Maternity Clothes

Holy bloat! I haven't bitten the bullet and purchased any new clothes, but I'm so tempted! I'm only 8 weeks 3 days, but some of my pants are just getting tight from so much bloating. When did you start wearing maternity clothes with your first pregnancy? I thought I'd have weeks until I had to think about this! Does the bloat go away before the belly starts growing?

Re: Maternity Clothes

  • For my daughter's pregnancy, yes: I was bigger at eight weeks than I was at twelve. Not sure about second pregnancies, though. You can extend the use of regular clothes by using a belly band or the rubber band trick on your pants button.

I doubt I'm going to make it through the summer without shopping, for better or for worse, but I'm hoping to catch sales in a few weeks.

  • I'm not able to fit into my pants anymore either with out a belly band. I got mine from target with my first pregnancy for pretty cheap. You could also just do empire wasted dresses. I've been living in them for the last week. So comfy! Thank goodness it's summer and dress season. I don't know what I would do if it were winter lol
  • Rubber band trick or belly bands might help! Maternity pants/shorts are way more comfy. I personally think comfort outweighs trying to squeeze into my normal clothes. I didn't start showing til 16 weeks with my first. This is my second and I'm wearing maternity pants at 9 weeks. It was getting too uncomfortable by the afternoon for regular clothes. I've also been rocking some maxi skirts at work. Those are pretty pregnancy friendly. I wore them a lot postpartum too when I wanted to look cute around the house instead of sweat pants when we had family over.
  • I bit the bullet and bought a pair of maternity shorts yesterday.  None of my shorts fit comfortably from last summer.  I can get them on but they cut and dig into the middle of my stomach.  Luckily most of my jeans have a bit of stretch so I haven't had to replace them yet.

  • Yup, I gave in and bought some maternity shorts and cropped pants this weekend. I'm only 8 weeks, too, but I'm not willing to be uncomfortable with this heat we've got going. I can't remember exactly when I switched over my first pregnancy, but it wasn't this early. Maybe 10-12 weeks? Regardless, I wouldn't feel bad about when you decide to start wearing them. I'm all about comfort in my wardrobe, even when I'm not pregnant!

  • I think i started around 15 weeks with my first. I used the hair elastic trick and a belly band at first.
  • DD1 I started wearing maternity around 12 weeks.

DD2 I started wearing maternity at 7 weeks, the bloat was awful.

This time I am over 7 weeks and can still fit into my pants, but it's also dress season so I am holding out as long as possible.  I did try a pair of maternity jeans the other day and they make it questionable if I am preg or not.  I am not ready to come out to everyone just yet.

  • My first pregnancy I started wearing maternity clothes around 16 weeks.   The bloat usually does go away before the belly begins, but not always.  Im having such terrible stomach issues this time around that Id be shocked if my bloat weny away before belly showed up.
  • Oh, and now that Im on number 4, I busted out maternity at 7 weeks.
  • Question for STM+ moms:  When did your boobs stop growing?

I'm MOH in a wedding a few months post-partum and while the dresses are all empire wasted (so belly wont matter), I'm not sure at which point it might be safe to guess my breast size.

@WildMagelet I remember my boobs getting bigger after my milk came in. Pre-pregnancy I was a 34 DDD they grew several sizes during pregnancy I think I was up to a 38 H, then when my milk came in and I loss a little weight I settled around a 36 F-G.

So I guess it depends on if you plan to breastfeed. Any way to order it a bit on the larger side and have the bust taken In if needed?

    Edited:spelling
  • @burnsmommy27 - That was my intention, but I know from a tailoring standpoint that they can really only be alftered +/- 2 sizes without having to rework the structure.

  • @WildMagelet hmmm. How long can you hold off before ordering?
  • @burnsmommy27 - The Wedding isn't until April, so I wasn't planning on ordering until sometime this Fall, before the holiday crazy.  The bride knows we were TTC, and is the only one we've told so far that we're PG so that was the plan anyways in case I were to get PG and need to take a pregnant-me size into consideration.

