son, I started B6 and Unisom the second I felt sick at 4 weeks and got on Zofran, Phenergan, and Vistaril at 6 weeks when the OTC stuff stopped working. That kept it mostly under control, so long as I didn't miss a dose. Some moms who had HG in previous pregnancies have found that starting meds at the first sign of sickness made all the difference. I'm already on the B6/Unisom now, and will take the other meds if I need to. Hoping that will keep it away like it did with my second pregnancy. You're more likely to get it if you've had it before, but there is definitely hope for a fluffy pregnancy! If you need anything let me know, and if you haven't joined it already, I highly recommend the FB group "Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG)".

I had horrible morning sickness with my first. It wasn't HG level bad, but I was throwing up 10+ times a day. I didn't have horrible MS with my next three pregnancies though. I started taking unisom/b6 at the first hint of sickness. I also, eat low carb high fat/high protein foods. I know it sounds completely crazy, but at least for me, I think carbs and sugary foods make my MS much worse because of blood sugar swings. There's a reproductive endocrinologist named Dr Fox who recommends this diet to avoid HG. It has totally worked for me, along with the unisom B6 and ginger pills/ tea. I still throw up everyday until 28 weeks when I'm pregnant but it's nothing compared to my first.
  • I'm a rebel. I don't follow rules. Except the alcohol and smoking part because I'm also not stupid. I eat deli meat, sushi, medium rare steaks. My first pregnancy they found listeria in blue bell and prepackaged salad so meh.

That dreaded day when Blue Bell was pulled from stores was the day a piece of me died... until they cleaned shop and came back in full force. My soul is alive again.
  • I don't think it's fair to have to be pregnant without blue bell. I cried a lot from cravings I couldn't quench.
  • I've been a little more relaxed this time around with deli meat and Diet Coke or iced tea. No coffee for me now, but mostly because it makes my nausea worse. I'll avoid deli salads and sushi, follow the medicine guidelines, and all that. Once second tri hits, I may indulge in a glass of wine here or there. My uncle is a perinatologist and he said that it's perfectly fine to have an occasional glass of wine.

It wasn't hard for me to stick to the rules in my first tri last time because I was so sick. Now that my morning sickness is ramping up again, it's the sameness.  A lot of things just sound bad to me.
  • @cups4 I didn't even think to check what kind of tuna they use  :| I ate it all through my first pregnancy and have eaten it this time too, so good!
  • I am definitely not as strict as I was the first time around. I did quit caffeine, but honestly it's only because it makes my nausea worse haha. Other than that the only thing I've stopped is alcohol.
  • The thing I'm having an impossible time with is cat litter boxes....yuck. My cat is ancient and makes all sorts of messes I have to clean up, and my husband works 24+ hour shifts so they can't wait that long! Sorry, this post made me gas just typing it.

    @firefliesandfjords
I threw up until 28 weeks, too. I wonder what changed that week. My son was born at 34 weeks though, so I only got a few weeks vomit free. That is good to hear it wasn't as bad with all of your pregnancies. I used Zofran, but my new OB wants me to use the other stuff (dic-something). She said if I was still sick, she would let me use Zofran, esp after 9 weeks.

I have noticed too that that protein helps, like hard boiled eggs were usually a safe choice. I am already a member of the HG Facebook group. I joined it before I even got my IUD out--I think it will be a good resource.

  • I am not drinking. I miss that glass of wine to wind day at the end of the day though! I'll probably still eat sushi and med rare meat if I feel like it. I didn't with my son, but I am way calmer about that stuff this time around. I won't give up caffeine.

I did get a dental x-ray during the TWW. It was our first cycle NTNP, so I just didn't think it would happen so fast! I told my OB and she said not to worry about it.

  • Only major changes I make is to cut out alcohol and reduce my caffeine intake. I do try to heat my deli meat too. I came down with severe bronchitis right when I got my bfp so I have been on antibiotics, oral steroids and now a steroid inhaler this pregnancy (all with OB approval and only because they were absolutely necessary).

Lurking from Feb, DH travels a lot and my MW told me to just make sure to wear a mask and gloves while cleaning, I got some inexpensive ones from CVS.

I can't deal with the rules. I'll be damned if I give of med-rare steaks and salmon sashimi. Although I will drop the salmon sashimi consumption to maybe twice a month. Which is huge considering I used to eat raw salmon three times a week. I scarfed a big salmon poke bowl right before taking my BFP test. If it's from a reputable place, the sashimi should be flash frozen and kept frozen long enough to kill any parasites.
  • @cups4 I ate some last weekend. It was delicious. You can have a couple servings a week of salt water fish. Just do it!
  • @yesthisiskim0401 There is no way I am giving up fro-yo.  It sure seems like a lot of things can have listeria!
