First ultrasound 5w 6d, heart rate 83 (possible tw)

I have PCOS and took ten months to conceive with the help of a fertility clinic. They monitor us closely during early pregnancy at my clinic, so they had me come in for my first ultrasound today at 5 weeks 6 days. The heart rate was only 83, apparently they like to see over 100, or ideally 110. My doctor said I am likely to miscarry, and even said "well at least we know you can get pregnant now" as if she'd already given up on this pregnancy and is thinking of my next cycle. I'm going back Sunday to check again and am just feeling so heartbroken and worried.

Does anyone have any experience with a slow heart rate like this, or success stories they can share?

  • I don't have any experience with that but I wanted to let you know I'm rooting for you! I have PCOS also and just received my first BFP last week after a year of trying. Hugs!
  • Nothing to share except hugs and prayers for you!!
  • No experience but I hope everything goes ok.
  • No experience with this but I will be thinking of you with fingers crossed.
I agree with @tosh24 that it is still really early and here's plenty of time for that heartbeat to get up there!!

  • 5w6d is on the very early end of when you can expect to see a HB at all. The baby's heart may have just started beating today. Try not to worry!! The followup ultrasound will likely show a stronger heartbeat. I would think about switching practices if the OB had that attitude.

Thinking of you! And as others said, maybe it's time to look around for another OB. Someone who won't write you off with one ultrasound.
  • Hugs! No experience, but it's early. Hang tight until your follow up. Hoping for a great update.
  • I hope you have a great update on Sunday. This may be a good question for the ladies on the 1st or 2nd trimester board who are further along. ❤

  • I wouldn't get too worried yet. I had an ultrasound yesterday at around 5w1d and there was no heartbeat yet. They told me ahead of time to be prepared for that and did not seem concerned. I think it's usually closer to 8 weeks when a heartbeat should 100% be there. Good luck!!
  • I agree with pp, keep calm and try not to stress. And find a doc who will be sensitive enough to not write off your baby this early. I hope you get to stick it to them on Sunday!! Keep us posted
  • It's not unusual to not be able see a heartbeat at all that early, let alone expect it to be 110. I definitely think your doctor may have been jumping the gun by dismissing this pregnancy as if it isn't viable. Unfortunately the only way to know is to wait. I really hope everything looks great on Sunday! I would try to stay cautiously optimistic (easier said than done, I know).

  • I'll echo others in that it's really early. The heart will likely have just started beating. Fingers crossed for a great ultrasound on Sunday!

Different circumstances, but I was told that I'd probably miscarry at 5 weeks with DD. They wanted me back in a week to check growth, and little nugget grew just as she should have. My husband and I have always wondered why my OB didn't just wait before giving me the miscarriage speech because that following week was brutal. Good luck on Sunday!
  • My sons heart rate was 90 at 6 weeks. I went back for an ultrasound to check on him and ended up losing his twin, who had one of 125 at 6 weeks. Try not to stress. 5 weeks is so early, still.
  • I agree that it's so early! Thinking of you and hoping you see improvement at your next appointment!
  • @missnc77 @Gingermom15 thank you for your stories, that really helps.
  • Thinking of you and sending you lots of love.

@hojo2018 please try not to worry too much. I had an ultrasound today at exactly 6 weeks and the ultrasound tech wouldn't even determine the heart rate because she said it's just too early. She said we were lucky to even be able to see it at only 6 weeks. I hope you get some peace of mind at your next appointment.
