Baby Names

Russian American Parents

My husband is American and I am Russian. We are expecting a boy. I would like to give a baby a Russian name that has English equivalent but I am not sure how weird those names would sound to an American ear (my husband likes these names but he is a little biased.

I really like the following Russian names, English name in parentheses: Matvey (Matthew), Timofey (Timothy), Anton (Anthony). How do those names sound to you?

Re: Russian American Parents

  • I love Anton it's one of my favorite names! I also think it's works well. Timofey probably would be my second of those listed.

    I would also suggest

    Ivan
    Viktor
    Nikolai
    Dimitri

  • I think Anton would be the less confusing, but if he ends up going by Mat or Tim then the other two aren't that confusing either. I do like Anton the best.
  • I like Anton the best. While Timofey isn't hard to pronounce, it sounds like a speech impediment or a child-like mispronunciation. He may have some difficulties/bullying with the name. Anton is used by some Americans as well.

I also second pp names as being easy to pronounce/use by Americans.

I like Anton best for reasons stated above.
  • Love Anton........But especially LOVE Boris.

  • Anton and Timofey.
  • Like Anton but LOVE Matvey.. I realize I seem alone but I love it! Also like suggestion of Nikolai and Dimitri. What about Roman?
  • Another vote for Anton!

Hey, we had the same problem!

I'd steer clear of the -ey ending names because English people pronounce them without softening the consonant that comes before, and it sounds really weird. If it doesn't bother your ear, disregard that.

My favourites are Nikolai (our final pick) and Nikita, but I also love Dimitri, Constantine, and Alexander.

No. It really doesn't. It does, however, sound like Tina Fey with an M. Do with that as you see fit. :joy:
