Sleep

Does it really matter how I sleep? I heard that you aren't supposed to lie on your back. I've been trying to sleep on my left side, supposed better, and it's been tough. I borrowed my friends fancy pregnancy pillow but so far it hasn't helped much. I feel like I'm losing sleep over how I'm supposed to sleep and wonder how much it truly matters.

Re: Sleep

  • I asked my OB, who said really to sleep however I was comfortable.  I haven't been sleeping well either, if it's any consolation!

  • I think the suggestion to not sleep on your back applys later in pregnancy, when the belly pressure could (could, not will) cause issues. Sleep is the most important. Without it your symptoms can feel worse because you aren't as strong as you should be. So sleep trumps any rules to the right position.

Personally I take a small dose of unisom nightly. Usually just half a dose, but on nights I'm nauseous I'll take up to 1.5 dose (then I sleep like a ROCK). Get the tablets, not the gel. So you can break in half.
  • I was also told to sleep how is comfortable. I know for me, later in pregnancy (when it would be more of an issue) it was not comfortable to sleep on my back anymore so I naturally switched to my side.
  • With DD there was a point in pregnancy that I could no longer comfortably sleep on my back, the weight of the baby makes it impossible to breathe on your back. I don't think you need to worry about it before then.
  • I have always been a stomach sleeper. I was so careful not to fall asleep on my stomach from the beginning of my last pregnancy and I missed it so much. Now I've still been sleeping on my stomach because I can. Eventually when it gets uncomfortable I'll pull out the snoogle pillow.
My doctor has also said the same thing the PPs mentioned, just do whats comfortable. She told me that if at any point she thinks I should stop sleeping on my stomach/back she will tell me.

  • Thank you all! This is totally the real life advice I was hoping for. There are so many "supposed to's" that for a FTM it seems tough to navigate. I just wanna be comfy and now I will without guilt.
