Babymoon ideas?

My DH and I love to travel and we want to take one more trip before the babe. My second trimester, prime vaca time, will be in fall. In my dream world we'd head to a beach and relax. Unfortunately ZIKA is a thing now :-/ any ideas or advice on where to go? We of course are also considering the budget since we'll have a new LO to take care of. Currently live in the Midwest so it will be getting chilly here. Thoughts?

Ps- DH thinks we missed out on the collective opportunity to call this a babe-cation instead lol.

Re: Babymoon ideas?

  • I said I would NEVER go to vegas pregnant and didn't understand why people ever would. Well when we wanted to go on a babymoon last pregnancy, we found an incredible deal to vegas at a hotel that would normally be out of our budget. It took some effort for my husband to convince me, but he promised the trip would be all about eating and relaxing by the pool. Especially because the hotel was so nice/our room was super luxurious with an awesome view and we have a list of restaurants we love, I was convinced and it was actually so great. We essentially ate, lounged around the pool, and cosied up in fancy robes in the room. It was summer, so it was really hot, and we only ventured outside when I wanted to. We're talking about doing it again this time around if my son ever decides to sleep reliably where we can have him stay with the grandparents for a couple nights!

  • @EmmyMommy123 my ex husband and I also babymooned in Vegas. It was also our one year anniversary so it worked out great. I initially dreaded the thought of being there pregnant but for what it's worth we had a great time. He can eat dog poop now though.
  • @EmmyMommy123 DH and I go to vegas for Christmas every year by ourselves.  We were thinking of continuing the tradition for our babymoon....but really don't want to be around all the smoking...

That would put us at 32 weeks...don't even know if I can fly.  We are going to San Francisco for Xmas instead if allowed to fly.   Seahawks in 49ers domain. EEK :). not wearing our gear.

  • We drove to Vancouver and Seattle last time st the very beginning of 2nd tri. Then in 3rd tri we went to Banff for DH to snowboard and for me to have a spa day. It was great and we got a nice room with a jacuzzi. Then DH broke his ankle on this trip and it was winter and I was 8 months pregnant Andrea all the snow shovelling became my job. Not impressed.

I think Hawaii is Zika free? I believe Bali is too and I strongly recommend Bali.  I was planning on making the trip but have changed my mind and am going to holiday in Australia instead- which is also an option that is free of Zika!

We never really did babymoons with the last three children. But our anniversary is in the fall and last year we went to the Bahamas.  I'm trying to talk DH into Ireland or Germany (my cousin is stationed there and she'd let us stay with her so small bonus not paying for a hotel)...but he is being anti-airplane and just wants to drive to Niagra Falls, Ontario. I've been to the falls before, my mom's boyfriend took us years ago, and I want to go somewhere I've never been but have always wanted to go.

  • @Chawk17 yes, the smoke was a concern of mine too. We didn't hang out in the casinos besides walking through, so it wasn't bad.

@ashhsa we went to Bali, Lombok and Gili Trawangan as a pre-baby trip and it was beautiful. Did see some babymooners too. However, my husband and I both got terrible Bali belly, so I'd be afraid to return while pregnant.
  • we both have a week off in september and we were planning on doing an anniversary trip then anyways so we will probably combine it. Thinking of a roadtrip through the mountains just at a leisurely pace, stopping at any cool tourist attractions etc.

Aeml1985 so not looking forward to the Winter! Hubby is a pilot so it looks like all the shovelling will fall on me. Im thinking its time to get to know the neighbours so they will take pity on me!

  • Oh Bali belly is something I've never heard of but now that I did a quick google search yikes. Honestly I'd love to do Europe, Spain or Italy especially but we don't have the money for a thousand dollar flight for each of us. That and the flight time. I don't think 13+ hours flying pregnant would be great. Did Hawaii for our honeymoon and I'd LOVE to go back but same issues I've mentioned already. Australia id say the same, the price would be out of control plus like 24 hours of travel.

I so wish that Mexico was safe! I'll think about vegas, that's not a bad idea honestly. We've just happened to already go within the past year.
  • We were thinking of Vegas this year - what hotels do you recommend?
  • Scottsdale is nice.... and would be warm in the Fall!!

    What about Austin?

It depends if you want to stay on strip or freemont.
We stayed at the Stratosphere this last Christmas and it was nice.
But honestly, DH and I prefer the party atmosphere on freemont.  Which is where we will stay after chawk is born. DH smokes and we hang out in the casinos so not going while pregnant. And um I need my yard daquri :)

    I think the strip.
a daiquiri sounds good - I may need to get a nonalcoholic one soon!

We have stayed at the Monte Carlo multiple times because it's very budget friendly, the pool has lots of chairs, and it's pretty central to the area of the strip we like to hang out in. We also stayed at the flamingo when we found an awesome deal and it was ok, the room was renovated, and the location was good, but there were some more sketchy moments than I'm not used to. Like when a guy was going up in the elevator while we were coming down in the morning covered in dried blood  :s

For our babymoon we stayed at the cosmo and it was so nice. There were two nice pools (although the week after we were there there was a fire in one so not sure how it's been renovated since), our room was sooooo nice and had a perfect view of the fountains so we sat there in the evenings. It was a really good deal as normally it would be out of our budget to stay there. I'd also love to try the Aria as it seems similar in luxury.

Ive also stayed at the Vdara which was a great in between. No casino, so you avoid the smoke, it's across a parking lot from Aria and a skywalk to Bellagio, and the rooms were nice and like a little apartment. Really lovely bathroom with a soaker tub in each one!

I could go on forever if you ask me about restaurants  :p
  • For Vegas, I recommend avoiding the weekends if possible when the hoards of drunk, smoking partiers come.  Mid week is more low key.

