Fitness Friday Check-in 7/7

Is your plan to get a certain number of steps each day? Do you have workout videos you can plan to do at least x days this week? Is there a fur baby in your life who is your partner in fitness for daily walks? What classes, routines, or the like do you want to do this week?

Bottom line: The first trimester brings with it a myriad of funky symptoms that can make it difficult to "get up and go" when we want to stay active. What activities do you plan to do this week that you know will help you stay moving? How do you plan to stick to it? Let's share some ideas before the weekend!

Re: Fitness Friday Check-in 7/7

  • I cut back my running to a walk/jog almost.  I've been doing 30 mins a day.  I'd like to do more but I'm so exhausted right now.  My 22 month old has been up a lot at night so that doesn't help either.  I'd like to do arm exercises, any ideas?

  • I really want to check out prenatal workout videos! Last pregnancy at this point I wasn't feeling too hot, and this time around I want to take advantage of feeling OK...for now. I am a pretty active person, but mainly now my only form of exercise is running around after my 15 month old. If anyone can recommend a video or two, please do!
  • @rachaeles Push ups! For now at least. For the long term, I find having a set of 5 and 8 lb dumbells at home can give me a decent arm workout. I also have a 10 lb set which pretty much covers everything I need.

I was trying to remember when I quit running last time. I hate that it's triple digits right now and my daughter is starting to transition to one nap. I was using her 10am nap to workout at home since we have a treadmill, but I think I'm about to lose that hour. I don't mind running with her outside, but it's way too hot. I hope to continue to do 5-6 miles 3xweek into my second tri. We'll see on that one.

  • I have an elliptical at home, which is great for low impact cardio and when I don't have time or feel like driving to the gym. When I do make it to the gym, I'm probably going to stick with my main 4 things from before: stairs, rower, bike, and treadmill. I try to walk and hike a lot, but it's so hot here now and I heard exercising in the heat is a "no", but I'll still do that when I can.
  • I recently quit my regular Barre3 class so we could join our neighborhood pool which also has a nice gym. I'm starting to get used to being SO TIRED all the time so I plan (we will see if it actually happens though) to start going again this weekend to use the elliptical and the bike. I also have some Jillian Michaels workout videos I can stream but man is she tough!

  • @rachaeles 30 minutes a day is awesome! Our LOs can make sleep tricky, and to have someone who is keeping us up at night when we're already so tired is the worst! I hope it passes and your LO gives you better shut eye!

As for arm exercises, pushups are great (as @missnc77 mentioned) because they are a multi-joint exercise. You can work a lot of your upper body+core with that one move! There are also a lot of variations with pushups. You can stagger your hands differently, you can twist up and reach one hand up to the sky (alternating sides) between each push up, etc. Beyond that, having a set of dumbbells that you can use can be a nice way to get in some shoulder and back work, too. If you check out YouTube, there are a ton of demo videos that could be a good place to start!

  • @emklein86, I think we have a few women here who do workout videos (maybe they posted last week about it?). One of my friends is a personal trainer who owns her own business and trains clients across the U.S. with her online program. If you were ever interested in her at-home stuff, you could check it out here:

She's a  mother of 2 and worked out through her pregnancies, so she has some great prenatal workouts, too!

  • I ran this morning (5.5ish miles) at a really light pace because my cold has my lungs all goofy. I have a training "brick" tomorrow (bike and then run), and then Sunday is my day off.
Monday: run 5 miles in the morning, swim workout in the evening
    Tuesday: back/chest/bis resistance training
Wednesday: leg day + swim workout in the evening
    Thursday: shoulder/tris resistance training
    Friday: run 5 miles
    Saturday: moderate bike and/or swim

Sunday: TRIATHLON DAY!!! Whoop whoop! I'm super excited that I think this triathlon will still go well even though I'll need to take it easier than I had planned. I kind of want to "announce" to the women I'm competing with at the race for the fun of it. I have my second beta HCG draw on Monday this week, so if those numbers are looking good, I probably will do something like a "baby on board" sticker on the back of my tank

  • Thank you @LiveNLove44! I will definitely look into that!
  • Dang @LiveNLove44 I couldn't do a triathlon when I wasn't pregnant! You get the bad ass award for the day.

I went to my workout group this morning and killed it! I got box jumps for the first time since pre-first-baby! And I wasn't light headed or nauseous at all so I kept at my normal pace. I'm really hoping I can keep this up. Last time I gave up right about now because I was bone crushingly tired, had headaches, was light headed and got winded so fast. Maybe my body is now used to working out on crazy hormones and I can keep up!

