Re: Baby Travel

  • We are planning on a trip to California mid November. I'm due the end of September so baby could be anywhere from just over a month to about two months. We'll be flying and staying in a hotel for about 5 days. Fortunately, my in-laws are also going so I've booked the same flight as them (DH won't be flying there with us as he'll already be there for work) and I imagine grandma will spend a lot of time doting on baby and giving me a break.

    **TW**
    Me & DH: 32
    Married 2013
    Kiddo #1: Sept 2015
    BFP: 1/19, EDD: 9/30

"I'm having fruit salad for dinner. Well, it's mostly just grapes, actually. Ok all grapes. Fermented grapes. Fine, I'm having wine for dinner."
  • We will be heading to Napa in November when baby is about two months old. It's a 6-7 hour car ride for us, so it's not too much of an adventure, but it may turn in to one with an infant and a 3 year old. But, we frequently travel to see family since our closest family is 6+ hours away from us, so Baby Girl will have to get used to long car rides at some point.

  • wannabeamongoose is your husband going to be there for awhile before you arrive? Nice that you will have travel companions to help hold her or just to help with luggage. Are you planning anything special regarding immunizations before travel? Are you planning on buying anything special to be used during your travel?

I am also due at the end of Sept (depending on my GD)....we are talking about going on a family trip in January to Mexico (to our time share...and a place we have been numerous times). So baby will have 1st and maybe 2nd shots depending on when she is born. We will also be traveling with family so it should make the travel part easier for hauling luggage and holding baby...thankfully we were kinda minimalist packers before she came along so if we add a suitcase of just her stuff we will still only have 2 suitcases. I guess we will see as we get closer but my husband is much more sold on the idea of baby wearing rather than bringing a stroller for her. We have also had to talk through car seat things as we are often prone to take public buses but will likely need to take taxis more often (and more of them because our group would be roughly 8 of us including babies. We will buy more of the uv swimsuits so not having to worry so much about sunscreen (which they can't use at that age but of course keeping baby out of the sun) and we already have a co sleeper we will bring along...etc. We will also have to get her passport asap after she is born.

  • We were thinking about taking a little trip to Amish country for our first anniversary... he will be about 8 weeks old. We thought it would be a nice slow pace with a new born and It's only about a 4 hour drive. We are planning to drive early morning so that he will hopefully be sleepy again by night time. I think we will stay 3-4 days.
  • We are planning to possibly visit family up in Michigan shortly after LO is born and then a family vacation in the summer.
  • It is super easy to travel with them when they are really young. DD's first flight, she was 3 months old and slept all the time. It is much harder now that she is 15 months and really, really curious.
  • CoastalMomma Napa sounds like a wonderful retreat! I grew up having to do a 5 hour drive 1 way to see extended family...kids today don't even know how lucky they are to have all the do hickies to entertain them (maybe lucky parents too)...I had my dad listening to oldies on the radio and sleep as options for entertainment lol.

sarahufl We will have my newborn with and another families 14 month old with so it will be very interesting to see the differences. We did a trip with the other families kiddo when there kid was 6 months and it was pretty easy...though we didn't do much adventuring just ohhing and awwing over the baby and relaxing.

  • @becauselove Yah. His parent company is in Carlsbad (we're vacationing in La Jolla) so he's going to schedule a business trip so that his company will cover his flights and a rental car. That way we only have to buy tickets for me an DS. We're not planning anything special re: immunizations. We're on the regular schedule and we are aware that if baby comes late we will have virtually no immunizations due to age, but there's also the chance that baby will come early in which case we might be able to get the 2 month shots before we go. We figure we'll cross that bridge when we get to it and if we need to cancel we'll cancel. And I won't hesitate to take baby to the urgent care or ER while on vacation if anything seems off.

