what was you ladies' experiences at the 12 month check up?
I'm concerned because I keep hearing the question pop up about baby "talking". He says mama, Dada, and will make all sorts of other sounds ya, ada, buh, and other noises with his mouth but no actual "words".
He's also started shaking his head and he'll roll his eyes into the back of his head sometimes.
We haven't had our checkup yet. But. We've been good about just trusting our gut feeling on some things, and thankfully we have a pediatrician that's very laid back (old school) and doesn't easily get concerned.
M only says dad and mom. Today she did sign thank you for the first time. But otherwise no other words. Like you, she does have tons of sounds though. My husband and I were talking about it, and jointly decided that because we know she can understand what we're saying and follow simple commands (come here, no mam, may mommy have a bite?) we aren't worried. We would be worried though, if she didn't have many words AND didn't seem to understand what we were saying.
I read somewhere that often times, kids that are physically advanced (M walking at 8 months seems to fit this) tend to lag in speech a bit and vice versa. Has to do with their brain development. Not sure if you fall into that camp or not?
We has our dr appt and our ped asked if there are 1-2 words E says that he could understand. I was like "ahhhh...there are several things he says that I can understand but it's not always clear". He said no worries, the "normal" range for words spoken now is 0-2.
Words - Our pedi really wasn't too concerned with what she can repeat right now. In fact he told us 12-18 months they may not add a ton of words to their vocab, but they will take in so many words! If that makes sense. He said 18 months is really the turning point with language.
Food - I asked about their diet and if there's anything we should still be staying away from (i.e. Honey) and he said nope! At this age, as long as there aren't any allergies, let them eat it! Obviously the size should be appropriate tho. Like with meats and some fruits.
Sleep - I don't have much to report there. Didn't ask much about it since (cross our fingers) she's been a great sleeper for the pst few months.
She got 5 shots! Poor babe. Wasn't thrilled with them but recovered quickly.
E says "uh-oh" and just babbles otherwise. Her pedi said that's normal for 12 month olds, that her vocabulary would likely start to expand in the coming months.
I remember on the chart it said like 0-2 words for this age and like 5 to 7 at the 15 month. But Julia says a lot of things and means them like Laika(dogs name), cat, go, dada, up and Jack(friend). She was a little late on the crawling thing, but we're already taking a few steps here and there.
I was getting worried about this too, but like you guys, she seems to understand a lot. She also says a lot of things repetitively and I assume they mean something to her, haha
DD1 wasn't saying many words at 1 year old. However, now at 3 years old her vocabulary is huge! Side note- she's testing us with saying "bad" words like saying what the heck and dang it. Lol. I'm not going to be ready for when she learns swear words!
DD2 says mama, dada, Crystal (dog), Cooper (dog) and signs all done and more.
P doesn't have many words either, just mama and dada and lots of babbling. He seems to understand some others like milk, dog, and no but I don't know for sure that he 'knows' them. I always feel like he is paying close attention though. He has been focusing on walking this month, so maybe talking is the next thing?

Elise is behind in her communication skills as well because she started walking early. She can say "this" and "dada". She rarely says dada anymore though. She can also sign more.
We had ours last week and Will's Dr seemed less concerned with how many words he could say and more about whether or not he seemed to understand us. When we mentioned we use "Ah ah!" when he's getting into something he shouldn't and he listens she seemed satisfied and moved on.
Also, I heard somewhere (maybe here??) that those monthly milestones are meant to be reached by the end of the month. A lot can change in a month.
Thanks, ladies. That puts my mind at ease. Sometimes I wish there was less info out in the world. I'd trust my gut more. I think he's doing perfectly well.
We just had ours today and as far as words go our doc said he expects 3 by now, but he wasn't too concerned that P only has 2. Otherwise it was a quick check up with 3 shots for us.

We haven't had our checkup (it's at the end of the month) but we're at 0 words here, other than babbling. He started walking at 11 months, understands several words, and will SOMETIMES repeat something, but he isn't using words to mean anything yet. He's also doing a few signs, but not 100% of the time...
Samesies to everyone. Pedi didn't seem concerned since she understands things and has mama and dada. I mentioned that she will say a word consistently for a week or 2 and then never says it again and doc said no worries. She learned it and is storing it for later.
It was crazy though- no undressing and she got to get on the big kid scale!
@FTM53 Oh I agree!! That's very cool. After the 2-4-6, out medical group only does appointments every 6 months! We didn't get a 9 month appointment, and I think a lot of you ladies did.

Also, super exciting that our pedi is 5 months pregnant! She's adorable and we love her, so this is awesome news.
Our next appointment is at 15 months.