Keep it up ladies! Only 8 more months to go
  • I do Baby Boot Camp. I've done it for over a year and hope to continue through this pregnancy. There are a few moms in the group who are due in a couple of weeks and they have inspired me to want to keep going. I didn't work out at all with my son, but I want to stay active this pregnancy and keep going 3x a week. I went to my first class today since knowing I was pregnant and felt good.
  • @GeekBeagle isn't it amazing to see women who are able to do that through the end of pregnancy?? It's great motivation to do what we can, when we can! You're going to rock it this pregnancy!

  • @LiveNLove44 Yes! I never thought that would be me but I am sure going to try! Thank you!
  • If anyone is in the market for an adorable, durable, and totally comfortable throughout pregnancy workout top, I have 2 of these tank tops and just ordered a third (new color, naturally). fortwofitness.com also has a 20% discount on new orders!

  • @LiveNLove44 Thank you for the tips!  I did my 30 min walk earlier and changed the incline throughout.  Afterwards, I found a prenatal arm workout.  I searched for one on Pinterest.
  • @rachaeles, I love using the incline feature on treadmills to ramp up my workout. It's great for your joints and it works your muscles in a way that keeps them guessing  Great idea! I hope the arm workout feels good!

  • I am trying to get in my steps everyday and I try to do yoga at least once during the day ((before bed)), twice if I can. Gradually, as I move into the second trimester I'd like to Up my walks to 3-5 miles again. PGAL brain has me freaked to push too hard ((or at all)), especially in the summer.
  • I saw we had a couple water workout folks, so I thought I'd share that I stumbled upon a good looking lap workout to share. It looks easy enough to adjust for length (just do one part at a time or work up to it)!

  • I run 3 miles everyday 6 days a week with my daughter in a jogging stroller. I just found out today Im pregnant, I plan on running still I don't wanna cut back but probably will run at a slower pace when it is really hot out.I also use my apple watch and track daily fitness goals and i'd like to reach 10k steps each day I usually almost double that between taking care of my daughter and running but i got super lazy my first pregnancy and don't want that to happen again.

@jerseygirl9090 nice workout routine! I swear it should double mileage when you're pushing a stroller  Do you ever cross train? I ran with my first two pregnancies and it can be tough on the joints with high mileage, as I'm sure you know, so keep your eyes peeled here for some cross training ideas! There are some women with good ideas to keep it interesting, too!

  • @LiveNLove44 I've been wanting to get one of those tank tops!
  • I typically run 3 to 4 days a week and do Barre class 1 day. I'll be walking in between
  • @LiveNLove44 Yeah I plan on doing other workouts too especially as I get further along. My first pregnancy I went to the gym but with my DD that's not so easy I'd have to wait for my husband to come home to watch her and his schedule is crazy busy most days. I thought about joining a gym with daycare but I'm hesitant to use daycare still with my daughter she is only 1

  • So I was told by my midwives not to work out until I get seen about this spotting so I'm taking it easy this week. I plan to do yoga everyday and take the pups on a light, easy walk in the morning before it gets too hot! It will be hard for me to not go to my workouts, but I know it's for the best.
  • @arhodes6, you are so right. With my son, I worked out all the way through to 33w4d when I developed problems with premature labor. At first the doctor said it was because I was working too long and the stress was too much, so I stopped coaching (cutting down from 60-80 hour weeks to 50ish). Then workouts started triggering it, so I had to cut back. It was mentally SO hard, but it was physically so good for providing my DS with the best environment possible to finish growing! Yoga and light, easy walks sound like a perfect balance to keep your mind in the right place and keep your body moving in the best way for you and this pregnancy. I hope you hear good news soon!!

  • I have spent the last 10 months doing yoga.  I am really hoping to make it through this pregnancy at least doing that.  I have a gym membership and accountability with friends.  Plus, my gym time is usually my only me time.  The struggle will be with the first and third trimesters.  I usually rock the second.

This week I did well, but I don't feel anything yet.  I ran and did yoga and light weights.  I hope to run until my cerclage goes in.  After that I will stop and just do yoga, bike, and light weights.
  • I'm in awe of some of you, I'm so not in shape, certainly not triathlon shape! But I joined a nation-wide group called Fit4Mom a few months ago, my branch has the Stroller Strides (cardio) and Stroller Barre classes. Basically we strap our kids in their strollers at the park for an hour, and we walk/jog to different stations then to do cardio or Barre exercises. I love it because 4-5 days out of the week I'm out of the house and working out with other moms of young kids, so there is no judgement that my body still isn't beach ready. And then my kid gets to play at the park afterwards which helps her run off energy. So many wins. My OB says I can keep it up as long as I'm comfortable, although I'll need to modify some of the movements to be pregnancy safe in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters.
