I totally agree we do crazy things for these kids! I really am not complaining as much as it might seem based on posts here. I am willing to do whatever it takes to deliver a healthy baby. It just sucks that this happens to anybody.

I haven't had a1c tested along with this diagnosis though I may have had it tested a little over a year ago. It can't hurt to check!

@BostonBaby1 I'm adjusting. I've given myself the insulin shot 3 times now without pain after a second lesson from the diabetes teaching nurse. Fasting numbers are still elevated despite increased insulin dosage but that could be due to my evening snack choices; tonight I'm going to be very careful with carb intake and hopefully it will help. Breakfast #'s are in control with a walk. So it's nice to feel like things are improving. Hoping to make it to the middle of the 39th week for induction. I'm 33+1 today.

Eager to hear how others are doing!!!

I'm doing pretty well since starting insulin. My fasting number is lower but still not quite where it should be so I'm guessing the dr will increase my dose. All of my other numbers have been really good (with the occasional high # when I eat something I shouldn't, or don't drink enough water). Going for a growth scan the 16th to see how baby is measuring and to decide if I'll be induced early or not.

I have been really lucky so far. They dropped me down to only having to test twice a day now. Fasting and a meal. As long as my fasting stays low I will be able to continue with no insulin. My diet has been good, but I am starting to get bored with my food choices. Nst tests have been really good too. 2 more weeks until my last growth scan.

It's been a few weeks they started me on metformin, diet didn't work for me. Fasting have been always good. But post meal reading are always high, one went up to 230. 33 weeks and 1 day today.

I just updated my Dr on my blood sugar levels and she just bumped my fasting insulin up a little. No biggie.

But she mentioned "for dinner try a carb ratio of 1:10"....ok feeling stupid...but what does that mean?

@BecauseLove Umm... are you taking insulin for meals? Because 1:10 is one unit of fast acting insulin for ever 10g of carbohydrates you eat. My insulin:carb ratio is 1:5 right now

weird that she would suggest that to you if you don't do meal insulin!

Sugargirl1019 I had been doing lantus for fasting and they said initially I should do 1 unit of novolog with every 15 carbs over 60 that I did for dinner...but it was just changed to the 1:10 ratio. I did it last night for dinner (so 6 units for the 60 carbs)....I hope that is right.

I just got a call from the diabetes nurse and she chewed me out for having a few readings above the range. They are my fault because of things I ate but it was a little frustrating nonetheless. I feel like I am still learning what my body will tolerate and it is a steep leaning curve indeed.

divinemsm620 that sucks that your nurse was harsh...I don't really understand why someone would try to make someone feel bad...when it is truly a learning curve (and hopefully only a short time you are GD). I am surprised she didn't just recommend a med (or some alternative food choices) if she felt like you are needing something to keep your numbers in check. Wishing you better days on this journey!

Thanks - I know they were bad choices I made and I think the OB may say something tomorrow, but it's more her place to address the numbers than the diabetes nurse. I was just a little disappointed by the call, though numbers have been good so far today! Hope you're feeling well. Sounds like your insulin adjustments are working also!

divinemsm620 In learning we all make some bad choices...and even actually as I see good numbers I think sometimes I can get away with things that it turns out I can't. I don't think it helps for someone to berate us...I think that sort of treatment just leads people to not test or to be always anxious about things.

Yeah my updated meds seem to be working well and also realizing how off my monitor can be from one finger prick to the other has helped me not stress (like a few mins ago I tested after my lunch--which was a good choice meal) and the number was crazy higher than I would have expected (though still in range)...so I tested again and the number was 20 plus points lower.

Well-said. My dr has been much more forgiving about the numbers. But now I need to do well for the next few days to avoid mealtime insulin. She increased my bedtime dose a bit because I've been at like 96 for fasting and she wants it more in the 80s or low 90s. No more food experiments for me. I want to prove to my baby and myself that I can do this for him.

I haven't tried the two-different-fingers thing because every time I've been over it makes sense as to why. It's either bread or sweets, or in one case, both (thin crust pizza slice, followed by some ice cream - not a great choice).

