GTKY: Sports

Did you / do you participate in sports? If so / not, would you like LO to? Do you like to watch any professional teams?

It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most...not where you live, or what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes... There's no dollar sign on a piece of mind, this I've come to know! *ZBB*

I did ballet and swimming growing up. I want my LOs to at least try swimming - even if it's just to learn the life skill. My oldest loves to dance, so I think I'll probably put her in that when she gets potty trained/reaches the age minimum. Ill also let them try anything they tell me they're interested in.

also I love the Green Bay packers for football. Otherwise, I barely follow professional sports.

I am a huge Yankees / Giants fan, but DH hogs the tv with the Mets. I did a lot of sports growing up - cross country, track, basketball, cheerleading, softball, and soccer. DH swam, played football, baseball, and wrestled. I continued soccer in college and would have also done softball if my shoulder wasn't so damaged... he wrestled. Our kids will learn to swim at a young age. I had some traumatic experiences because I never took lessons and I didn't end up really learning to swim until I was 12. DH watches college football, but we don't really have favorites.

I played soccer all my life. Varsity soccer and cross country in HS. In college, ultimate frisbee team and intramural soccer. And my husband and I played in a recreational adult league until I found out I was pregnant with my daughter. He's always played soccer too.

He dreams of coaching our kids some day, but I don't want to force any interests on them.

I don't really care about watching or keeping up with any professional teams but I'm a bandwagon fan for all my husband's teams.

ETA: I also coached preschool gymnastics during college. It was so much fun!
  • I played volleyball and basketball in high school and just for fun pick up games in college. I play softball now and run. DH plus soccer and runs. The girls do gymnastics and will take a swim class this summer. This fall they will try out soccer and see if they like it and t-ball in the spring.

We watch UofM football and my husband watches the Lions and Pistons (we live in Michigan). He is a huge Chelsea and Real Madrid soccer fan too!

    I'm a Giants fan too!

We both played soccer as kids and DH still plays now, so we'll put them all in soccer and DH hopes to coach eventually. I did track in high school and dance in college and always wish I had done figure skating (my parents said it was too expensive). I was more instrument focused. Our plan is to definitely put them in soccer but also give them lots of other options and see what they end up liking and wanting to stick with. No ice hockey or football though, I'm really putting my foot down there. Too scary.

ETA: DH and I both hate baseball and would love to avoid sitting through games so we likely won't put our kids on baseball/softball unless they specifically ask. The one area where we'll be selfish haha

  • I played volleyball in high school but have always generally gone more towards the arts.
I am a fan of my city's hockey and baseball teams but that's more to do with the fact that it plays and part in my cities unique culture and not at all because I actually enjoy watching those sports. If you catch me on a good day and it's a good game I do enjoy hockey though.
I plan to enroll my child in every sport possible until they choose which ones they like. This is what my parents did and I really appreciate that I had that opportunity to try new things.
  • I played basketball and volleyball and did boke racing through highschool. My husband was a professional ballroom dancer till after we were married. So my kids will probably all dance and play whatever sports they want. My husband really wants to do hip hop with DS lol I love watching baseball the most, and root for hy homerown team. Any time I go in town during baseball season I try to catch a game.
  • I danced and played field hockey and softball. DH played football. We are both Red Sox/Patriots fans and both our boys play T Ball/Baseball. Both boys also dance. My studio offers boys hip hop, tap, and gymnastics and they do all 3!
  • I played basketball and ran track in high school and played intramurals in college. DH played baseball and football in high school. We both play softball (well I did up until about a month ago). We are both HUGE sports fans and will definitely support our children participating in sports and honestly, whatever else they choose. DD1 plays basketball and DH coached her team. DD2 will start dance and tumbling when she turns 3 this winter and soccer in the spring/fall.

I'm a Bears/Bulls/STL Cardinals fan, but my husband is a big Cubs fan so I end up watching a ton of games which I actually don't mind because have you ever seen Kris Bryant?? I also play fantasy football with DH. Yeah, the sports obsession is pretty real lol
  • I played softball, volleyball and was a cheerleader in middle school and high school. I also played powder puff football. I played softball on a few summer leagues as an adult and most recently played adult kickball. That's how I met DH. I also love to bowl. DH played baseball his whole life as well as bowling. He's an amazing bowler. Has bowled a few 300 games. I love to watch most sports. I follow SU basketball since they are my home team. My favorite sports are baseball and hockey. I love the Yankees and the Buffalo Sabres hockey team. My football team is the Green Bay Packers. Our plan is to expose DS2 to every sport possible. Sports are a huge part of our lives.

  • I am definitely not an athlete. I tried sports in school but it was not my thing.   I enjoyed track but wasnt very good.  I would love our kid to participate in some activity but don't have a preference.  I love watching sports and love going to sporting events.   My husband loves baseball and is looking forward to taking our child to games.
  • I am and always have been in to equestrian sports. Even though I can't ride my horse right now I enjoy giving lessons to beginner kids to help them enjoy the sport! I am a huge Pittsburgh Penguin, Steelers and Pirates fan. Hockey is my favorite though! Enjoying being back to back Stanley cup champs!

I played softball and volleyball.  My husband played soccer.  We will likely let the kiddos dictate what sports they want.  I am, however, putting DS in dance this fall.  The boy has rhythm and loves to dance.  He can continue until he tells me otherwise.
    Also, go STL Cardinals baseball!
  • Also not an athlete. I'm good at going to the gym and working out/doing classes, but I never really got into organized sports. My parents weren't into them and so never signed me up to try anything. I will 100% be signing my kids up for a variety of things - I don't care what, I just want them to try their hand at different activities and see what they like.

