Need your Zika tips!

Apologies in advances as this is probably a limiting topic...

I have read the CDC guidelines and done a little bit of research but I need specifics bc it's just a worry of mine. I'm needing help with your Zika avoidance tips.

I live near a Zika zone and my son loves being outdoors.

Figured you mamas have good ideas for me.

Re: Need your Zika tips!

  • Move.

Only kidding, but I have no advice. Zika terrifies me, I can't image be living in or near a zone. I hope someone is more helpful than me! I know many use essential oils to keep the skeeters away, but I don't know much about that or what concoctions they use.  :/

  • I've heard lemongrass and lemongrass oil. I know the CDC just published recently regarding the use of oils instead of deet. Of course it's for West Nile and not Zika specifically if that makes a difference. https://www.cdc.gov/westnile/faq/repellent.html
  • Do the doctors test for this now during pregnancy?

I use witch hazel, tea tree, eucalyptus, lemongrass, and lavender in my mix.

  • Lurker -- I live in south FL and truthfully I'm not overly concerned. Check with your city, but most "Zika areas" have been doing a great job at spraying. I know my town just did a flyover spray a week ago. I never see mosquitos. And Miami is no longer even a huge threat as there hasn't been new cases - though I will be avoiding Miami because of so many international visitors that it isn't worth it.

If you're worried just get some thin long sleeves and pants (best for sun protection anyhow) and I have a bug stick I apply that makes me smell like a citronella candle. Also the family sensitive deet sprays are nice because they don't leave you sticky and smelly. And honestly, I forget 80% of the time to put anything on.
  • I live on the Gulf Coast and I'm just using my normal Cutter "natural" bugspray. it is some blend of essential oils. We get our yard treated for mosquitos occasionally, but probably won't be doing that anymore since we're trimming the budget for baby. I'm just trying not to be too concerned since I haven't heard of any cases in my immediate area.

You ladies are so supportive! Thank you!

I needed to hear all of these tips and your thoughts.

Ok, I'll take precautions without getting worked up. We live in Broward but my husband travels to Miami once a week. And I love the "move" response bc that's so me  :D

Thank you for each of these responses!

Edited: forgot to add that I've been told my husband and I will be tested around 8-10 weeks for Zika.
  • @barrelocarol this probably won't help your anxiousness but there was a documentary on mosquitos and their diseases on Discovery tonight. It was so interesting!

Hey!! I am also from South Florida!

I was going to say the same thing. Most cities are spraying for mosquitos, and I compulsively slather on bug spray (California Baby and Dr. Mercola make a good natural version that smells pleasant)  every time I'm outside.

I'm in Palm Beach county! Hi ladies!

My OB did set the fear of Zika deep in me, but that's his job. My mom is also a NICU nurse and is incredibly paranoid about Zika. Personally I'm more worried about my husband getting it and transmitting it. It feels silly having protected sex during pregnancy - but that is my biggest precaution.

When I called the OB to schedule my apt they asked if I had traveled outside the US in the past 12 weeks. We had - DR for honeymoon. They had to get the test approved by the state (I live in CT). So I got blood drawn last week, and its about a 2 week wait for results. I would say they will test if you say you were definitely in a Zika 'zone' before or during conception. Hope that helps.
