Breech Babe

Hi mamas,
we found out the other day that our little girl is breech at 37 weeks. At first, I wasnt concerned because I figured there was still plenty of time for her to flip, but when I met with doctors later that day, they told me to start making the decison to have either an aversion (where they manually flip the baby) or schedule a c section. Obviously I started leaning towards c section because I know so many of my friends that have had them and were happy with the decision. But my doctor seems to be set on the aversion, which I hear is brutal and the chances of it even working are a very low percentage. Has anyone had one or have any advice?! Thanks!

  • Versions can go either way, and unfortunately I personally don't have experience with them.  My cousin just had one for her daughter, said it was painless and the baby stayed head down.  A friend had one done, her son flipped back, and she ended up with a c-section anyways.  Unfortunately, everyone has a difference experience with them, so it is totally up to you and your doctor what you decide to do.  Sorry I can't give you any more advice.

  • Spinningbabies.com has some techiniques you can try without doing a manual version. I would try those first if my baby was breech.

Otherwise, I would say I hope for the best decision for you.

  • I had an ECV with DD and, while it was uncomfortable, it didn't hurt.  She wouldn't flip and I ended up with a c-section, but I'm glad I tried the ECV first.
  • Please get a second opinion about the version! My first OB was all about it, and I went for a second opinion and that doctor said I wasn't a candidate because he was using the placenta as a pillow! I didn't so much care about the pain of the version, but I didn't want an emergency c section at only 37 weeks. Versions have about a 50% success rate.
I scheduled a 39 + 6 c section with the hope that he still had time to flip. They will let you cancel it that same day if baby has flipped by then, so there is no real downside to booking your slot so you get the day and doctor you prefer.
The new ob with whom I booked the c/s thought there was no way he was flipping with his position and my fluid level, and he didn't. He was born with his legs straight up by his face!

*June lurker* I don't know where you got your statistics, but they are wrong.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says the success rate is more than half, and the American Academy of Family Physicians says it's 65%. https://m.acog.org/Patients/FAQs/If-Your-Baby-Is-Breech?IsMobileSet=true#successful

I also wouldn't describe it as "brutal" based on what my friends who've had them have told me. Uncomfortable? Yes. Will you be sore afterwards? Yes. But everyone I know who's had one was happy they did so and went on to successfully have a vaginal birth.
