So my cousin is 5 years old and knows I'm growing a baby in my belly. So over the weekend a friend of my husbands came over with his 2 year old daughter and we all went to my parents house for a family cookout. My 5 year old cousin comes in and sees our friends 2 year old daughter and goes "Oh, youre baby already came out? Is that your baby?!". It was pretty hilarious. I had to tell him no, thats our friends baby, mines still in my belly.
@livingoffpbjs That's funny! Reminded me of my DS on Saturday. We told the kids we had a surprise for them in the afternoon (we took them to the movies). They were all trying to guess what we were going to do and my 4yr old says, "I know! The baby is going to pop out!" No, hunny, it's going to be a long, long time! And it cracks me up how he says "pop out" - if only it were that easy!
@GraceUponGrace09@livingoffpbjs Children's books about new babies are not helpful in this department! The Berenstain Bears one features Papa Bear and Brother Bear going into the woods to make him a big boy bed, and when they return, baby sister is already sleeping in his old bed. In the Daniel Tiger one, Mom and Dad Tiger leave to go to the doctor to have the baby and a (very) short time later, Daniel is brought to go visit because the baby has arrived. In my head I'm like, yeah no, it's not like that haha.
Just mapped out my maternity leave schedule, I'm going to be taking 12 weeks, 8 covered and paid under FMLA and my work and 4 covered under vacation. But gah... that leaves me with 7 days from mid April through the rest of the year. Thankfully I have a lot of flexibility in my job/schedule, I can work from home and/or at night if the babe is sick. But last time DS was at the Dr 12 times for sick visits his first year of life. Most of that was because his daycare was super paranoid about everything so we had to go to the Dr a lot, we're at a new daycare now so hopefully they wont call because she has a rash in her pelvic area requiring a Drs note saying there isn't a problem. I'm really hoping that she will have a better immunity than DS and I have/had.
I have my leave calculated, like, to the minute. I can get up to 6 weeks covered by extended medical leave after my PTO runs out (within the 12 week FMLA period), so after last time I concluded there's really no point in going into my maternity leave with more than 6 weeks saved up because they'll just use it all first anyway. I have a very large spreadsheet...
@bainidhedub I'm so glad I'm not the only one who has an extensive spreadsheet for their leave and that I'm not the only person who is looking at my 2018 calendar.
Hey Friends! I am not sure where to post this question. I scrolled around and did not see a thread. I am looking for some opinions. Background: My MIL is a rather strong personality. I don't want to say we don't get along, but I often bite my tongue around her. She has also said some slights to me in the past...passive aggressive comments almost to like put me in my place or to let me know where I stand in the pecking order of the family. I think she says them in jest, but they don't always come off that way. Dispite all that, she is super excited about baby! Question: I am traveling across the country to see my family in a few weeks and my mom has decided to throw me a shower. It will be small, on a Friday afternoon, less then 20 people and all retired family members. My parents live in NY, my MIL lives in FL. My mom did not send her an invite but wanted me to say something to my MIL...which I asked DH to do and of course he did not. Having her come means she has to stay with my parents and driving her around (my parents live 45min - 1 hour away from the airport and where the shower is going to be) How big of an oopsie did I do? I have extended the invite but would it have been ok to not have invited her?
@bbeaman Your mom is hosting this shower, it's on her to invite who she thinks should come. If she just wanted to throw a party with your relatives and family friends, that's her right. Regardless of your or her relationship with your MIL, I don't think it's really fair of your mom to do this not-invited-oh-wait-she-is-invited-but-you-tell-her jazz. Also, "a few weeks" could be really short notice if you're now asking your MIL to make a trip like FL-NY. If your mom wanted her there, she should have let her know right away so she could make plans.
@bbeaman I think it's nice of your mom to invite her but not necessarily a requirement, especially since she's not local to them. I'd understand if you were having one locally, and if it was your main shower, that you would want to invite her but I wouldn't expect someone to fly across the country to give you a gift. Just mail it. haha
@bainidhedub, @TInman87 and @supercoolstephy thank you for the opinions and piece of mind. I appreciate it! You all make excellent points. I am no longer going to stress about it!
