Working moms:
How long of a maternity leave are you planning to take? Will you get any paid leave? Are you planning to return to work after baby? I told my boss today where she didn't hear it through the grapevine after we announced to our friends and family last night, so it has me thinking about leave options.
Re: Maternity Leave?
If we can afford it, I will have 8 weeks. It will be the shortest leave of all my kids, and I'm incredibly sad about it. I just switched districts last year, so I have hardly any sick/personal leave available. The time I had with my babies in the first few months is time I never get back, and I keep trying to figure out a way for us to afford for me to have even one more week at home with our last little one. Any ideas??

@LiveNLove44 my sister is now staying at home while she's finishing up PA school. I asked her how she does it with just her SO working. She said they cancelled everything, like cable, Netflix, etc... unnecessary things and she budgets their monthly grocery list. She said it was tight at first but once they got the hang of it, things got easier. Try looking at all of your bills and see what you can and can't live without. A little extra cash a month can go a long way!
@LiveNLove44 I'm not sure what line of work you're in, but do you have the option to do any work from home part time to supplement your income? I did that at my last job (in medical billing at the time) toward the end of my maternity leave.
@crossfitbabybump - I'm in the same boat as you - I have amazing insurance and going on my DH's is basically us taking a pay cut. However - we wouldn't be grossing enough paying for daycare and me working full time to make it worth it for me. I'd rather cut our budget somewhere else than go back to work.
I haven't told my boss yet - just waiting for my ultrasound tomorrow.
@crossfitbabybump Maternity leave and FMLA are different things. I recommend following up with your HR to make sure they are not screwing you.

I actually am going to a district wide presentation about maternity leave on the 1st so that will be interesting.
So my work must just have FMLA then and it's paid at 70% because they keep using the term FMLA. Thanks!
I will follow up with them because I know they've said up to 8 weeks for regular delivery and up to 12 for C-section. But we don't have to take the full time, although I don't know anyone who wouldn't?
So...with DS I got a year of paid maternity leave. Then I put in my notice and am now a SAHM. I work casually so I'll take a year after this baby before picking up more shifts probably.
You're about to hate me more. Because I'm not taking any maternity leave this time, DH can use paternity leave. Our plan is for him to stay home for the first 1-3 months. We haven't decided for sure how long. I think he can take up to 6 months paid.
I really feel for you mamas. I hate that my American friends don't get more maternity leave. It's so sad to me.
@antoto I had DD at the end of August and took off the full 12 weeks, so did not start the school year. It actually went better than I expected and my students liked me more than my sub - so that's a win. (I was seriously worried they'd rebel against me.) What subject do you teach - are long term subs easy to find in your area? The biggest stress for me was that my district didn't find my sub until the week before school started - it looks like there may be a math teacher shortage...

If we can save enough my H might take a couple weeks off after the birth
EDIT: I'll also have the option for some OT between now and then to hopefully get a little more put away, and DH and I will be sure to get our taxes done nice and early so we'll have the refund to cushion us too!

You guys have to find your own long term sub?! That's so strange. I had DD at the end of August, so I didn't start the school year either, @becausescience. I thought it would be horrible because I'd have to re-introduce expectations, routines, etc., but it went better than I anticipated. This time around, I'm happy to have so much of my year with them before I go, but it's over testing time and our district is pretty serious about student performance. I hope I set them up for success before I go!
In my case, I'll have 12 weeks unpaid with FMLA, but my state also gives 12 weeks, with 6 weeks of "pregnancy" leave. Part of it runs concurrently with FMLA, so I'll basically have 18 weeks in total (all unpaid) assuming a normal delivery. My employer also requires us to use all sick time when going on leave, so I'll probably have about 2 weeks (at most, assuming I don't actually get sick before my due date) saved up by that point.
I'm so sorry to all of you mama's in the US that must go back to work so soon. I can't imagine how difficult that must be for you.
I also agreed I feel for your other mamas I truly wish you could have more time at home without fear of losing jobs and all the comes with taking more time with your baby
