First birthday/ gender reveal advice

So my daughter turns 1 year old next month and I'll find out the gender of baby #2 next week. I was thinking it would be cute for my daughter's smash cake to also be a gender reveal cake for her sibling. Do you think this is a good or bad idea? Not sure if I should just let my girl have her moment or it it would be cute to add in the gender reveal....

Re: First birthday/ gender reveal advice

  • Really, first birthdays are more for the parents than the kids. I say this after having DS first birthday last year. He will not remember who was there or what was done for him and I went all out lumberjack themed. Huge custom pancake cake that costs more than I want to spend on my wedding cake. It was so fun. But that being said. I was super upset when my friends didn't show up and I had to put it into perspective. He will not remember this. I will. Right now the memories are more for me than him. And I ate a lot of cake. Haha.

Here are my thoughts on the smash cake idea. I love it and I think it's super cute. DS did not understand the concept of the cake. He did not like getting messy at the time so he was not about it. I had to cut it open for him before he would even touch it. Hah he has since gotten over the "I don't like to be messy while I eat" phase.

  • Maybe do a big smash cake for your DD and her birthday moment and pictures (because those are super special and adorable), then let her smash a small gender reveal cupcake as well? Good compromise while you have everyone gathered. Or you and your DH can smash some cupcakes into each other's faces wedding cake style! Lots of options if you do some cupcakes in addition to the birthday girl's smash cake.
  • I think it's a great time to do both! As @supercoolstephy said, a one year old doesn't really know what's going on anyways. ;) Plus it can be a sweet way to include her in the reveal. I think my family would appreciate it if I did both together because with all our schedules it can be difficult to get events to suit everyone.
I like @cricket99 idea of letting her have her cake (but I'm a huge fan of smash cakes ;) ) and then doing the reveal another way.
  • I think that's adorable and don't think it's a big deal since your LO is only 1. If she were 3, it would be a different story, but for 1, it's a cute way to include her and she'll get even more attention. Plus, cute for any announcements/holiday cards if you get it on camera!
  • I agree with @supercoolstephy. DD didn't enjoy her smash cake at her party last month. She didn't have a clue what to do with it.

While I think the idea is very cute I'm not sure it will turn out the way you want.
  • I love this idea! I like @Cricket99's idea of doing separate cupcakes. And I ditto what has been said about the party being for you. Have fun! So exciting.

  • Thanks for the advice! I think I like the cupcake idea too. I think she'll be into having her smash cake too....she loves playing with food. I feel like she needs to go straight to the tub after each meal lol.
  • I love the idea!
