What's your limit?

What's your limit on travel time/distance?

Like... how far are you comfortable for? What helps? What makes it worse?

We have alot of travel planned for the next 2 weeks and I typically don't travel while pregnant (just because I stay so busy at work) so I need some pointers....

Re: What's your limit?

  • Are you talking about driving or flying? For flying I think there are recommendations for flying in pregnancy but for driving I don't really have any limits. I could drive for days off I had to, even in third trimester, it had never bothered me

  • I plan on driving 5 hours in November to my MILs for thanksgiving and my OB said it was fine.  Lots of potty/stretching breaks and you should be fine.
  • No limits at this stage, once you hit 3rd trimester, that changes but like PP said lots of restroom breaks and stretching. If you feel uncomfortable, stop and stretch. Stay hydrated as well.
  • When I was pregnant with DS I traveled to Tokyo and Hong Kong on separate business trips during the second trimester.  14 hour plane rides are never fun, but it wasn't too bad.  (I avoided traveling anywhere without a solid medical infrastructure in case there were any complications.)

For car travel, we drove 10 hours to Florida and back for Thanksgiving.  Just a few more potty breaks than normal, that was about it.

Just did a 5 hour drive to NY (normally 4ish but traffic and potty breaks lol), and it wasn't bad at all. I don't have plans to fly anywhere now, as we'd just gotten back from Hawaii when we got BFP, and now I want to hoard my PTO hours for maternity leave next year. Our next trip is another drive back up to NY for a wedding in a couple months, so we'll see how I feel then!

If they're road trips, just plan for plenty of potty breaks! You don't know when that next rest stop will be, so just go when you can!
  • I'm currently RV travelling on an almost 2 week trip. We have already driven through 4 states, so a lot of driving. I don't think there is a problem unless you are uncomfortable with it, or are feeling sick. Last time, when I was after 36 weeks the furthest I went was an hour and a half to my sister's house.
  • We have a trip to Europe planned for next month. The Dr. said it was fine, but to be that person that gets up and walks around every hour to prevent blood clots.
  • We are driving 10hours to my family for Thanksgiving (unless there is more than one bun in this oven). Lots of stops and walking and potty breaks. Pillow for comfort in the car. We made an 18hour trip (one way) when I was pregnant with our first. Learned a lot during that experience.
  • We are leaving tomorrow for a trip from DC to Seattle and Vancouver. I paid a little extra so we have premium economy and therefor a little extra leg room during the long flight.  I also made sure to pre-select seats so that either I or my husband (who has really long legs) has an aisle seat. That way I don't have to feel bad about getting up frequently to walk around/go to the bathroom.  I'm also planning to wear compression tights which I've read is important during pregnancy to help prevent blood clots from developing.
  • We visit family two provinces away for the summer and it is about a 30 hour drive. We will make the trip back at the end of August (15 weeks)! Lots of breaks with a toddler and to walk around! Rest when you can! We will also be flying home for Christmas. I will be 32 weeks for the first flight and 34 weeks when we head back but it's only a 3 hour flight so I will make sure I stretch on the flight! As long as you are comfortable you should be good to go!
  • We have no travel plans for the near-future since the big kids start school in three weeks. We were going to visit Disneyland during Christmas with the in-laws, but we'll have to revise plans due to being high-risk and not wanting to travel too far from the hospital and home. I've traveled, usually by car, in previous pregnancies. I stay within 30 minutes of home once I hit early term.

  • In December for Christmas we're going to my MILs like we do every year. (She's awesome. Zero stress, totally chill) She lives about 3 hours away. Since I'll be 7 months or so along by then if all goes well she'll probably let me sit in the recliner with my feet up and make my husband fix me a plate of her prime rib and scalloped potatoes! LOL

But at that time, I can't see us driving or flying anywhere further than that. Now we probably could but I have to stop every hour to pee so it would take forever!
