TTC After a Loss

Blood testing?

I am mostly a lurker here but I am hoping to get some input. I had an MC in January and another one this past Thursday. I called the nurse today to talk about if I needed to come in and she spoke with a doctor for me. She said that I could come in for blood testing to see if there was an underlying issue. What do you think they would test for?

I had one missed MC and then had one healthy pregnancy. And now two MCs. Part of me says to just try again because it seems like a lot of women go through testing and do not come out with answers.

First off, welcome and I'm sorry for your losses.  I haven't personally had any testing done so I don't know what all they do testing for, but two friends have had testing done and been determined to have clotting disorders that led to their MCs.  So that's at least one thing.

@chaser61 I'm sorry for your losses. I would strongly recommend the testing with three miscarriages. It's just bloodwork -- not too invasive -- but could reveal why your losses are happening. It could be something simple, like low progesterone or a thyroid problem, that is easily treated with medicine, and you would be all set for future pregnancies. Good luck.

  • I've had RPL testing done. Different REs test for different things. However, most insurances cover this after several losses so check into that. There are a TON of blood tests that they did and ours didn't reveal anything, but I agree with @adirat that I'd do them if you can because my main goal was to make sure there was no simple problem to 'fix' which is what most of the bloodwork would show. If you do the bloodwork and it all comes back fine, then you can decide from there. But I didn't want to continue to have MC after MC to find out there was a simplistic solution.

  • Thanks all. I made an appointment for Monday already. I think I was in shock that it was suggested that I might have an issue and I should get testing done. Or maybe I was still in disbelief that I had another MC.
  • I went in for bloodwork after my 2nd miscarraige in 4 mos. We checked thyroid, hormone levels, vitamin d, genetic test for mthfr & a general bloodpanel to see if any anomalies presented in my baseline numbers. I ultimately showed a low vitamin d & also a single gene mthfr mutation. The mutation causes folic acid to create a toxicity in the body because the liver can't break it down. I am glad that i did the testing; as standard practice is to pump an expectant mamma full of folic acid & in my case that is the wrong suppliment to use. I have yet to concieve again since addressing the issues my labwork uncovered, but i am hopeful that I will finally be able to have the child my husband & I are longing for.
