Weight maintenance during pregnancy

When I got pregnant this time around, I was up about 20 lbs from my first pregnancy (and about 30 lbs overweight total).  I will admit my lifestyle has become more sedentary with my new job and I haven't been cooking as much as I used to. I have started light/moderate workouts and cutting carbs in an effort to be more healthy and improve my terrible energy levels and headaches. My weight has been dropping slowly.  I am currently 5 lbs below my beginning pregnancy weight.

My question is whether anyone has spoken to their doctor about weight loss/maintenance during pregnancy? I can't seem to find any consensus on whether weight gain is mandatory during pregnancy as long as you are eating healthy and exercising (assuming you're already are overweight to begin with).  Can you change diet/exercise during pregnancy and still have a healthy baby if you aren't gaining weight?  I will be asking at my next appt, but was curious to hear if anyone else has already had this conversation with their doc

  • I'm down if anyone wants a virtual exercise and healthy eating accountability partner.i haven't done either since I got OHSS in Feb and subchorionic bleed in April. I got cleared to 3 0 min on elliptical  2 weeks ago
  • @jackiesmom324, I'd be down for that. I have so little motivation these days to do much other than sleep. I had terrible symphysis pubis dysfunction with DD and my doctor told me I really need to keep up the physical activity if I want to try and curb that this time.

  • I lost 10 lbs in my first trimester and my doctor is hoping for more. I'm obese so he stressed to eat clean and stay active to reduce risk of complications. I only need to consume 350 more calories a day during second trimester than normal recommend daily amount and I was probably consuming a good 1000+ more pre pregnancy. Honestly I've never had more motivation in my life than I do now. I would for sure have that conversation with your doc.
  • @kersey0208 I understand the motivation!! I've lost 16 lbs since finding out I am pregnant... and have an appointment tomorrow at 16+5 and will be talking to Dr. about healthy weight parameters from here on out... I certainly am not using pregnancy as a weight loss method, but if I am eating healthy and exercising for the sake of LO and a better pregnancy, I just want to know if weight loss is healthy, too!
  • I only gained 8 lbs total with DS. He was born 6lbs 4 oz. I am petite and plus sized but no more than 20lbs overweight for my height. I ate regularly and maintained my work outs while pregnant and have been doing the same with this pregnancy. I am 19 weeks today and have gained 2 lbs so far. My high risk and regular OB never expressed any issues as long as baby and Mama are thriving and doing well.
  • I've been maintaining.. I'm overweight but I've never gained much with each of my pregnancies. Hoping for the same with this baby.
I was losing weight pre-pregnancy and was down 20 lbs before I found out I was pregnant. I stopped trying to lose weight at that point and have been focusing on not gaining since then.
  • Thanks to HG I'm down from prepregnancy weight. The doctor wasn't concerned at my last appt but just said to eat when And what I felt I could and not worry about calories at this point.  With DS, I had gained an unhealthy amount of weight (60lbs) so this is new territory for me.

  • I gained 55 pounds with DS and I held on to about 20 of that going into this pregnancy. Last time, eating was the only thing that helped with nausea and this time I just haven't had a huge appetite. I've always been an over-eater so I am not going hungry by any means, just not stuffing my face.

I just looked at my medical records and I had gained about 15 pounds by now and I haven't gained anything yet this pregnancy. I am hoping to gain the recommended 15-25 for overweight women this time around. It's also a little easier (I mean harder, but as far as weight gain lol) to manage since I can't come home from work and just veg and sleep since I have DS to run after.

  • yea im good to go and get started. does anyone have a fit bit or another way we can use to stay in touch
i used to use my fitness pal but sometimes it stresses me out
im planning on trying to eat healthy meals and decent size portions im not really thinking im going to calorie count just yet
  • I have a Fitbit, somewhere in this house... hmm.  Overweight BMI FTM here.  Not really any weight gain so far but I feel like that's about to change (15+5).  My doc hasn't mentioned it yet one way or the other.

I fell off the fitness wagon prepregnancy although I still ate quite healthy.  But I couldn't even work out if I wanted to during first trimester, I felt horrid!  Now that I'm getting some energy back, I'm finding that I am SO out of shape or whatever that I'm struggling just to walk around the block!  Huffing and puffing like the big bad wolf after 5 minutes.  (The heat doesn't help of course.)  It's so discouraging, which just leads me to want to lay on the couch and pout.

  • I'm smaller than my first pregnancy but still overweight so I've been maintaining so far.  I asked my doctor for a weight range and she suggested to keep in between 15-20lbs of weightgain for the pregnancy.  I like the range because it gives baby room to grow but I know that it won't be a huge deal for me to work that off afterwards.

  • I have an apple watch and can download whatever app people want to use.....I think my fitness pal is popular. I just need to figure out these headaches first. I was in the ER today with pain so bad I felt sick and face numbness. They are ordering an MRI for next week. They couldn't do a CT today because of the baby :(

  • Ugh I'm sorry @ameliabedelia-2n I hope they get to the root of the problem with the MRI and that it's a simple fix

I lost about 50 lbs in the year before getting pregnant (now at a healthy bmi and working on toning) and then another 15 thanks to HG. At my first appointment I asked about continuing my current workout/ eating habits. Doctor basically said listen to my body as far as working out goes and try to stay as active as I can, but to not follow a calorie or carb limiting diet (obviously within reason). I still eat fairly similarly, only now I incorporate more healthy fat (avocados and nuts) and dont limit my carbs as much, and I always make sure to have a protein shake after a big workout. I'm still down 2 lbs from when I got pregnant and doc said he would really like to see me back to my prepregnancy weight by my 20 week ultrasound (2 weeks away). He also said I should gain at least 15 lbs on top of that and no more than 40.

My first pregnancy I gained about 30 lbs before pre-ecclampsia hit and I don't wanna talk about what happened after hahhaha
  • Spoke to my OB about weight gain/loss yesterday... he told me that it would be OK for me to not gain any weight this pregnancy (already lost 17 lbs since finding out I was PG), but that it is selfish on his part to ask that of me. I am very overweight, and am going to focus on trying to keep that goal, anyways... he also told me that my weightloss isn't a concern and further weightloss would be OK, as long as LO is growing
  • Did anyone else hear the news story from Ohio (big TW to entire following story) where two guys shot up a gender reveal party? One woman died, and eight other people were injured (including kids aged 8, 6, and 2). The woman whose baby the party was for was shot and ended up miscarrying. I just can't believe how horrible people can be.  :'(
