Dental surgery during pregnancy?

My dentist wants me to get all 4 wisdom teeth removed, I'm not keen on this at all- and I'll be asking my doctor at my next appointment her thoughts- however the dentist said it's fine even though I'll be completely unconscious during the procedure. Also not keen on the thought of recovery with a toddler and pregnant.

Have any stm had to have major dental surgery during pregnancy? What is your experience?

Re: Dental surgery during pregnancy?

  • I had a root canal with my second. This time around though I have a new dentist and she won't do a tiny filling. Both were approved by my Obgyn.

  • Yikes, I really had a tough time with my wisdom teeth but I was not pregnant. If it seems like a simple removal (not impacted) then it might be better to get it over with now before you have a baby And a toddler to care for?
id also ask your OB if it's safe to do while pregnant.

  • I had all 4 out in very early pregnancy. Honestly you might as well get it over with. I got mine done right before the weekend so my husband was home to take care of our 1 year old. Recovery wasn't really that bad either. I was back to work in a few days.
  • I didn't get mine out pregnant, but I would choose that (if it's safe of course) over doing it with a newborn or a baby who is nursing every 3 hours. That recovery sounds no fun. Toddlers are more distractable.

  • I have the same issue! I have known that mine need to come out for a while but have been putting it off (stupid, I know). I need to go to the dentist but am scared of what they will say because I don't know how comfortable I am with having major work done while pregnant. That said, I know people who have had appendixes out whilst pregnant so I know it is safe (if not ideal). It is the recovery with my fifteen month old that I stress about also. I do know that infection whilst pregnant can be dangerous - potentially more so than any anesthetic. So I think that ultimately should be the driver.

Same boat here. I am actually going to the dentist next week for work I have put off for far too long. Personally I'd rather deal with the recovery while I only have 1 kid vs 2. Plus, technically it'll be cheaper since I can't go crazy on the pain meds! Gotta tap into that super mom strength.

Also, I had my wisdom teeth out when my first was a month old. I had to rely a ton on my husband because I didn't want to be alone with my daughter while on pain meds. I basically tapped out of being a parents for 2 days.

True, I guess I didn't think about the whole- I'll have a second kid to look after later thing. I'm dreading it. They are impacted.  :s
