D&C advice

last week my baby was measuring small with a low hr and today at 9 weeks all that was left was the amniotic sac:( I knew that was the news I was going to receive, so I've come to terms with it.  I opted for the D&C tomorrow. I just couldn't handle waiting any longer to miscarry. Anyone have advice on what to expect after the procedure? How long did it take to get your period again?

Re: D&C advice

  • I don't have any experience but I just want to say how very sorry I am for your loss. I will say prayers for a smooth procedure tomorrow.

  • @mrsround2  I am so sorry to hear this.  I did have a D&C but I don't know if it will help your situation any.  My D&C was due to polyps.  I actually had the procedure July 7 and ovulated that same cycle which ended with me being pregnant.  The only thing I'm unsure about is your progesterone levels.  I don't think the D&C will interfere with your cycle much, it will be the progesterone levels. FX everything turns out ok.  Prayers and thoughts are with you.

  • I'm very sorry for your loss.  I had one a very long time ago with my first loss around 9 weeks, and it did delay my next cycle a bit, but not more than a few weeks.  It actually was easier to recover from than I expected.

You may find more helpful stories and information on the Trying To Conceive After A Loss board.  The ladies over there are extremely supportive and kind.  They also share information really well.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. I think you are making the right choice. I had a D&C after hoping it would happen on it's own with a bunch of cytotec. It didn't so almost two weeks later I was back for the procedure and without twilight anesthesia. Would NOT recommend going that route.

Have someone go with you. I was super emotional afterwards but very quickly, I felt like I was on the road to conceiving again. My cycle returned 5 weeks later and I conceived not the next cycle but the one after that. I am praying for you. Please seek out support from the other wonderful TTCAL and PGAL women. They are amazing.
  •  I am sorry for your loss. I had a D&C approximately two weeks after my loss. I had tried the medicine for two weeks before which led to a lot of pain and no expulsion of the pregnancy tissue. After the D&C I was up and about the next day. I felt great. Two months later I got a period snd we conceived the following month. I wish you all the best in this next adventure.
During the preparation for the procedure I was very nervous, anxious, and upset. However it was a great decision.
  • Thank you everyone for the words of encouragement! I've heard so many horror stories of waiting it out, so I'm feeling good about my decision. I guess it's time to join the misscariage and loss group...
  • No experience here but wanted to extend condolences. I'm so sorry for your loss.

  • So so sorry. I opted not to have a D&C and in hindsight I wish I had. I second the recommendation to chat with the ladies at TTCAL board. They were amazing to me.
  • I had one and glad I did. I don't remember how long it took but I want to say it was a month to get my period again. I bled for about a week and Advil helped with the cramps.
  • First of all, I am so so sorry for your loss.

I've  been there, and the sadness is overwhelming. Definitely join the loss boards and the TTCAL boards. They were a HUGE help to me after my losses.

To repeat some of the other helpful ladies, definitely have someone who can be there for you right after. You will have a lot of emotions right after, and it's good to have support. I woke up from the anesthesia upset and crying. So you will like/want/need hugs!!

I got my period 4-5 weeks after the procedure, but my OB recommended that I give my body a rest for one cycle and try again the next month. I had it done in October, got my period in November, and got pregnant with my son in December.

    ((Big hugs))
  • @mrsround2 I had a D&C in May and luckily I had a quick recovery. Light bleeding for about 1 week and then I got my period 5 weeks exactly from the date of the procedure. The D&C was only scary because the situation sucks so bad and I don't love bring hooked up to an IV but I really felt nothing in terms of pain....I just woke up when it was over and that was it. I'm happy to answer any questions you have at all. It's such an unfair and shitty time in your life - I'm really thinking of you and praying that the next time around goes perfectly!!!