Still adjusting diet and insulin, but emotions are more managed. Phew. Just scheduled induction for 9/20 at 39+4. That could change if baby measures big or diabetes is too uncontrolled. How are you??

I am still diet controlled and NST scans have been good. I am scheduled for a RCS at 39 weeks. I have a growth scan next week and am hoping all is good. Lately I have had a fear of going to early. Hope all you ladies are doing well!

Morning All! I am on insulin now for dinner and for fasting and they keep uping my doses though my numbers haven't seemed to be outside the range much if at all. I have an ultrasound next week (35 weeks) and a meeting with my dr to discuss next steps (she has been breech too so we will see if that is still the case). I have been doing weekly NST's and all is good in that hood.

My dr suggested that he won't let me go beyond 39 weeks if he can help it..so either induction or c-section at 39 weeks...or possible natural delivery before if the kiddo decides to make a move...he doesn't think because of a narrow birth canal that I can birth a breech baby so that is also in play.

Scan at 35+3 shows he's estimated 6lbs 3oz - so the 56th percentile, and amniotic fluid is in the "right" range. My doctor did say she doesn't want me going past my due date, so if he doesn't come on his own, we're looking at an induction between the 11th and 13th. She said they might start sweeping my membrane at cervical checks, to see if that helps things along without medication (induction-wise).

GD wise... my numbers have been good. I had a few a couple weeks ago that were a little too high, but they were poor food choices. But then this week, they've all been lower than expected. Which is making me a tiny bit nervous. Because in the back of my head, I can hear my OB telling me that if there's a sudden change in my sugars (eg they get better), it might mean that the placenta isn't producing the proper amount of chemicals. You know, one more thing to obsess about. I'm going to bring it up at my appt on Monday if the numbers continue to be lower than expected.

If you don't mind sharing, I'd love to know how this goes for you as I consider whether to try this myself prior to my induction (scheduled for 9/20). It sounds like things are going pretty smoothly for you--I'm guessing you may be over-thinking the low numbers. Maybe you just figured out what to do...give yourself come credit! And nice job keeping that baby at a healthy size!!!!!

I have a scan tomorrow at 34+6 and highly doubt my baby will be in the 56th percentile (he was 79th at the last scan). :-/ The OB commented yesterday while palpating my stomach that my baby certainly isn't small but she doesn't think he's ginormous either. So I am hopeful the news tomorrow won't be too bad.

@divinemsm620 Everything looks good. I am still scheduled for my RCS at 39 weeks if I don't go earlier ( you never know but it doesn't look like it right now. )

how did your scan go? I had my membranes swept twice with DS. It didn't work for me, and it's not the most comfortable thing in the world… But it does work for a lot of people. I would definitely do it again.

@jena333-2 My GD endocrinologist told me when I was at your point that numbers typically go down. It's a general lull for many GD women.

I'll let you know. At my appt last week (the 15th) I was 36 weeks, and they did my GBS swab. She did a cervix check since I was already undressed, and I was 1cm dilated and about 30% effaced. I don't think they can membrane sweep unless you're at least 1cm dilated. I don't know if we'll start on Monday (my next appt, at 36+6).

@BostonBaby1 @jena333-2 I'm happy to hear your good news and report that it seems to be good news all around! I haven't started cervix checks yet (35w today) or had the GBS swab. So we will see on that front. But my baby is doing just fine. His abdomen is big but not as many weeks ahead as last time and the MFM said he was 49th percentile overall, estimated 5 lbs 11 oz. I am very pleased and also proud that I think my insulin and food choices have finally brought my numbers into control. Three consecutive days of fasting below 95 and four days ago it was 95 exactly. My dr is on vacation this week so my next appointment is on Friday with a different OB in the practice; we'll see if he agrees with my assessment.

Also, we got terrible pictures, not worth even sending to family, but we could see baby moving a bunch and taking practice breaths. So cute. And apparently his head is super-low which explains a lot of the symptoms I've been feeling.
