Randoms Week of 7/24

Re: Randoms Week of 7/24

  • @burnsmommy27 It's called "lotus birth." My understanding of it is that people who practice feel that it's more reverent to the placenta. The people I read who practiced it cited that the cells of the placenta and baby don't separate until 9 days past conception, and thus felt the placenta itself deserved honor.

I haven't read about it in years, and I don't know a ton about it. Not my sort of thing.
  • Loading the player...
  • Hmmm interesting. Yeah not my kind of thing either @scatteringashes. I can only imagine what it smells like. I remember my PP bleeding last time was pretty stinky. I wouldn't want that attached to my baby.

Plus it seems like once the placenta is out it isn't functioning, so not really helping the baby anymore
  • I just heard about lotus births too! Super interesting, but definitely NMS.
  • I feel like that's one of those "good for her not for me" things....

Together Let Us Seek the Heights

  • Speaking of births and smells... my husband just finished doing his clinical hours at the labor and delivery dept. and he comes home telling me all the disgusting details on c sections and the smell of the flesh :| I DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT! I get so queasy talking about blood and guts! And then he has the nerve to say he feels for me when I complain about my c section scar because he now knows how invasive they are.
  • ...oh this is not going to be a fun conversation. My mom is a smoker. Me nor DH (or anyone else immediate family) is. Each time she comes to visit she stays in our spare room and when she leaves we air the room out for a few days because regardless of her not smoking in the house the smell lingers from her and her clothes. Well the spare room will soon be the baby's room and she's coming to visit for 2 months. Baby will start out in our room with us until he (and I) are ready to have him in his crib. She has decided to look for a small bed she can put in the nursery and stay in his room... She gets really butthurt when I mention the smell (ever) and she's already upset that I've told her I don't want her in the delivery room.
Do I just suck it up and air out the nursery as soon as she leaves? Do I just not put anything in there until baby is going in there (long after she leaves). Ugh ;(
  • @BrandedCowgirl92 I feel your pain. I have similar issues with MIL, and since they live in Germany, they will visit for long periods of time and I'm not sure how to handle the thirdhand smoke. I don't want her to feel bad or isolated. I think you mean that your mom is staying there before LO arrives, and then LO won't move into the room until whenever you are ready? What would be your best guess about when you'd move him in his crib? It's a tough decision...
  • @BrandedCowgirl92 that's a tough situation. One thing I would be concerned about is that if she's leaving a smell in the room when she leaves, then the smell is clinging to her clothes. Are you going to want your newborn pressed up against that and breathing it in when she's cuddling them? It's going to be hard, but I think you're going to have to set some hard boundaries about the smoking and being around baby. DH needs to be on board with you too or it won't help. Things like washing hands every time she comes in from a smoke, changing into a specific shirt when she goes out to smoke and changing back into a smoke free one when she gets back. My grandma smoked from age 12 on, so I never knew her when she didn't smoke, but she made it a point to only smoke outside and would make sure to blow the smoke far enough out that it clung to her clothes less. I don't remember her house ever smelling like smoke and her clothes only smelled occasionally. Good luck.
  • @BrandedCowgirl92 I feel for you! DH's parents are both heavy smokers. Its terrible. Even worse they arent careful about the smoking and babies. DH's brother has a baby and I was horrified when we visited his parents house. His Mom would go outside and smoke, come in, sit down (didnt wash her hands) and then his brother brought the baby to her and handed her over..... it gets worse...... she starts playing with the baby and starts sticking her fingers in the baby's mouth! DH and I are ready to set ground rules but I know its going to be even worse since his siblings dont enforce any rules about their kids and her smoking. But sorry lady, my baby, my rules (well our baby, our rules, but you know)

  • @BrandedCowgirl92 I have this issue as well with mine and DH's family. We had to set really firm boundaries with our parents about no smoking before coming over. It was tough but it's best for the baby. My mom would bring an extra clean shirt to put on when she wanted to hold our son. His aunt lives nearby and we still refuse to go over there because they smoke in the house and it reeks so bad. If she wants to see our son she has to come to our house.
  • @EmilyLove25 elective scheduled for this Sunday...of all days! Excited to see the squish.
  • Thank you ladies for feeling my pain, I know my mom smoked shortly after I was born (and the first part of her pregnancy because she didn't know for a long time that she was) so hrr argument will be I turned out fine. Ugh. But mentioning a clean shirt... I have a heat press so maybe I'll make her some new shirts that day nana and stuff on them so at very least its not clothing she's worn 24/7 while smoking and I think I'm going to just require everyone to wash hands before holding baby each time. DH and I decided last night we just won't set up the baby's room until she's left; the wooden crib will be in there but all else will go in our room (we have a decent sized room so shouldn't be an issue). UNLESS of course we magucally buy the house we really want down the street which has 4 bedrooms which would mean still having a spare room.... if only, if only.
  • @BrandedCowgirl92 I hate that argument. My mom smoked while pregnant and it had awful effects on my little sister. She was born at 37 weeks and was less than 4lbs. She was a very sickly child.