@bbeaman I would say it's absolutely fine to have not invited her. I had a little mini shower with my family and friends back home when we went for a visit. In that same trip we visited MIL in a different state and nada. I would definitely agree that a few weeks is really short notice to fly FL-NY. And if she's a strong personality like my own MIL is we put a limit on how many days in a row I can be with her, or I'll say something mean that I don't really mean. I just have little patience for her personality type, but she is a sweet lady.
My son and I caught up about his sibling's development on Saturday morning (I didn't see him for two weeks, so we had some catching up). I learned that the diagrams of pregnancy are his favorite part of the pregnancy book on the coffee table, and we talked a little bit about birth. When I assured him he wouldn't have to watch the baby being born, I said, "You and your dad will probably come visit in the hospital while I'm in labor, though."
"...wellllll, I think it would be better if we just text and maybe call once in a while."
He'd be a terrible doctor, lol.
I also had to promise that if we have a third baby, we'd tell him first when we knew I was pregnant. He found our we'd told some friends before we told him, and he says to me, "I feel like you've betrayed me." He seems mollified by the compromise that he'll be the first person to know if his sibling is a boy or girl.
Also it's my birthday on Thursday but I'm not a fun person, so IDK what to do. Maybe go to a movie? I miss beer.
Scariest moment of my LIFE happened the day before yesterday (and I'm not even exaggerating). We've been camping at the beach for the last week. We go on a bike ride every night at sunset. So, the other night, we were riding as usual. I was in front (with my sister and her husband), and DH and my mom were behind me. DH had DD in a seat on the front of his bike. We were coming down a big hill (and going pretty fast) when I heard tires skidding. I turned around to see DH (with DD on the front of his bike) crash. I seriously think my heart stopped. I dropped my bike and went running. By the time I got there, DH had picked the bike up, and DD was SCREAMING. Long story short: as DH was coming down the hill, a totally drunk, weaving woman stepped right into his path. He hit the brakes and turned his bike to avoid her, and almost did, but then the lady, again, jumped RIGHT in front of him, so he hit her. When I got there, he went to help the lady. She was a little banged up, but okay. And thankfully, DH and DD were okay too. DH put his arm under DD as they went down, so his arm and back are pretty messed up with road rash, but DD doesn't have a scratch on her. I was a wreck and even had my Dr. cousin (who was camping with us) look her over. I could NOT sleep that night though. Every time I was about to fall asleep the image of them crashing popped into my head. It was awful. Let me just say, that I am grateful for infant helmets and a husband who reacted so quickly, because that night could have ended a LOT differently! Edit: grammar
@cyanope oh. My. Goodness first off, I'm glad DD is okay!!!! I'm so glad to hear of your DHs quick response / thinking and that she had a helmet on. I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I'm glad you're all home resting safely now.
And thanks! I finally concluded we'd do something for my birthday, because for weeks I waffled. Last year I really didn't, and I ended up being mildly bummed. I'll at least get a cake, lol.
@cyanope That is so scary! I'm super impressed with your DH having the reflexes to put his arm out and so glad your DD is ok! Hope your DH heals quickly. Your camping trips have sounded so fun (minus this incident)!
Does anyone use an Erin Condren planner? I'm not one to make mine look all fancy pantsy but I am currently going page by page through etsy looking for the perfect stickers for my planner. I had a set last time that I didn't LOVE so I want one that has like one million ultrasound apts listed since I'll have them once a month for the next few months. hah
@cyanope that is so scary and I am so sorry you had to go through that. Your story made me start crying on my way to work. Your DH sounds amazing to think so quickly!! So happy that everyone came out in one piece.
@supercoolstephy I have one and love making it pretty, but I won't spend the big bucks for it next year. I have gotten mostly Create 365 stickers from Michael's, and they also make the MAMBI planner which the stickers actually fit in and are only like $20.