  • @BecauseLove as an avid baby wearer (dh is too now that the bump is being problimatic to wrap around) traveling with a stroller is invaluable when the carseat can click right in. Baby fell asleep while in the car? Just pop the car seat in a stroller frame. Baby has a ton of stuff to cart around? Stroller basket it perfect. No changing table at the destination? Just lay the bed of the stroller flat and viola! Changing station. When we are going to be out for a long time I usually take the stroller too.

We plan on taking a trip to N Georgia to my in laws cabin (we live in FL) around October, so baby will be about 4-6 weeks. Provided she is doing well and having no issues. My 2 year old will probably be tougher to travel with unfortunately. Poor guy.
  • @BecauseLove, I'm looking forward to it. My mom is hosting Thanksgiving at a timeshare she owns there. I figured it would be a good opportunity for extended family to meet baby. Agreed there is so much more entertainment on the long drives now available. Usually though we just exhaust DS in the morning and drive in the afternoon/evening so he sleeps for at least 2 of the 6 hours. DH or myself generally sits in back with him when he is awake so we can read to him/keep him entertained. But we will not have the space to do so when baby arrives.
  • My brother and his fiancé moved their wedding from 8/13 to 10/13 so that we could attend and be involved. So we'll be flying with baby when he/she is 3-5 weeks old. Definitely will be wearing baby to keep him/her close. DH is paranoid about babies ears with flying but it really shouldn't be an issue. And otherwise the only option with DS' distaste for the car seat is a two day train ride. No thank you.
  • Baby and I will be flying to Switzerland when she's 2.5 months old, it's about a 14 trip. We will spend 3 months there and then come home for a month and then go back indefinitely!

We will apply for her passport as soon as we can and head that way once we get it!

  • I will be traveling for Thanksgiving and Christmas. For Thanksgiving LO will be maybe 2.5 months depending on when she is born. I'm hoping she is a good flyer like my 1st. Start em young. DD1 had her 1st flight at 2 months so similar age for this baby.

My best advice for protecting those little ears is to feed baby (or give baby a binky). The sucking helps to open the passages in the same way that yawning or chewing gum does for us grown ups. Plus it's a natural sedative so baby will be able to doze after a nice feed. We've never ever had a problem with kiddo having issues with ear pressure.

  • That is awesome that so many people are getting in adventures with their kiddos! Anyone buying anything special for the trip or travel with baby?

khenry12  you make a great point about the stroller...we will have the one that the car seat snaps into.

If anyone has a older baby traveling they have some cool ear plug things you can put in their ears that have tubes that prevent their ears from having issues with the up and down of pressure during travel.

coolwhipz1  That sounds like an awesome adventure! We will also be applying for a passport right away. Have you spent time in Switzerland before? We vacationed there for a few days a few years ago and LOVED the Luzern (Weggis) area. It was so breathtakingly beautiful and small which we loved.

Carebella So glad your going to be able to attend the wedding now!! :)

Yes! My boyfriend lives in Switzerland, baby and I will be moving there shortly after she's born. We've been long distance for the last year and a half. Currently we are both working and saving money, I've slowly started selling off all my household stuff in preparation for the move. We'll live in Zurich but we will spend a lot of time in the French part where his family is. It's a gorgeous country, we're excited!

  • We're going to the Smokies with my in-laws in mid-October. Baby could be anywhere from 6-8 weeks at that point. We also have a 2.5 year old. I'm not super pumped about it, honestly, but it's only about a 3.5 hour drive, so it's not the trip itself I'm not excited about. I just don't like giving up time away from my maternity leave at home. I'm only taking 9-10 weeks, and mid-October will be nearing the end of my time and I know I'm going to want to be soaking up as much time with baby as possible. I'm probably being a fuddy-dud lol.
  • We will probably do some traveling fairly locally for the holidays, but may go to Ohio in the late spring. I would like to get a trip in while the baby is small, because of the cost of an additional seat and so that it is out of the way.

For older kid's ears, we give him a straw cup with water during take off and landing.
