I side eye the shower thing too. It feels gift grabby.
UO: I think cities are the worst place to live. High crime, high pollution, nothing green but in parks. Low community. I don't understand why people want to live in them.
See I'm not sure I side eye the shower thing, and my reasoning is that my friends suck and my family is all in CA while I'm in TN. I'm not super close to any group of friends, mostly just casual friends. So if I wanted to have a shower I had to ask one of my friends to host it, which I did and it no one really came. This time DH wants to have a BBQ for his friends and do something super casual with them. So I've told him he can do that, I don't care, I'll just be there because it's my house and I'll probably invite my friends if they want to come, but I doubt they will. I think if/when we do this thing that we wont give them a registry or a diaper party thing, just a hang out.
@auntieraindrop pumpkin spice can die. As well as pumpkin pie. It's disgusting. And the texture is just terrible.
AFM: I hate summer. It's hot, sticky and I spend all my time jumping from one air conditioned place to another. I was made to live in a climate that is a steady 65 degrees.
@Cricket99 So I'm from Maine, which means I should be used to cool temperatures, but I'm not. At 65 degrees I have goose bumps and feel like I might die. I was made for a constant 80 degrees.
I am a total lover of all things pumpkin....pie, coffee, cheesecake, actual pumpkins, pumpkin seeds, etc. I think it has to do with Halloween being my favorite holiday. After my Dad passed when I was young, my mom focused heavily on Halloween because it was still a holiday she could celebrate without being too sad. So I guess I equate pumpkin to all the amazing childhood memories I have.
I'm not sure I have an actual UO today, but I'll come back if I think of one lol.
@auntieraindrop wrong, wrong, super wrong! Pumpkin is amazing! I literally eat it straight from the can. (Though I will admit some companies can take it too far, I don't need pumpkin spice toilet bowl cleaner or pumpkin flavored m&ms)
@madcouplewithabox totally disagree! Cities are amazing: great parks, tons of culture, museums, easy access to sporting events and shows, excellent restaurants. And so walkable!
@supercoolstephy yeah, I know that would be an UO. I guess I just think calling it a shower implies that guests will bring you a gift, so I don't see a way to throw a shower (even if you don't give out registry information, which here's another UO I don't believe in including in invites anyway, people should ask the hostess for it) without it feeling like asking people to buy you gifts. I do totally get wanting a party to celebrate the new baby though, so it's tough. It sorta sounds like that's what you and DH are doing anyway, join us for a last hurrah before the baby! I just think once it's called a shower people feel obligated to bring gifts.
DS1: Nov. 2013 DS2: Jan. 2016 DS3: Dec. 2017 Baby #4 on the way!
@KatieEl Yeah, I don't want to call it a shower so I don't know what to call it, because I really couldn't care less if people get us anything. I just want an excuse for cake and DH wants to drink beer with his friends. haha Let us eat cake party. haha
I also don't want to a sip & see once the baby is here because I wont have my house clean enough for guests to come over in that capacity for a while. haha
@supercoolstephy people that host gorgeous sip and see's are unicorns in my eyes! No way am I together enough at that point to be showered, well dressed, perfectly clean house, and adorably curated food. Let alone decorated. My out loud excuse is that winter babies make me nervous to have the extra germs around, but really I can't imagine that added stress post partum!
DS1: Nov. 2013 DS2: Jan. 2016 DS3: Dec. 2017 Baby #4 on the way!
@supercoolstephy my SIL hosted a Mexican themed sip and see completed with a mariachi band and rented tables and linens. I agree it was super over the top and my nephew really didn't want everyone trying to hold him
@supercoolstephy When I was pregnant with DD we had a co-ed backyard "Baby-Q" bash and used an invite similar to this one. Ours did not include any registry/gift information on the invite. I thought it was a cute idea.
@burnsmommy27 I can't get into Game of thrones either. I just don't get it.
@KatieEl I side eye people who throw their own showers just so they can get gifts. I also know someone who invited all the women on her wedding invite list to her shower for the sole purpose of getting more gifts.
I don't have one at the moment but if I think of one I'll come back!
For my UO i will b killed by all the GOT fan club or the GOT thread ladies in this board.... (but so sorry......)... I just don't understand this. I tried to watch an episode after we had GOT thread posted, but it just went like rocket over my brain... Couldn't understand anything...
Hey I enjoy GOT but it's definitely not for everyone. I have several friends who have stopped watching it because of the violence, particularly towards the female characters. @sonalisharma Did you start at the beginning or jump into a recent season? There is SO much going on at this point, I find I need to watch the "previously..." bit at the beginning because they sometimes show relevant scenes from ages ago that I'd forgotten about but the things happening now don't make sense without.
@sonalisharma I would definitely go back and watch from the beginning if you have any interest in it... there are SO many story lines / back stories that it could be hard to pick up right now.
That sounds like a true fan, trying to convince me to join the club... , i will surely try to get a hang of previous seasons and see if i can understand them... Then you can have one more soldier by your side
More pumpkin pie for me then! I discovered this bourbon pumpkin pie with pecan struesel topping last year and OMG. I probably made 5 of them between October and December.
@sonalisharma I loved the books but it took me three episodes to get into the show. So, give yourself four and then give up if you still aren't feeling it!
@KatieEl totally with you on the shower thing. Hosting a party is totally different than hosting a shower. If it includes a link to a registry and you're throwing it yourself, I'm seriously not going nor am I sending anything. Unpopular or not. I guess one of those diaper bashes (or a stock the bar type of thing) wouldn't bother me if all I was expected to do was bring diapers and then everything else was provided, but if there was a specific link to which diapers, again, I'd be annoyed!
