2) Remind us what province/territory you're in?

3) Any questions about upcoming appointments since our system can be very different compared to the USA?

4) GTKY: Where's your favourite place to travel outside of Canada?

Re: Canadian Check In (09/05)

  • 1) How many weeks are you? 11+1

    2) Remind us what province/territory you're in? Manitoba

    3) Any questions about upcoming appointments since our system can be very different compared to the USA? I'm just nervous for my NT scan. Waiting still to find out when it is. I have an appointment this Friday with my OB and I'll be sure to ask what is all entailed and what I can expect.

    4) GTKY: Where's your favourite place to travel outside of Canada? I loved going to New York. I'm a huge Broadway fan! So that was an incredible trip to take!

  • 1) How many weeks are you?

    12+6 ...13 weeks tomorrow

    2) Remind us what province/territory you're in?

Ontario - durham region. about 25 minutes outside of downtown toronto.

    3) Any questions about upcoming appointments since our system can be very different compared to the USA?

I just am so sad that there won't be another ultrasound until the anatomy scan. I'm hoping that my doctor brings out the doppler at my 14wk appointment.... but he hasn't mentioned it at all

    4) GTKY: Where's your favourite place to travel outside of Canada?

Vegas! I've only been the one time but it was SO MUCH FUN
  • @bb3vj3n, I hope your doctor uses the Doppler too. My OB uses the Doppler at every single appointment starting at 12 weeks. I thought this was standard. I hope it is for your sake!

  • Thanks for starting this @justkeeptrying

    1) How many weeks are you?  13 tmw as well! Unless my date changes this week at my u/a. It's had to get an u/s here since it's so booked up I have to travel hour and half for the first one at least my 20 week one is close to my house

    2) Remind us what province/territory you're in?
BC and it so smokey summer can go now. Bring on fall!!!

    3) Any questions about upcoming appointments since our system can be very different compared to the USA?
    Well
I went to my family doctor originally
and I always plannned to go to a midwife clinic because that's where everyone I know went and it is so lovely in there. Anyways. Right after I went to see my GP they made all these appointments with there staff OB for me. And now I don't really know what to do ? I have an appointment with him tmw and I'm gonna see how that goes and then do you guys think it would be inappropriate to ask to cancel other appointments and just tlll them I'm switching to a midwife ? ( midwife is also closer to my house compare to my doctors )
also the midwife clinic has 5 midwifes and an OB.
Rather than this OB who is also a family Doctor I believe ?  It's weird and I feel like they pushed him on me when I told them I was already planning to see a mid wife.

    4) GTKY: Where's your favourite place to travel outside of Canada?
hm i did love Palm Springs it's was right up my ally. I don't love busy so it was nice to sit by a pool knit and then go to the thrift shops. Then we also did walks thought the Joshua tree forest and plam oasis.  but that's hard question since I haven't been so many places I want to go !
  • @KLmyz  I would tell them now.  better sooner than later. if you want to go the midwife route you should. I think sometimes our doctors just do what they normally do and don't really consider individual desires....maybe your doctor's assistant just assumed?
  • Yea I kinda think that's what happened @bb3vj3n
I also didn't like the way they book everything. They basically don't ask you if a time or day works they just give it to you. Since they are so busy at the practice you don't have much choice in appointments I guess.
And I just get better vibes from the maternity clinic I wanted to go to. The only reason I went to the GP was to get an u/s booked and confirmation since the other clinic won't see you till you have those ( which I told them over the phone )
so I think I will just tell the front desk tmw after my appointment I'll be switching to the maternity clinic
  • 1) How many weeks are you?
    13+5
    2) Remind us what province/territory you're in?
Ontario - 45 min North of Toronto

    3) Any questions about upcoming appointments since our system can be very different compared to the USA?
Not really. This is the third time doing this. Decided not to do genetic testing because it wouldn't change our choices anyways.

    4) GTKY: Where's your favourite place to travel outside of Canada?
Hmmmm, South Carolina. I love it. The air, the ocean...so peaceful to me.

@KLmyz, it is very okay for you to mention that you plan on going with a midwife. Many women choose that route (me included), and I bet it was just assumption on the assistants part.
  • @KLmyz, if you still want the appointment with the OB, I would do it. It's an extra appointment and that way you can make sure you definitely want your midwife rather than the OB. I would then just cancel after that. My sister has a similar situation. She used the OB for her first 2 kids and then wanted to try a midwife for her 3rd. She had booked an appointment with the OB while waiting to find out if she got in with the midwife. She did, so she just cancelled the OB appointments. It wasn't a big deal for them.
  • Thanks ladies @justkeeptrying @kalawa and @bb3vj3n I think I'll call the midwives tmw befor my appointment to make sure I am accepted as a patient and then after my ob appt tell them I will be continuing there !
  • Hi all! Thanks for starting this back up, was missing out Canadian ladies check ins!

