March 2018 Moms

Geek moms

After reading the UO thread I could tell there are a few other geek moms (I also thought red shirting was a Star Trek reference...)

Lets share our favorite fandoms, boardgames, video games, cult classics, animes, card games, table top games, larps, horror films, TV series, etc...

what do you hope to get current and future children addicted to?

Re: Geek moms

  • I'm love Star Trek, supernatural, all the anime, WoW, Phoenix Wright, D&D as well as many other tabletop games.

I run an all ladies tabletop group every wednesday night after DD is in bed. I'm hoping that I can keep it up after this baby is born.

I hope my children love tabletop and boardgames as much as I do. My husband likes Magic TG, but is more of a PC gamer.
  • Loading the player...
  • I play the The Sims a lot when my daughter is asleep.  :D I'm also a YouTube junkie. I like to watch other people play video games.

As soon as Ovia tells me baby girl can hear I'm going to start reading Harry Potter out loud.
YESSSS! I'm so sad I gave away my boxed set before my husband and I got married. I want to buy the books again so I can read them to my children. And to my husband, who apparently never got past the third book.  :o
  • @antoto and @ShawnnaO, Yass! HP is a must read! I really hope that our children get a fantasy series written while they are growing up that is just as good or better, so they can live through all the hype and excitement! Book release day was the greatest days, and then having the movies roll out and standing in line for hours with my friends.

I cant wait to relive the magic, and watch their world expand!
  • I love this.

I'm hoping both of my children love Harry Potter and Dr. Who. I'd love to use them as an excuse to go to the Harry Potter theme park. I mean, ehhh... I'd love to celebrate their 11th birthdays with Hogwarts letters and trips to the theme park. ;)

I'm also hoping they love board games as much as my husband and I do. Some of our favorite games are Takenoko, Rummikub, the Bean Game, Sheriff of Nottingham, Tichu, Red Dragon Inn, Codenames, Splendor, Love Letter, and Blokus. There are a million others in our house, of course.
  • +1 for Harry Potter...it was such a magical experience when hubs and I went to Harry Potter world on the first stop of our honeymoon! I hope to share that magic with my kids someday.
  • Harry Potter junkie over here too. I collect everything HP and have for years. I have everything from the Monster book of Monsters, all the figures in packages to a copy of the real sword. I went to London on my honeymoon and went to the HP WB Studio tour while there. It was amazing. Pottermore was so much better before they changed it around.
  • Major geek over here too! I adore HP (thinking that might actually be the nursery theme), all fantasy reads (any kingkiller chronicle fans?), DH and I run a weekly D&D group at our house which is a ton of fun, we love board games and our friends are starting a weekly board game night. @Cowboycorgi I also love supernatural and some anime as well. Your all ladies tabletop game sounds awesome!

  •  I'm such a Harry Potter nerd. I would love for my kids to love it to.
  • I'm not sure I qualify as a complete geek or nerd, but I love Harry Potter and read GoT before it was cool.  I've been getting the illustrated HPs as they are released to read to DD and future children.  We also are pretty into Catan, but moved away from our friends that we played with so make due with the app.

    @antoto What a sweet idea!  <3

  • *nerd lurking*
@GG620 there are so many cute ideas for HP nurseries! Definitely a theme that can grow with the kid too.
  • Another Harry Potter-y here!  I grew up with the books, and then the movies, and I love everything about HP. We've actually gotten to the point where we can no longer have Harry Potter Weekends on in the background while DS is awake because he's old enough to retain stuff but not yet old enough to appreciate the story, and I don't want it to be spoilery for him for when he's old enough.

Other nerd things we do: videogames. We're really into Legend of Zelda and DH and I play it together. We also like RPGs. We started to get into D&D, but it was right before we moved towns so we're just sort of experimenting with the starter set for now until we meet people who might want to play in earnest. We also play Pokémon cards. DH loves Star Wars, but I can't really get into it. Scifi is more his thing and I like fantasy and Renaissance Fairs and fairies and stuff.
  • I'm a HUGE Harry Potter nerd. Been a fan for over 20 years since the first book! we decided our announcement pic will be Star Wars themed. I already have the "that's no moon" shirt and some cute costumes for my dogs! My shower will be Gryffindor!

Im also laying in bed watching Starvate Sg1 right now if that wasn't nerdy enough for you!!
  • I have a long list of things I love to be honest. On the book side of things I love Harry Potter as well, but another favorite is the Dragons of Pern Universe. I would re-read those stories all the time.

Videogame-wise, I love Legend of Zelda, the "Tales of" series (Tales of Symphonia is one of my favorites), and Kingdom Hearts (so hyped for KH3!). I also play League of Legends, Blizzard games (not really into WoW anymore), and FFXIV.

I don't watch much american tv, that's because I usually watch Anime when I find something good. I also play tons of board games, and DND each week with work friends.

  • *Semi-Lurking from April - I hope it's ok if I join in the fun a bit... I haven't seen many nerds over in April yet....*
    @Cowboycorgi I love this thread!
MH and I are both big time nerds - we watch tons of anime and read sci-fi. We play Pathfinder/D&D, MTG and board games.
@SoraLk I love the Pern books! They were my introduction to fantasy, and even though I don't read so much fantasy any more, they will always have a home on my shelf.
@Cowboycorgi @SoraLk What are your top favorite anime series?
@HappyMonkey817 Rummikub is maybe my favorite traditional board game of all time!

