Ada vs. Eliza?

I can't figure out how to do one of those nifty polls from my bump app but what do you guys prefer:

Eliza Kate
or
Ada Elizabeth (maybe Ada Claire)

DH loves Eliza and I really like it but I'm not 100% sold. I think Ada is pretty (and less used than Ava) and we're actually related to Ada Lovelace so it might be kind of neat to incorporate that name.

Re: Ada vs. Eliza?

  • Hmmm that's tough I love both! I guess maybe just a slight edge to Ada since it seems every E name someone wants to shorten to Ellie lately.

  • Loading the player...
  • I give a slight edge to Ada too, since it's a tad more unusual, but both are lovely.

  • Eliza, because I LOVE it and DH vetoed.
  • Ada! Love it and it was vetoed by DH because of our last name (which can be a slang name for a penis... similarly to Johnson). He said she would be doomed to "ate a ______" forever
  • Eliza
    DD: Ophelia 5/18/15
  • I like Eliza, too. I'd like to add it doesn't have to become Ellie. Lizzy, Liz, and Liza are all nickname possibilities for it.
  • I'd choose Ada, but both are fantastic.
  • @MamaRN13 I laughed out loud! You definitely have to think about your last name and what people will call your kid!
  • I'm not a huge fan of Ada. I like Eliza a lot more.
  • @FelicitousJinx we'd probably just call her Eliza. I like nick names but my husband does not. Our daughter is Evelyn and it's very rare that we ever say Evie, though I like it.
  • Ada

Eliza.  There are so many Ava's which makes me feel "meh" about Ada
  • I prefer Eliza. Yes to it potentially getting shortened to Ellie though. My mom is an Eleanor and it gotten to Ellie to El.

Now knowing your daughter is Evelyn I def prefer Ada. Evelyn and Eliza is a bit tongue twisting and matchy

    This.

One other thing to consider, I don't like using two short forms of names together. Eliza Kate is like cutting off the name at it's knees. Eliza Katherine or Elizabeth Kate sound more full and expressive.
  • I genuinely like both but if I had to select only one I think I'd pick ada. Although I'm going back and forth lol.
    Me: 31  DH: 32      <3 DH since 12.2009       Married 08.2013       EDD 12.2017
  • I don't like either of them as a sibset with Evelyn.  and I don't like Kate aa a MN:  IMO, Katherine would sound way better.  Can we make other suggestions/ give us more parameters?
  • Don't care for Ada at all (too little old lady and not in a cute way. Harriet is cute...Ada is frumpy). I think with sister Evelyn, I'd avoid Eliza too. How about:

    Clara
    Amelia
    Anna
    Georgia
    Caroline
    Liza

  • @cantrellja ooh interesting! We are the opposite on this! Ada is similar to the name Ava and I think it sounds classy but Harriet sounds frumpy to me! I put Harriet in the same category as Ramona and Dorothy- grouchy old ladies! I feel like an Ada would bake me cookies and serve tea. lol

Love Amelia but a family member has already used it. Darn it!

  • @thepicklemonster sure! Suggestions are welcome!
We are pretty set on one of those two names but I'm always interested to see what others think up :)
  • @AMCsquared I go back and forth all day long! My husband is leaning towards Eliza but this week I'm favoring Ada.
  • @Bringmemylongswordho Eliza Kate has the same number of syllables as our daughter's name Evelyn Jane so I don't mind the shorter middle name. I've never been a fan of Katherine for some reason.

I've also thought about Eliza Wren
  • I do prefer Eliza Wren to Eliza Kate, but still am pulling for Ada.
  • That's funny-- that you see Ada so differently than I do. I still think Anna would be nice and works very well with Kate. I also think Carolyn/Caroline or Madelyn/Madeline would work well with sister Evelyn. And Clara Wren is precious.
  • @cantrellja I know too many people and it's ruined a lot of names for me. Alas I can never have an Anna or Caroline. I don't want to think about those people everytime I say my daughter's name ;)

I like Nora quite a bit but my husband was very meh on it. Same for the name Mae which I think is adorable. I'm a sucker for old names.

It would be so much easier if hubby would just let me do whatever I wanted ;) lol
  • ok, here's a list of other sweet little old lady names:

    Corinne
    Lydia
    Della
    Lorna
    Pearl
    Lillian
    Marilyn
    Mary Claire
    Louise (nn Lulu)
    Jane
    Sylvia
    Jocelyn
    Adela
    Estelle

  • Definitely like Ada!
  • I like both, but prefer Eliza.