Man, I love PSL and peppermint mocha, but my love affair of peppermint mochas is now going 20 years strong and it's clear which side I fall on should I have to choose. My tip for anyone who doesn't want to splurge on the peppermint mocha all of the time, get a cafe misto (half caff) and ask them to add one pump chocolate and one pump peppermint. I called it the poor girl's mocha all through grad school and it totally meets my craving without costing >$5.50 (more like $3-3.50).
My UO is that I guess I don't care if you throw your own shower. I know it's super frowned upon in these boards but in real life sometimes that's the circumstance that makes sense. If a mom to be doesn't have anyone offering or willing to host I wouldn't want to stop her from having a party. I guess I would just want someone to step up and offer to host it upon realizing that was the situation. Idk. I was fortunate to have 3 people host beautiful showers for me and I was so grateful. If that had not been the case we would have been fine, but moms to be deserve to be celebrated.
I'm not a huge fan of baby showers for second babies. My family has hinted that they wanted to throw one this time around and I've been against it since I *just* had one 3 years ago. I expect nothing for second baby.
@KatieEl I'm secretly throwing my own by getting my best friend and mom to do all the things I want, haha. Maybe this is more of a FFFC, but I even got my mom's Facebook login and made my own Facebook event. Do I get side-eyed or a high five for being clever?
It's just that I have really different taste than my mom and best friend so...
@caeilievalor last time my friend "hosted" mine but I managed the invites and the evite because this friend is always so difficult to get in touch with.
My UO (and FFC too I guess) is that the suburbs really creep me out. Something about the sameness and strip malls. Yikes. Sorry, not sorry. [Inspired by @madcouplewithabox (insert winky emoji)]
PS: also, what's up with so many iPhone users sending tiny texts one after another...? Just put it all in one big text! Gawd, my sister and her kids have my phone pinging and dinging all day long.
@supercoolstephy I'm with you, re: some sort of BBQ; we've been talking about throwing some sort of party at a local gaming store (which we did before our wedding, and it was SO MUCH FUN). We don't know that we will, and we don't plan to frame it as a shower if we do.
Like, my friends would throw me a shower if I asked. But I feel so awkward being given gifts, and especially if it's a framed part of an event. Also that seems like a family and close friends gig, and my family is far away, so. I just wanna hang out with people before I have a newborn and never leave the house again, lol.
About the GoT thing, i watched the whole first season with DH because he wanted to watch it because he had read the books. Well, i needed subtitles because I can't keep anyone's name straight, and I would constantly ask him who was who. I actually didn't really like it until the last episode of the first season, and then I was hooked. I'd encourage anyone who wants to get into it to watch the entire first season before giving up, and to try to watch it with someone who can help you keep the characters straight
@ollydolly I’m a little confused, do you mean subdivisions? I
live in what is technically a (AMAZING, if I do say so myself, lol) suburb of
Cincinnati, and each house is vastly different… many old, gorgeous Victorians,
Cape Cods, ranches, etc. Nothing looks the same at all. However, if it was a
subdivision where all the houses are identical I’d feel differently. On this
note, I was made to live in the suburbs and not the city!
@ everyone who does not like GoT. I love it but that is
totally not an UO. It is literally disgusting.
I don’t know where they come up with some of the stuff. I saw something (Spoiler
to future watchers: Oberyn’s death) that might be the most disgusting thing I’ve
ever seen. And the sex stuff they come up with must basically be written by a
group of men sitting around anonymously writing the most messed up/gross/not
accepted things they can think of and picking one out of a hat each week!
My UO to build on others (or FFFC): I wish someone would throw me a shower... and this is my second baby... and my first was only two years ago. I also would LOVE it if this hypothetical person would ask me to do a registry... which would be my second registry. I love parties, gifts, babies, baby things, etc. Don't hate me
I was really considering throwing ourselves a Meet the Baby party and vetoing all showers. I still wish I had, honestly.
A sip and see is more my style but I went with a shower because my SIL offered, and because some family members have horrible hand hygiene. I remember one Super Bowl my DH's 13yo nephew was heading to our kitchen but stopped to watch a play, scratched his nuts in front of God and everybody, and was going to keep hanging out. DH and the others called him out and made him wash his hands. Apparently that's something that he does all the time, genital scratch and touch everything. Plus DH and I wanted to keep the number of people around her to a minimum till her vaccination. I know everyone has their own style when it comes to vaccinating and bringing family and friends around, but we've been blessed in that my 15mo DD has only been sick once (knock on wood), so we're gonna keep on keeping on.
I feel like I have the best of both worlds. I work downtown a couple blocks off Lake Michigan and live in the suburbs. My house backs up to 80 acres of land, we have a little pond behind our house, one awesome neighbor and all the nature I need, but less than a mile from a Starbucks and lovely civilization. My commute is about 25-30 each way. I love the Midwest.
EmilyLove25 yeah, I'm really dumb these days. I meant subdivisions where all the houses look the exact same and road after road of them just keep going and going.
@egirl1025 yes to having the best of both and the Midwest! my house backs up to a couple fields and I love it, but I'm 5 min from a great grocery store, the best Thai food I've ever eaten in my life is ten min away, and the city is a 20 min drive. WAYYY better than my last house on the outskirts of the city where the park was tiny, cops drive by at regular intervals, a stabbing happened up the road and the house across from us got busted for making drugs.... twice. My friend's house 5 miles from where I used to live has been broken into twice, and their car twice (all separate incidents). I can leave my keys in the car at my place now and not have a thing to worry about if I chose.