  • @Hedgepig I started with Dragonsong and Dragonsinger, and just couldn't put them down after that! As for anime, I would have to say that my absolute favorite is Toradora! My fiance got me to watch it when I was in college, and I think we've watched it 4-5 times now. Some other favorites are Sailor Moon, Hellsing, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Anohana, and Erased.

  • Harry Potter! Would you consider GoT geeky? I mean, my entire family and I dressed up as the GoT characters last Halloween. It was epic.

Years ago I used to play Runescape with my little brother all the time, but haven't been on it in YEARS! That game was fun! lol

I am a huge Marvel fan. I love all Marvel comics and movies. I even named my vehicle Jarvis, hehe.

  • Minnesota hosts a Renaissance Festival every year and my mom got all of the family tickets to go. My inner geek is kinda stoked to go and see jousting and eat a giant turkey leg, lol.
  • Oh, are Ren fairs geeky, too? I do that, too.
  • @crossfitbabybump, I feel like any show/game/hobby that has you spewing random facts or makes the people around you want to sneak away quietly while you go on and on and on is considered geeky. So GoT although very main stream can be absolutely geeky just like HP. (Both of which I LOVE)

hell, I geek out about fiber arts! Crochet nerds FTW!

Renn faires are amazing! I take my corgis dressed up like fairies every year!

@hedgepig, love the name! All time favorite anime s are: Grave of the fireflies *sob!, Master of Mosquiton the Vampire, Hellsing, Cowboy Bebop, Howls Moving Castle (although the book is better), and Record of the Lodoss War. Just looking at these titles I realize that even though I love newer animes, it is the ones I watched as a teen that I consider my favorites. We had to drive 90 mins to get to the nearest store to buy VHS tapes! I still have my 6 tapes of Record of the Lodoss war because it took me so long to earn enough babysitting money to buy it.
  • @Cowboycorgi - haha I love it! I bet they look so cute!
  • @crossfitbabybump, they love all the attention and all the treats they get from everyone!
  • @Cowboycorgi - I must see these adorable pups! Did you post a picture of them in the fur baby thread??
  • I will dig one up and post it here! Does anyone else have any geekie fur baby pics?
  • I will dig one up and post it here! Does anyone else have any geekie fur baby pics?

    YAASSS!!! We'll be waiting!
  • @Cowboycorgi that pic is the best!
  • @SoraLk Toradora! is definitely in my top 4 :) The other 3, in no particular order: Bakuman, Crossgame and Yuri!! on Ice.
@Cowboycorgi I only started watching anime as an adult, so I don't know as many of the older shows, but I bet you and MH could reminisce for days!

This reminds me - we also watch K-Dramas from time to time :)

  • DW and I are very excited to raise a third-generation Trekkie, haha. My parents are both Trekkies, even went to the first ST convention, then DW and I grew up on Next Gen (and Voyager and DS9).

I grew up living on old sci-fi and fantasy books. I was such a voracious reader as a kid that by age 7 my mom had given up buying me kids books and my dad just dug up a crate of his novels from college for me. So the entire Dragonriders series was a major part of my formative years, along with some classic short sci-fi collections.

I also got into anime fairly early - back when Sailor Moon was dubbed by Dic and they were still bothering to edit the blood out of episodes of DBZ, haha. I do mostly tend to stick to the classics - 90s anime that was still cel-animated (Yu Yu Hakusho, Outlaw Star, Gundam Wing, Slayers, etc)- but I have made some attempt to check out newer stuff. Log Horizon has been really good, Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood is amazing... I'm still pretty behind, lol, I don't have as much tv-watching time as I'd like.

  • @calecorvus, I also watched those early versions of sailor moon and DBZ. Even an early version of DBZ where goku was named 'chad', lol!

I actually have 2 DBZ themed tattoos. 1 is a large thigh piece of lego versions of vegeta, Loki, and snape.
Ive only seen the original full metal alchemist, and haven't gotten around to brotherhood. Is it worth the revision?
  • It absolutely is! The original outpaced the manga, so they sort of ended up making things up as they went. Brotherhood follows the manga more closely, and I feel like it went much more in-depth with the characters, it was definitely much more heart-wrenching for me to watch (in a good way! Lots more sympathy for the characters in Brotherhood).

  • @calecorvus, Thanks for the recommendation! Guess I have something to watch this weekend!
  • Anyone else hear the heartbeat and immediately think, "I'M A TIME LORD!!!"?
  • @HappyMonkey817, lol!!! I have a scan at the end of the week and now all I'll be thinking is that I'm bigger on the inside!
It is really cool to have 2 hearts inside me
  • @nerdybookmama90 I love that library!  It warms my heart. I would love a library like that with all the built-ins.
  • Hello fellow geek moms. I need your ideas! I am going to a cosplay event next month. I was going to be Gamora from GOTG but I realized two hitches: this blump (bloat bump) is not spandex bodysuit friendly and also it is WAY too hot to paint myself green. Other ideas?! I need something my DH could pair with too.

    DD #1: 2012; MMC: 2014; DD #2: 2015; It's a boy! 3/31/2018

  • @nerdybookmama90  I am severely jealous of your library. I have not quite enough books for 3 bookshelves yet, I feel so inadequate :P