  • @BrandedCowgirl92 UGH! I hate that argument. I have heard the exact same thing "you turned out okay". But, my mom smoked when I was growing up (only in the "study", but still) and I had lung issues that have plagued me my whole life. I get pneumonia or bronchitis at the drop of a hat, as does my sister. And same argument from DH's parents...they know secondhand smoke is bad, but look at me like I am INSANE if I mention thirdhand smoke. They're like, "DH is fine". And I think to myself, he has been on blood pressure medication since he was 16, and he's otherwise completely healthy...yes, it is genetic in your family, but gene by environment interactions, people!!!! It probably exacerbated the problem his whole life.

A suggestion I read - encourage handwashing up to elbows, which can help a bit if someone is wearing 3/4 length or shorter sleeves. And have her put her worn clothes in a separate hamper so smoke doesn't find it's way into carpet - should be easy enough to sneak that in!

So glad and DH are on the same page. DH supports me but it is SO tough that it is his mom, who will literally see her grandchild twice a year for two weeks at a time bc of distance. We all feel awful about it...I feel for you.
  • I think PPs brought up some good suggestions regarding the smoke. As for me, having some friends over tonight  to finish up watching the show Big Little Lies, pretty excited!
  • My mom was a 3 pack a day smoker when she found out she was pregnant with me, she cut down to like 3 a day and switched to filters (at that point the dr said quitting cold turkey would have been worse for me and her) she ramped back up after she had me but hated it and tried to quit most of my childhood. She finally did when I was 13 and has told me time after time she would kick my booty if she found out I started to smoke. Thankfully all our extended family except DH's grandpa either didn't smoke or quit a long time ago.

  • Best thing that happened to me this week so far is (sadly) this Dole Whip recipe. Tastes like Disney World!

But holy cow, it was amazing and so easy! Didn't add the honey/sugar if anyone wants to try.
  • @GraceUponGrace09 That gif is totally going to be me and my crew when I'm an older lady lol

  • @GraceUponGrace09 haha I love seeing the new months pop up!

  • @agalvarado Ha ha, reminds me of this...
  • gusgus14  How are you liking the Snoogle? My mom bought me one and I should get it tomorrow...

    EDD: 1/25/18

  • @GraceUponGrace09 LOL YES! Except my recipe used mini marshmallows but that's what it looked like!!!
  • @slipaustin - I haven't gotten it yet! It should get here today. For now I've just been using one of our shams. If I knew they were going to take so long to process and ship, I would have just gotten off my butt and gone to the store.
  • @EmilyLove25, DH and I had a queen for the first five years of our marriage. I don't know how we did it, honestly. Now that we have a king, I can't even fathom going back. Sleeping on an queen-sized air mattress during our camping trip last week was almost the death of our relationship...
  • Hahahah @agalvarado I love how specific your dream was with the blowtorch.

We still have a queen bed. I've been rallying for a king but DH decided to spend money from savings going on Phish tour...
  • My office shares a wall with the NICU. I've had this job for 7 months and have never heard a baby, well there is a little guy in there screaming today. Makes me so sad they are in there. Que the hormones
  • @RC1014 LOL exactly! I think I was on a cooking show because I kept explaining to a woman next to me all the steps  :D
  • Y'all, we sleep on full-size bed -- it works for us. The last time we shared a king-sized bed it, we were bewildered by the amount of space*. My ex and I had a king, and it was nice for cosleeping when my son was little.

(* We were drunk at a hotel and in the middle of the night we declared it Bed Island. But it was a nice hotel and it was the first time I think we realized we were both in this for real -- so its a fond memory.)
  • Guys. We sleep in a queen size bed and DH is a bed hog. I can't wait to get this big ol' belly in his way and take it over soon. When I was pregnant with DS he snored soooooooooooooo bad and this time he has a cpap machine so other than the bed hogging he doesn't bother me much yet. Other than when he comes into bed hours after I do and thinks he's getting some... because he's not.

  • DH and I had a MASSIVE fight last night, and I'm going to stick with my MO of not forgiving him anytime soon. It basically comes down to something as childish as him telling me he watched porn (and did everything that goes along with it) and me getting angry... but needless to say he implied he's been doing it "a lot" lately. In a way, have at it man, because you have annoyed me lately and also I'm just not feeling it...  but for the love of god, why would you tell your pregnant wife you were doing that?!?!?! He KNOWS it makes me feel unattractive etc (irrationally, but he knows it), so wth. OMG I was livid last night, y'all. I really hope he likes those women and his hand because it's going to be a while before I forget last night.

@RC1014  lol to your DH’s use of savings. I sort of admire his loyalty to Phish but hope you get that King!

@auntieraindrop  YAY for the good BP reading!

@burnsmommy27  Aww poor baby… at least we know he is getting help!

  • Oh man upgrading to a king bed has been one of the best things we've ever done! We did it to have more room for our two dogs to sleep with us but turns out it doesn't matter how big the bed is, they will sleep right on top of both of us and Barley likes to sleep under the covers basically glued to your side. Since I started having trouble sleeping just a few weeks into pregnancy, they've been sleeping in their crates and it's so nice to have so much space! I don't take up much room when I sleep but I don't like having someone close to me because I feel like I need room for my body to breathe and of course now there's plenty of room for my snoogle.
