UO Thursday 8/31

Re: UO Thursday 8/31

  • Haha! I love wine, margaritas and social drinking, and I think the mom wine culture is hilarious! As a FTM I don't really have a personal perspective, but from the outside looking in it looks fun! I have no problem not drinking and having fun, or drinking and having fun. I didn't drink/party until I was over 22 because I was a very serious competitive athlete at the time. I figured I had the whole rest of my life to drink if I wanted. I like that everyone has different perspectives on drinking, and would expect it since everyone has different life experiences. Sometimes I tell people i'm getting "ice cream drunk" just bc it sounds funny!
  • It's interesting reading everyone's perspectives and makes a lot more sense now.  Until just recently, I lived downtown in a city and most friends were childless.  So very often social gatherings revolved around "let's go get a drink somewhere!". It's just very much the culture surrounding me, but it's defntiely starting to wind down. I do think alcohol makes people loosen up in larger social gatherings and I do think it makes it more fun, but I was very surprised when I was pregnant with DD1 when I went to a few bachelorettes and big 30th birthday bashes that I really did have just as much without drinking at all.... as long as everyone else was drinking haha.

  • +1 for mom wine culture.  I'll have a glass with dinner a few times a week.  I grew up with my mom having a glass pretty frequently. There are quite a few wineries around so wine tastings are one of the things DH and I do for dates.

@magnolia305 I have the same wine tumbler!   Also one of my coffee cups says "this could be wine"

I also have a cute little sign from etsy (it holds 2 wine glasses and 2 coffee cups) that says, "life happens between coffee and wine".  So true!
  • I no longer drink, (maybe about 5years since I've had more than 1 drink) but did when I was younger.
I'm sure this opinion is not so unpopular-
i find people who are drunk are annoying, and often abrasive. You can have plenty of deep conversations without alcohol.
  • Since pumpkin beer and all things pumpkin seem to be a popular opinion here, I'll share that my UO is that I can't stand pumpkin flavored things.  Actual pumpkin pie is awesome, but I can't stand the artificial pumpkin flavored stuff.  It makes me gag.  The same goes for pumpkin or other "flavored" beer.  Flavored coffee is the worse offender!
  • @babybro218, I don't even like pumpkin pie  :#:o

    Pumpkin beer is gross.
    Pumpkin spiced lattes are gross.
  • I am team 'all things pumpkin spice flavoured is gross'

that includes pie. Pumpkin pie is the worst dessert ever. Haha.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • I love pumpkin pie, eggnog, donuts,  etc.  But, UO: I think pumpkin coffee/lattes are disgusting. They just taste dirty or burnt to me. Same with chai... I just can't do the mouth feel.
  • Re: not drinking: I did drink when not pregnant, but my husband doesn't drink. Just to give more reasons, his is medical. We noticed he always had a stronger alcohol smell on his breath even after one drink, like definitely stronger than is normal after one drink. He had enzymes and blood tests and his liver just doesn't process alcohol as well as average. The doctor even thought he was lying about how much he drinks because his blood alcohol levels or liver enzymes or whatever were much higher than they should be for having like one or two drinks at night. Which is what we normally did. So he only drinks very occasionally. Like usually not at all. On our honeymoon though we split a bottle of wine about once a day so there are exceptions but he's typically very careful or just drinks something else besides alcohol. He has also never been alcoholic or a heavier drinker than people we generally know but yeah, his liver just doesn't process it the same. He is also a bar manager. So yeah, ironic.

My UO: I dislike game of thrones. I sit by my husband while he watches it but I just play on my phone or computer.
  • This weekend was full of being the only sober person at the party. I had a great time, but I did get bored after a few hours, while everyone else was happy to keep the party going. I also compensated for not drinking by eating twice as much as normal. I stopped drinking while TTC (after drinking while TTC didn't yield the desired results). It's probably been about a year since I've had a drink, but I dream about drinking almost every night ;)

I really have no interest in drinking either unless the drink is particularly tasty and there's an occasion for it. It doesn't bother me that others do, I'm just not really interested. I like moscato? Lol but that's about it and I only have it if I buy it for a girls night or something. Very few of my friends or family drink much, and it's just never been a big part of our social lives. DH comes from an Irish family and they definitely enjoy their beer and liquor, but even they really only pull it all out on special occasions or big get togethers. I did grow up in a religious environment so I'm sure that played a part in the general circles I was part of, though it wasn't a strict religious restriction as much as that's just not what people were into I guess. I hate partying, it stresses me out, so I never did that in college. I much prefer pizza and ice cream binges or coffee dates to drinking if I plan a get together. Plus it annoys me when everyone is drunk at places, maybe because I never have been lol. It just doesn't appeal to me to lose control and have a headache the next day. To each their own though, as long as you're responsible I have no judgement! If I liked it I'm sure I would drink more. I sure do drink a lot of coffee and eat a lot of ice cream ;)
I agree! I don't drink either, I never have. Neither does my family or my husband and his family.
Not just because of the religious environment I've grown up in but I never felt the need to try it, I've seen drunk people walking around and that doesn't look like something I really want to do. Also whilst socialising-each to their own but I don't see the need to drink while having a chat. I too am a pizza and ice cream kind of person! I'm a big foodie lol, I'm also not the type to go out to parties and things like that, it's just not me I don't enjoy heavy crowds around strangers, more of a family kind of person, especially since getting married because DH's family is so big.
There are many other ways to have fun for us, family gatherings and whatnot are so much fun when we're all together. I have no judgement though :) but we non-drinkers are not as boring as you may think lol

Sorry for joining in late to the convo, been a little off from bumping lately :( lazy days kicking back in

I just don't *get* people that don't drink.  I don't judge them or anything, but someone saying "i don't drink" to me is as if they are saying "I grew up on Venus".  Did they go through college and 20's without going to bars and abstaining at parties?  What do they do for social interactions with friends and do they still stay up until 2 am around the patio table  having deep conversations about life and laughing their heads off?  I get that I'm sounding very judgmental and that's not my intention.  I just don't personally know anyone that doesn't drink (other than someone who avoids it because their parent was an alcoholic, and that I totally understand).
Late to the party, but I don't really drink. I went to an overpriced, private Christian college where drinking was prohibited and doing so even off campus could get you booted. We had fun in other ways. :)
