Prenatal?

whats everyone using for prenatals? I spent the extra money this time (second preg) and got the expensive "smarty pants" brand. My OB said to not use that one bc it doesn't contain iron!
I'm wondering if I could take it back since I just got it the other day from target. It was $27!
Anyways, what's everyone taking?

@MeganRusticBarn were you anemic last pregnancy? If you weren't, I'm surprised your OB advised against that prenatal. Personally I've taken the generic CVS brand gummies for years (I'm on my third pregnancy now) and they don't contain iron. My OB hasn't ever suggested I take something else. I've never had iron issues though, so...?

  • Can you just buy iron by itself?
  • I've been taking the VitaFusion gummies for nearly 3 years. No iron (which I prefer) and they contain DHA. They're kinda yummy, too lol

    Femara 7.5 + Ovidrel = BFP! Due 4/15/18

  • Garden of Life mykind ORGANICS PRENATAL ONCE DAILY. I like the whole food vitamins plus this has folate not folic acid (folic acid is the synthetic form of folate and 40% of people can't properly process folic acid). It's expensive, but I feel like it's worth the investment.

  • I also just started the Smarty Pants ones and my midwife said they looked fine. She didn't say anything about them not containing iron. I personally like the vitafusion ones better though and will take those again when I finish this bottle.

  • I use Rainbow Light Prenatals and take an additional Folate supplement and DHA supplement

  • I use the Smarty Pants ones too, because they have folate instead of folic acid and I have a MTHFR deficiency. Plus they're yummy. I was taking Thornes for a while but they were so big and hard to swallow and made me throw up.
  • I get the Nature Made prenatal + DHA. Most of the other options at Target were gummies and I can't do gummy vitamins. I think they're like $28 for a 3 month supply.

    Me (33). DH (37). DD (2.2012). MCs x4. After 4 years & 7 months, due 4.2018!

  • VitaFusion gummies here too. I did the same last pregnancy. They don't upset my stomach if I don't eat with them and they are yummy :)

  • @looeeze I'm taking the Thornes right now because I wanted a whole-foods based vitamin with folate. But they ARE huge and lately I've been feeling really nauseated after taking them. Bleh. Maybe I'll check out Smarty Pants.
  • I take rainbowlight prenatals. Love this brand!
  • I use the same as @Mattel.  Naturemade with DHA.

Same, although my PCP said I will probably want to start taking a different PNV after I meet with my OB. She made it sound like the OB will write me a script?
  • @JJMNO1616 my OB put me on a script when I told him we'd be TTC.

Does anyone know a brand that gives you the full amount of Vitamin E?  I am having a hard time balancing that out.  I can't take a supplement in addition to make up the missing 50%, because all the supplies are ridiculously high doses, and high Vitamin E can cause heart defects.  So frustrating.

  • @mountainsmama Yeah I could barely swallow them, and they made me feel so terrible. I think there's a liquid prenatal that's whole-foods based on Amazon. But for now, the Smarty Pants are just fine for me. Hope you find one that works!
  • Smarty pants people - you have to take 6 a day?
  • @saralee797-2 Yeah. But they're delicious so to me it's like candy. I just shove 'em in.
  • @JJMNO1616  Yeah my Dr said he was going to write a prescription for one, but I think he forgot.  I took the Naturemade my entire pregnancy last time.  He said OTC prenatals usually have 800mcg of folic acid and they like you to have a full mg.

  • I take the One A Day Prenatal, but my last pregnancy I took the Rainbow Light. They made me sick so I wound up only taking them through the first trimester and then switched to gummies +DHA. I spent 20 minutes in the Vitamin aisle comparing viramins and finally chose the One A Day.  I haven't seen my OB yet. Does anyone know if these are OK or should I start taking something else?
  • Vitafusion gummies here too! I love it

  • @ngolimento  The two pack of the One A Day women's prenatal with DHA has 100% of the daily rec for Vitamin E, if you're still looking for one that does. I like this brand pretty well so far.

Thank you!  I may switch over.  It's been driving me nuts

  • I used to use the Naturemade with DHA. My iron is always low so it helped. This pregnancy i can't stand swallowing pills so doing the gummies. Which are great but miss the iron! May have to switch between gummies and some kind of chewable with iron.
  • I am taking the target brand prenantals plus DHA.
  • I use Rainbow Light Prenatals and take an additional Folate supplement and DHA supplement
This is what I'm taking as well. Both of them!

Me too, except not the additional folate supp, just the Rainbow Light 1 a Day and a prenatal DHA.

  • I am taking the Target Up&Up brand prenatal that comes with 2 bottles, 1 is a prenatal, and the other is DHA/EPA. There was another 1 that had the DHA included in the prenatal pill, but the size of the pill was HUGE and it was more expensive, so I opted for the seperate pills. The generic brands have all the same contents, but are half the price. Last pregnancy I did the Up&Up brand gummies because the normal prenatals were making me sick, but due to a blood clotting disorder the doctor wanted me to have the iron so I switched to taking my pill at night and it wasn't an issue.
  • Nature made prenatals.
  • Yes!!! 6 gummies a day!

  • @lesliegolem if you need something with iron you could ask your OB if you can take a children's Flintstones chewable vitamin along with your prenatal.  I know some pregnant women that would take them.
  • @looeeze I'm taking the Thornes right now because I wanted a whole-foods based vitamin with folate. But they ARE huge and lately I've been feeling really nauseated after taking them. Bleh. Maybe I'll check out Smarty Pants.
@mountainsmomma I have been taking Thrones too. I hate that you have to take 3 to get the daily need and that it doesn't already include DHA. I am thinking of switching as well.
  • I was taking One-A-Day that has the 2 pills, but it was upsetting my stomach. My doctor sent me home with a ton of different free samples to try so I'm currently taking Vita Pearl and will work my way through pills until I find the magic one! Any advice of what to look for in a prenatal to help with the stomach issues?

I take the 1 a day with the added gel pill
I did my last pregnancy too and everything came out fine. I definitelt rely on them!

Everyone is talking about taking the One-A-Day brand, but there's 2 pills. I only take one pill. Should I be taking something extra?
  • I am taking Trader Joe's plus an iron pill, which I was taking during my TTC period but when this finishes I'm going to switch to gummies. The smell and size of these pills makes me nauseous.

Garden of life prenatals, love them! I also take Vitamin shoppe omega 3 and calcium citrate. This is my second baby now and I have a happy healthy 1 1/2 year old that I took the same thing for.
  • I've taken one a day (two pills pink vitamin and yellow dha). I've taken it for three pregnancies now. No issues and I take it at night.