We did Vegas for our babymoon and it was nice; pools, dinners, massages, shows.  Then the weekend came and I wanted to get the heck OUT..

Good point, I think part of why we got such a good deal is it was smack dab in the middle of the week, and it definitely didn't seem as busy as other trips.
  • I'm bringing this back up because I'm having the hardest time figuring this out.

I have free flight credit on American Airlines that has to be used by January.  Can't transfer it, it's three tickets in my name, DH's name, and DS's name that were credited to us when we couldn't go to Barbados earlier this summer due to Zika.  So--yay, free flight!

I'm struggling with finding a place to go for a short babymoon.  We would need to go late September or early October or wait until mid-December since our schedules are hectic and DH can only afford to take about 2 days off from work since he's really busy.

Any ideas on a good long weekend trip that would be a reasonable flight from DC?  Looking for laid back options rather than cities, but somewhere that has a nice resort. We are going to Florida for Thanksgiving, so I kind of don't want to go back though I would be open to the Gulf coast since I haven't spent much time in that area.

  • How about Charleston?
  • We didn't do anything last time, but since we had to cancel our cruise because of Zika, we ARE doing something this go around. One of the biggest problems that's we have is we live in Texas and it takes FOREVER to drive across. I told DH we would probably have to fly. I really really want to go up North East but I don't know how well I'd handle all the tours and stuff I want to do.
  • I'm thinking of either waiting until my daughter is with her dad for a weekend or sending her over to grandpa's house and just spending the weekend on the coast but it'll be cold & DH is already stressing about finances so he may not agree. I'd love to go back to Monterey Bay for the weekend. We had so much fun there on our honeymoon plus the food at Fisherman's Warf is awesome!

  • We are not doing baby moon. We almost didn't do a honeymoon. We are going camping tomorrow though!
  • @awb1216 that's a nice problem to have! What about somewhere in New England In the fall? The weather is a little cooler and the crowds are gone. There are some nice resorts on cape cod and on the coast of Maine.  During the foliage season it's beautiful.

Or if you're looking for a poolside lounging type of thing, Clearwater beach or St Pete on the gulf of FL is very nice.

The kalahari in the poconos is amazing.  We went in April,  it's the biggest indoor water park in the country.

Google Bar Harbor, ME!! We are road tripping from D.C. up there bc we have some time off, but it looks like the cutest, quaint area with lots of outdoorsy stuff to do (my personal fav), def kid friendly, and great food (requirement for all my travels). I think the flight is under 2 hours so it wouldn't be miserable and wouldn't waste your precious vacay time!
  • Oh Quebec City too
  • @awb1216 we're  also in the DC region ( NoVa) and are planning a long weekend in Charleston in October.
  • @awb1216, @corcola and @caitb13 Hi neighbors! NoVA girl here too.

Anyways, if you're going in fall, love the idea of seeing the leaves change in New England. Definitely no zika there. I'm sure there are resort type places up there so you can still relax by an indoor pool. Since you're hitting a beach area for Thanksgiving, it'd be a definite different vibe.
  • Bar Harbor is awesome! We spent July 4th there with the in-laws. Check the dates, though. The season ends some time in October and the town and the park close for the Fall/Winter.
  • New England is supposed to be having an amazing foliage display this year. Check for peaks in whatever area you might decide to go to. The only thing that could ruin it is massive rainfall in the few weeks leading up to the change.
  • @awb1216 Have you considered Asheville, NC?  It's absolutely beautiful there in the fall!  It has a super cute, walkable downtown with SO many great restaurants, tons of microbreweries (for hubs), and a really laid-back and relaxing atmosphere.  The Omni Grove Park Inn is a gorgeous resort there with a magnificent spa and lots of great dining options.  We stayed there for our most recent babymoon; first one was in St. Thomas (back before Zika).

Another idea that's easy to get to from the mid-Atlantic is Bermuda.  It won't be as hot in the fall as it is in summer, but there's no Zika; and the beaches, food, and scenery are all wonderful.

We have been having massive rainfall all summer,  maybe it will stop now and you'll be good!

Stowe, VT would be gorgeous in the fall! I have only been in the summer and winter, but want to go in the fall some year. There are tons of resort areas and many have indoor pools since it is primarily a winter destination. There are tons of things to do and see there and many trails through the woods that are snowshoe and cross country ski trails in the winter that would be great for experiencing the foliage. If you do not want to travel far from the airport, I would recommend Burlington, VT.
  • @PeachGal23 I just googled Asheville, NC and it is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I texted DH and told him to check it out and pick some dates. I'm even looking at staying at the Omni Grove Park Resort. Thanks for the tip! Now I just wonder if its tough to get to from the Midwest.
  • These are all awesome suggestions, thank you guys so much!  I'm loving the fall in New England idea, I think I will just have to sell my husband on it.  He loves Maine so I think that may be a possibility.

Do you have any recommendations in Quebec City? DH and I were thinking about a road trip there this fall. I've driven through the province but haven't gotten to spend any time there :)
  • Are you planning to stay in Montreal or Quebec City? Both are fun but Quebec City is a further drive north and way prettier and more "French".  There's tons of nice hotels both inside and right outside the old city walls.  One thing to keep in mind is that it's a walking city and it's very hilly, so if you're feeling less up for walking lots of hills being pregnant, you might want to find a hotel inside the city walls where less walking is required.  It's beautiful and romantic and you're going to love it!
  • @Ashoes123 We haven't decided for 100%, but are leaning more towards Quebec City. I will definitely look into staying within the city walls, I am only 14 and a half weeks and already winded walking up the stairs to my office lol.
  • We're doing a cross country road trip!! We're driving uhaul moving van and towing our car, 30 feet of fun! Best babymoon ever, all 2,079 miles of it!