    1) How many weeks are you? 12+2 according to my TB, a few days further along according to ultrasounds

    2) Remind us what province/territory you're in? Vancouver area, B.C. (And yes @KLmyz the smoky haze is back! 35 degree weather + smoky haze + pregnant lady with naseau =  :s )

    3) Any questions about upcoming appointments since our system can be very different compared to the USA? My doctor told me to go for the $550 prenatal scan, so I did. Results came back everything is fine, but he told me that was it, no more testing...doesn't the NT scan look for other things? Like spina bifida ? He didn't mention that at all and I'm feeling frustrated. Also feeling like I should have just taken the free blood test originally to save $550 but it's too late now !

    4) GTKY: Where's your favourite place to travel outside of Canada? Caribbean (Barbados, Bahamas), Hawaii, Mexico...also loved Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, and Japan...with a DD and one on the way though I think our travel plans will be a lot less exotic!
  • @mountain_girl, I'm surprised by this. It's so rare we Canadians have to pay out of pocket like that. I've never had any testing in my pregnancies. This is the first one we are having an NT scan for due to circumstances of our miscarriage.

Was your test done privately or why the out of pocket expense?
  • @justkeeptrying I'm 37, so AMA...I could have done the free test and NT scan (free for woman over 35), but if I got any sort of warning results, I would have done the $550 test anyways, so I just did it...now I'm regretting it because there were no issues...and I could use the extra $550...I'm very naive and just listen to doctors, I should have talked to more people and done more research ... c'est la vie  :/
  • @mountain_girl  I feel strongly that if you are AMA your personal insurance should cover it no? I'm not sure it would be covered under your care card.... but then again I feel at 37 it should be covered by the provincial insurance!
  • 1) How many weeks are you? 11+1

    2) Remind us what province/territory you're in? Manitoba

    3) Any questions about upcoming appointments since our system can be very different compared to the USA?
Nucal translucency scan next week. More blood work next week to follow my ITP.  And I need to decide if we will be shelling out for the Harmony test.

    4) GTKY: Where's your favourite place to travel outside of Canada?
As a family, we've loved camping, so just short trips into the States for that.  In my younger life I travelled a lot and can't wait to share those places with my family.

  • @mountain_girl I don't think the NT looks for spina bifida.  That is part of the 20 week anatomy scan, which you should still get.

  • 1) How many weeks are you? 12 weeks on Friday

    2) Remind us what province/territory you're in? Edmonton, AB

    3) Any questions about upcoming appointments since our system can be very different compared to the USA? I never did the genetic testing and nuchal ultrasound with DD but I'm scheduled to do it this Friday with this one. How long does it take to get results?

    4) GTKY: Where's your favourite place to travel outside of Canada? NOLA and Italy
  • @lifeisbetteronthered it does actually - on my NT which goes hand in hand with the early firstt trimester blood screen - the paperwork says they are testing for 3 things - trisonomy 21 (dow ns) trisonomy 18 and spina bifida. if you are talking only about the scan portion though you are right - they are specifically just measuring the nuchal lucency.

Also - I just feel the need to say " Good morning second trimester!" FINALLY.  I'm honest to god not trying to rub it in for those of you not quite there yet ...... it's just such a physical and emotional relief for me to know I've finally gotten past (officially) this milestone.  *TW* 've never made it before.

  • Yay congrats! @bb3vj3n I'm right here with you!  It's a good morning
  • 1) How many weeks are you? 14 weeks

    2) Remind us what province/territory you're in? I live in Toronto, about 20 minutes outside of downtown.

    3) Any questions about upcoming appointments since our system can be very different compared to the USA? I have my first appointment with my OB next Wednesday. Not really sure what to expect, if it's just an appointment to meet them or if it will be more involved. So far I had just been going to my family doctor for my prenatal care. I had the NT scan and blood test last Friday but haven't heard back regarding results.

    4) GTKY: Where's your favourite place to travel outside of Canada? NYC is definitely one of my favourite places to visit. I have also been to Hawaii as a kid and would love to go back as an adult!

AshleyB09042015 I had my test last Friday and I haven't heard back as of yet. Hopefully they will call soon with the results otherwise I will ask about it at my appointment next week. That probably didn't help much but that has been my experience so far.