@scatteringashes What pregnancy book do you have? My 5yo is obsessed at looking at pictures of what baby looks like in the womb right now, its so cute. I was hoping to find him a book about fetal development but, you know, like elementary school level. Not sure that exists!
I just found out that Publix will deliver to my office and I could seriously cry happy tears right now. There are so many days I want a sub from their deli but really don't feel like driving over and now I don't have to.
My mom gave us this book called Our New Baby....It has been great for pregnancy because it has alot of messages about how mommy has cravings and is really tired, lol.
@cyanope so glad everyone is safe. SO glad you have a fast-thinking DH. That sounded terrifying. That woman deserves a smack across the face. Get as drunk as you want, but don't endanger others.
I need hair help. My hair has decided to be wavy. In the last two weeks. I have never had the slightest bit of texture in my hair ever in my life before. I have no idea how to take care of it, and I swear to god, I'm going to be a white girl with dreadlocks if I don't figure it out. I'm sitting at my desk just finger combing out IMMENSE knots and I have like 200 more to go. I always thought I wanted curly hair, but now I'm pretty sure I'm doin' it rong.
@supercoolstephy my SIL has an instagram account dedicated to her planning, caligraphy and stickers galore. She has a lot of sticker discounts to shops etc, too. Let me know if you want to check out her account.
@cyanope omg that is so scary! So glad everyone is okay; sounds like DH is a total rockstar!
@supercoolstephy I have an EC planner, and make it look nice, but it's more functional that super duper decorated. My 2018 planner actually just shipped yesterday and I'm so pumped to get it!

@missblaze@bainidhedub@KatieEl I'm not a super decorator. I wish I was but I just can't do it without it looking like a 12 year old did it. haha Mine is mostly functional.
@KatieEl I need to order my 2018 planner. I haven't even looked yet. I have a credit to use too.
@jakobaby yes send it my way. I love planner inspiration cause mine looks like a child did it.
@auntieraindrop welcome to my life! So here's what you need to know about wavy hair: when you towel dry your hair, don't rub it, it causes your hair to get more frizzy, just plop it up in a turban for a bit. Also, avoid blow drying if possible because that will also cause frizz. You can use a brush, but only use it when your hair is wet, not when it's dry. There's a great product, Garnier Sleek and shine, that will slip cut back on frizz/tangles. Just put about a dime sized dollop in while it's damp. Honestly, it's a pain in the butt, but air drying your hair will let you see how it works and keep the heat damage frizz to a minimum. I also like to wind up my hair in large chunks (don't know if that makes sense) you kinda twirl big chunks to control the frizz and create some big loose curls and let it air dry.

THANK YOU. I think I may have identified the problem just from this paragraph. When my hair was all straight, I waited for it to dry before brushing, because it would spring back and re-knot if I brushed it wet, but now I am having zero success with dry brushing because it's just like, the texture of carpet by then. I will try it while it's still wet. And check out the Garnier. Any conditioner recommendations? I feel like my requirements probably have changed.
It is also waist length and I think I may have to put it up more often, I normally wear it down.
They have another one called "It's Not the Stork," which I haven't read but sounds like it might be geared a bit younger while staying in the same tone.
Here's a random one for you ladies! I know it's early, but are you guys still going all out for Christmas this year? I guess this is more of a FTM question, because with other little ones in the house you can't really take a year off. We are due January 1ish and DH is already saying we should skip Christmas this year, all of it, and it makes me want to cry. The furthest we have to travel is an hour, which I feel is doable but he is already telling his family and mine that we might not come this year...hello...I can sit at someone else's house as easily as I can mine.... Then there's the decorating question...do I struggle in my 8 month pregnancy mess to put up a tree only knowing I will be taking it down either 9 months pregnant OR postpartum?!?
I'd do it if you feel up to it when the time comes. My mom has said that when she was pregnant with me (oldest, Jan. 7) instead of nesting she just wanted to sit and look at the decorated Christmas tree.
