  • Lol @Justkeeptrying that is kind of cute but yea I wouldn't be able to do it either. I love Nathaniel for a boy but DD is Natalia, it's just too close.

  • @pettycrocker I love Natalia for a girl--nice work. DH wouldn't get on board with that one, unfortunately.

I have a laundry list of names that remind me of rascal students or major meltdown, troublemakers that I just can't shake from memory. I think it's a workplace hazard as a teacher  In that same vein, I have a lot of names that have become really near and dear to me because of some incredible individuals I've had the opportunity to teach and see grow into young adults in our community!

Lindsay -- crazy woman who stalked my husband at his work and then at our home for the better part of a year. My daughter would never be a Lindsay.

Anything with an 'M' at this point -- my DD and our dog both have M names and one more just gets too confusing when you're shoutin' names for dinner

Caleb -- I LOVE this name. DH won't even kind of entertain it. I am super bummed, so in a way, I hope it's a girl so I don't have to fight this one.

  • So MH really loves the name Merrick--it's Scottish. But my SIL also loves it and she has the worst taste in names. As in their middle child knows that they named her LAKyn because Little Ass Kicker from the Walking Dead and yn to rhyme with Adelyn, their oldest. As soon as she said she loved it, nope nope nope dude. Haha.

Ex names are out, like Adam and Megan.

I love the name Finn or any variation of, and MH is a firm no on that.
  • @antoto best gif. Yeah. It's bad when your three year old tells people that story
  • @LiveNLove44 - Mine is Caleb too! For me, that's the name of my only significant ex, so DH would hate if he even knew I liked the name.
  • I like Donovan, after Ray Donovan.  If I even mentioned it my whole family would know and I'd probably get laughed at.
  • I love the name Claire but it rhymes with our last name so nope.
  • We love Claire as well @amylonghorn Unfortunately our last name is one syllable so I think it clashes and then a family member ended up naming their daughter Clara.
  • My wife's name is also a musical term, so I've been amusing myself with other musical baby names like Melody and Lyric, and just seeing how silly I can get. I think Treble might be a bit on-the-nose though.

I also like using unexpected names for a girl like Tobi, or Ryan (except I can't because my bestie's name is Ryan, boo). I'm a little bit sad I'm not having a boy only because Tobias is one of the few character names I love that wouldn't also be suuuuper obvious (Menolly, Phedre, and Amalthea all kinda stand out).

I have a Claire and a one syllable last name.  ;)

Our last name rhymes AND is one syllable so double whammy!!
  • I think Clarissa is just so very beautiful, but I can't get my husband on board.
  • I've always liked the name Mason, but it's my brother in laws brother's name. Which would be kind of weird, but we also had a little fling in our college days so that would make it even weirder.
  • I love the name Sebastian King for a boy but husband hates the name Sebastian so that's never going to happen for me.
  • My name (Georgia) was really uncommon growing up, and I liked never having to share a name with anyone in school. It biases me towards NOT choosing a currently popular name, but a lot of my very favorite names for both genders (Claire, Nora, William, George...) are at the top or shooting up the popularity charts.

I also think the girls' name "Everly" is just so beautiful (also rising in popularity), but both our families are Irish Catholic (DH still works in our Catholic high school), and DH seems to squash non traditional (cough not saint) names pretty swiftly.
  • I'm Irish and DH is Italian. He's from Italy and all of his family is still there. So even though the kids will have his last name, he still thinks he gets to veto Irish names because "they can't be pronounced by Italians." Every time he tries for an Italian name I'm like Nope. We've got some neutral names that can be pronounced in English and Italian but it makes me sad that my kids won't have any Irish names in them. I'm advocating for middle names now.

  • I would love the names Sophia, Lily, and Wren but those were all shot down by my fiance. Oh well.  :D

  • I like the name Blake but for a girl and I know everyone in my fam would be against it. Especially DH, I tried to give this name to DD and got a big fat nope from DH. Also, at a past wedding I shot, one of the bridesmaids names was Kenra and I've loved that name ever since. I told a few people that it was on my list and they knocked it down pretty quickly. One friend said that was the name of her hair product.
But I still love both and I also like the sound of them together -- Kenra Blake.  Another issue with that name is that people would always be mis-pronouncing it as Kendra :/
  • @ShawnnaO MH also hates Sebastian but I just love it. And Spencer. But he hates that one too. Haha. And all of the boy names I like that begin with the letter P.

@gh515 okay first of all I love Georgia. And Savannah. And Carolina. And Charlotte. And now that you mention it, I <3 Everly too! MH doesn't like any of the southern place names through. Just send me all of YH's rejects that you love though. Maybe I can talk MH into one of them.
  • @mdfarmchick I always joked when I was younger that I'd do all state names or southern locales when I had kids. But Savannah and Carolina and Charlotte are all stunningly perfect names in real life, even for a Chicagoan! Will pass on any future inspiration. : p And, of course, I have to concur with you on Georgia. <3

I won't lie - when I first read "Kenra" I assumed you had a typo and forgot the "d".  I would bet I wouldn't be the only person to make that mistake lol.
  • I love Delaney but DH hates it. We agreed on 5 names the other night but I am sure we will hate them next week.

  • Here's another one - we're huge Texas Rangers fans, and I would almost jokingly mention naming a boy Nolan Ryan *last name*. My MIL would act like that was crazy, but there's a lil part of me that keeps this option alive.
  • Due to Jewish tradition (a previous poster highlighted the rules) we're pretty much limited to G names for this baby. My husband's grandmother passed away last year, and her name started with a G, so we need to honor her. There are luckily no recent deaths in my family.

However, to make it more difficult we need a name that sounds normal in English and Russian, and I basically hate all G names that fit that criteria except one, which is DH's grandfather's name so it's a no go.

Assuming I didn't have the G issue, Julia/Julie would be a no because all except one of DH's exes were Julia or Julie. Also no Emma, even though I love it, because it's way too close to my name. I also like Sasha for a girl, but that's the nickname for FIL's name. I also like Arielle, but my husband is a red head and our last name has a water/ocean connotation so that would just set up a bunch of teasing for a potentially red headed girl.

We named our son my favorite boy name, so I'm not feeling as strongly there, except for hating the vast majority of G names.

    Point proven..
  • Tallulah - I've always like it but DH hates it and I know generally people think it's ridiculous

Lilah- My favorite name for decades but we didn't use it with DD and her name sounds too similar to it.

Jemima- Because the pancake people had to make it a stereotype.

Anything ending in -ER because our last name starts with RE-, so no Juniper despite <3

Zosia, Esmeralda, Aoife, or anything else I love but feels too much like cultural appropriation.
