US Dialect GTKY

Stolen from @BusinessWife on the TTGP board

Does this quiz guess where you were raised/currently live?  It accurately guessed that my dialect is from Michigan!

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2013/12/20/sunday-review/dialect-quiz-map.html?mcubz=3

Do you call it pop, soda, or are you a psycho who calls everything coke?

It definitely got me for where I was raised/live.

It's soda, rotary, and sneakers :-) (decided to throw in some of the other ones too)

  • It was right for me, New York! It's soda BTW

  • I got New England, which is accurate since I grew up in Maine/Connecticut and went to college in Boston.
  • According to the quiz I talk like I'm from either Alaska or Nebraska. I've never been to either, but I have done quite a bit of traveling due to my father being in the Air Force. I did learn that I have multiple words/pronunciations for a lot of things, though.

In example: I'll say soda, pop, and soda pop all interchangeably.

Fun quiz! It had St. Louis (where I'm from/live) in red as a high possibility but ultimately guessed that I am from Michigan. I've had several people ask me if I'm from Michigan/Wisconsin in my life because of my "accent."

ETA: I saw some of you posting that it asked about soda/pop but I didn't get that question. I wonder if I took it again with different questions if it would guess right!

  • It gave me Madison/Rockford/Milwaukee.  Pretty close, I'm in Iowa.

I say soda. My husband and his family are all from Mississippi and they're the weirdos who call it all coke.  :/

  • You guise.  It's pop.

  • @day38 what do you call a rotary?  All I can think of is a phone?  I must not have gotten that question.
  • I enjoyed this quiz, and it's pretty accurate. It put me in Newark/Paterson, NJ, which is not far from where I grew up. I think our word for the night before Halloween is a dead giveaway. "Mischief Night" isn't really used anywhere else but here. My husband is from NY and had never heard that phrase.

    Also, SODA!
  • Mine was very accurate.. I grew up in a suburb of Memphis, TN and my results were Tennessee, Georgia, & Alabama.

I love this quiz. It shouldn't be accurate for me because of how much I've moved, but it is. I've lived in PA, OR, CA, and AZ and it pegged me as PA and AZ--one is where I grew up and one is where I went to college + lived a few extra years. It lit up almost dark for CA, where I've been the last 6 years, and apparently OR didn't rub off on me at all, which makes sense because I only lived there for ~ 2 years. I was surprised how accurate it is--I think moreso this time than when I took it like 4 years ago.
  • This is hilarious!! It got me spot on, and I was raised in North Louisiana but I live in South Louisiana so I figured it would get me confused but it didn't!!

I say soft drink as do most people I know. I was wondering what was up with cake frosting/icing question though. Is there a difference or do people just call it different things?

I call them different things - frosting is the thick stuff you put on a cake or cupcake, and icing is the really thin sugary glaze you drizzle on donuts or cinnamon rolls.  :)

  • This was very accurate because "bubbler" is like a giant neon sign pointing to where I was raised.

The other place I got was Salt Lake City for potato bug.

And what area is a firefly a "peenie wallie"? I've never heard this phrase before.

  • This was accurate for me - South Georgia. And y'all...it's Coke. Even if it's actually Sprite, or root beer, or ginger ale. C'mon now.
  • I took this because I was curious. I'm Canadian in actuality, but it said I should be from Seattle.
  • Mine was pretty accurate. It said I'm most like WI, which is where I spent 11 years of my life, but I'm also pretty similar to certain areas in TX and FL, which between the two I've spent 10 years. I'm impressed! It even marked the exact area in Florida that I'm from  :D
  • Mine was spot-on.  West-coaster, here!
    Lilypie Pregnancy tickers
  • It tagged me in Texas and Pennsylvania.  I have lived in Texas for 21 years and my parents are from Pennsylvania.  Pretty spot on.

@antoto other common words are a roundabout, and traffic circle. Basically when a bunch of roads merge into a circular pattern instead of a regular intersection. Not sure what else to call it :-)

Ohhhhhh I've never heard a roundabout called a rotary!  Weird!
  • It was wrong for me... but I guess some of that is due to moving quite a bit and because where I'm from is actually a very small area with a different dialect.

    And it's soda
  • Spot on for me for NY. I call it soda.
  • Pegged me in MN where most people I know call it pop. Fun quiz thank you for sharing!
  • So close! The quiz pegged me as from either Indiana or Missouri, but the next darkest spot (and the correct location) is that weird ring for Chicago and the surrounding 'burbs that tends not to match the rest of the state.

Also I say soda, but my sister says pop. Not sure how that happened.

  • It put me in Buffalo, which is really close and definitely correct as far as vocabulary is concerned, but we do vowels very differently from Buffalo and I'm not sure how it missed that.