DH and I LOVE baseball and watch a game or part of a game pretty much nightly during the season.

  • I am a runner. Started when I was an adult but I enjoy running races from 5k to half marathon distance. I also really like dance although I only took classes for a few years (started when I was older).  Zumba is my favorite class at the gym!!  I don't really follow any professional sports.  I definitely want to get DS in swim lessons as early as possible for safety reasons, because we like to spend time at the pool and go to the beach in the summer. Other than that, I plan to just let him choose what sports he wants to participate in. I honestly hope he just picks one and sticks with it--I think physical activity is important but I don't want all of my evenings and weekends spent at some type of practice or game!!

  • DH played tennis, soccer, and swam as a kid. He is a die hard soccer fan, so I can pretty much guarantee we'll put our LO in soccer at some point. I played basketball and softball as a kid. We're definitely a sports family, so I'd like our daughter to find some sport she likes. No gymnastics (or football) though. Too dangerous for me.

As for professional sports, DH is a lifetime Man U fan, so there's a lot of English premier league watching in our house. We also watch football in the fall (Seahawks!!!) and will attend our local MLS games. Always a fun time. DH will occasionally watch NBA games, but it's not a big thing for us.
  • Hubby is big into sport. Little As, hockey, soccer,  cricket
I plaid softball and netball and now I do circus arts (pole, contortion, handbalance, acro and ballet conditioning)
    Both really outdoors type people
We have decided  on  an activity a sport and a skill (instrument)
Kid can do whatever they like but has to pick something a team sport . An activity like dance or gym or a martial art that is a personal development thing and a skill like learning an instrument (hubby very musical family and I play claranette and violin )
Plus swimming but it doesn't really count as its an essential life skill here and everyone learns to swim weather before school or in a school Programe . It's like you learn to crawl and walk and swim. If they love it and want to do it as their activity competitively later than  yeah that's OK but swim lessons are automatic .

  • I'm not into sports. My parents signed me up for a variety of them when I was growing up but none ever interested me. I have never been terribly coordinated and I am not at all competitive, so that's just not for me. My DH went to a notre dame though, and so I found out that I do love tailgating! Any other Irish fans here?
  • @RiverSong15 we're a premier league family too! I told DH we were pregnant by giving him tiny onesies of his favorite team :)

  • I played softball and basketball until middle school. In middle school I ran distance track and in high school I danced and was a cheerleader. DD since the age of 2 asked to go to a ballerina class so when she turned 3 we enrolled her in gymnastics and dance. She actually loves them both but will tell you gymnastics is her favorite. We are letting her decide what she would like to try since we both came from families where we felt pushed into what our parents wanted.

Ultimately I want her to participate in some type of extra curricular but it doesn't have to be sports.
  • We are a tennis family. I played and DH played. V takes weekly lessons since he turned 3. V did swimming from 6 months to 2.5 years and then we moved and didn't re-enroll him. Regretting it now.
I love football, basketball, and baseball but just don't have time anymore to keep up like I used to before husband and kid.
  • I played soccer, softball, and volleyball growing up. I'm not good at any of them really. I wish I was.

    DH is decent at baseball.

I'm a Philadelphia sports fan. DH supports the Mets, Giants, and Rangers. All of our teams are in the same division so it makes for a fun time when they're both good which is rare let's be honest. Everyone asks how we make it work and I can't explain it. It's just much easier when all teams suck.

For DS, I'd love to get him into gymnastics. I think he'd love it and be great at it. DH would love for him to play baseball.

  • I used to dance a ton but haven't since my daughter was born. I also played a lot of other sports (softball, soccer, volleyball, basketball) throughout school and played on a coed soccer team for a while. Our daughter dances and has played floor hockey. I know she wants to get into more sports though too. We love being active as DH is also into biking and played soccer for a while before getting some injuries. Also Giants/Yankees fans. We love watching baseball, hockey (sabres!), and football (bills!). Our teams are terrible  I am definitely excited to see what sport paths our kids decide to go on!
  • DH is athletic, I am not. I like to do outdoorsy things but sports were never my thing. He's a huge Detroit fan so by extension so are we all lol
  • I played softball and tennis. My son swims and plays baseball. We will try to be open to what baby sister would like to play or dance or do gymnastics but swimming is important because we have a pool.

We are a divided house between DC and Baltimore teams. Can't wait to watch Ravens games with baby in the later part of this season.

  • I played basketball, volleyball, softball, and golf in high school. In college I played flag football competitively (national championship/state finals type of thing), intramural basketball, and softball. As an adult I play softball sometimes and just stopped this summer due to baby #2 and occasionally flag football/ coed basketball. DH played baseball, basketball, and football in high school, but now he is an avid golfer. We are both HUGE sports fans! Basically sports were our life for both of us when we were younger so we both definitely hope both of our sons play something.

We won't force sports on them, but I'm not going to lie I will be disappointed if they don't play anything. We are both short which makes some sports hard, so we hope to get them into golf for sure. I can't wait to watch my kids play sports if they choose to do so!

Also, we are avid UNC tar heel fans. Our wedding cake was tar heel themed lol! We also play fantasy football together as well! Can't wait til football season again!
