@Lauradi1010 the technician I took a class from said behind the driver is safer than passenger side (more likely to get t-boned on the passenger side). And of course, center is the safest.

DH drives a mustang (first car out of college 8 years ago so we are milking not having a second car payment as long as possible). There's essentially no middle seat (it's just slightly raised) and the back seat is so small DH's seat hits it. Passenger side is only option for his (and no passenger can ride in the front seat comfortably). It will be in the center in my SUV which will be what the baby rides in 95% of the time. FTM so don't have to deal with 2 car seats.

Glad you brought this up. We installed the car seat last weekend behind the passenger for the same basic reason- we don't own a Mustang, but our only car is also a two-door hatchback (we drive, like, once every 3 weeks- to everyone in our lives who said "omg you need a new car"- no car payment, thanks!).
Anywho, DH said yesterday he had the bright idea to move the car seat to the middle. He hasn't measured it but believes the seat will fit in the backseat center- despite the middle being a bit raised- while allowing both driver and passenger the normal amount of room in front. I told him honestly I had no idea if that was safe or not.

  • I have a small SUV (Toyota Rav 4) and we were unable to install the base in the middle, but once we moved DS to the convertible, it would go in the middle. I think it depends on the car and car seat type.
  • @Lauradi1010 agree with kvh22 that middle is safest, then driver's side, then passenger side. Research shows you generally are more protective of your side as a driver.

@DeansGirl14 make sure to read the owner's manual for your vehicle to make sure the middle is an approved location for car seats.

@DeansGirl14 if the center will work, that's great. I'm kind of hoping the technician who is inspecting our installation tomorrow will be able to figure out how to put his in the center but I have low expectations. If you have a place near you that can inspect it, they'd know for sure whether it's safe (as long as it's by a certified technician). California Highway Patrol does them for free in the parking lot at the hospital where I'm delivering one Tuesday morning a month and you have to sign up in advance.