  • @WildMagelet if I remember correctly my boobs really started to grow around the end of the 2md tri. So far should be able to give you a pretty good guesstimate of how big they may get. As of right now at 11w tomorrow I am still in my pre-pregnancy bra size but it's getting tight
  • I started wearing maternity clothes at 10 weeks with my first pregnancy with twins. I am 7 weeks now and have been wearing lots of dresses and I did wear maternity jeans. Not sure if you have a used clothing store or not, but we have a Clothes Mentor here I shop at when PG. it can be hit or miss but it's also cheap!
  • @WildMagelet My boobs stayed around the same size from second trimester-birth, but when my milk came in and I was breast feeding around the clock, they got gigantic. I think I went up two cup sizes from the time I gave birth. It was insane.
  • This is my second pregnancy. Bought shorts today because I learned the hard way on Saturday that my regular shorts do not fit anymore. With DS, I wasn't pregnant during the hot weather season so I had zero maternity shorts. I dont think that I wore maternity clothes with DS until 16-20 weeks. Can't remember specifically! I'll be 11 weeks on Wednesday.
  • This is my third and I started Saturday at 8w6d and I felt so much better! With my first two I think I made it to 12-13 weeks. No chance in hell that was happening this time!

  • I bit the bullet and bought a boat load of maternity clothes this weekend. DH took me out of state to the shopping malls (my favorite one) and I just splurged. I haven't been able to button my pants for 2 weeks! And I work in an office...I needed clothes. Old Navy, Kohls and Macys ("Motherhood" Brand) was kind to me!

Side note: I totally pulled a muscle in my back while in the fitting room. I had to text DH to come help. He has DSS around the other side of the store so he wouldn't see us buying maternity stuff....he still doesn't know. So I'm hurting at work but in my big girl pants!! :)

  • I'm in some weird denial phase where I think if I don't pull out my maternity clothes no one will know I'm pregnant. I'm hell bent on keeping it a secret from my coworkers and boss, since I haven't even been at my job 90 days yet. I'm uncomfortable in my regular pants now though at 8w 3d so I need to stop kidding myself and wear my maternity clothes.
  • I pulled out my maternity jeans and shorts this weekend, and I'm wearing my shorts now. I'm so freaking bloated and wearing normal jeans is just uncomfortable. Last time I tried to go as long as I could without wearing maternity clothes. Not this time. Give me all the comfort. Also, I wear a lot of dresses but right now I'm just not in the mood for them and the bloat. haha

  • I would totally be trying on my maternity clothes right now, but they're in the (currently) spare bedroom where we store all our crap, and DH locked it so DS can't get in. And now I can't get the stupid door unlocked.

  • I lent all but my maternity jeans to a friend, but I've been living in those and athletic shorts. With DD I was in maternity clothes around 14 weeks, this time I put the jeans on at 6 weeks. The bloat is out of control! I should be getting all my other clothes back soon though since she's due in August and knows that I'm pregnant and will need them back soon.
  • @WildMagelet my boobs didn't really grow in pregnancy but really took off once my milk came in.  I went from a 36C to a 38D with DD1.  They stayed at a 38D, and with DD2 went to a 38DD when I was pumping and nursing full time.  They are back down to a 38d so I am hoping they don't get crazy this time around.

  • I didn't put on maternity clothes until about 18-20 weeks with my first pregnancy. For some reason I had this weird drive to go as long as I could without having to wear them. I don't know why though, because the second I put them on...my life changed for the better! I'm 11+1 right now, and I still haven't had to pull them out, but I will definitely be wearing them before 18 weeks this time! I let my sister borrow all of mine, and she's due in about two weeks, so I should be getting them back in the very near future!
  • Haha! I decided about three weeks ago (I'm 10wks 3days now) that I just wasn't going to wear pants any more to work. I have worn only dresses for the past three weeks. I went and bought some maternity shorts for the weekend last week and got a couple of maternity dresses that I hope can grow with me. Also, I'm very concerned about boob issues. I'm already busting out of my 36 DD. I have a feeling bras are going to get expensive!

  • @aimsforyou2014 yes I spent so much money on bras with DD. I would recommend not buying a ton in a certain size. I ended up being like 3 or 4 different sizes last pregnancy.
  • I am far too bloated for my normal pants at 8 weeks. I haven't worn anything but leggings in weeks. I bought a bunch of leggings and tunics and I think I'll be set for several months at least.
  • None of my shorts or jeans are fitting, so I bought some more shorts in 2 sizes larger. Also got several maxi dresses in all the colors (love those things). Unfortunately, I do not have any good maternity stores near me, so I will have to wait until I visit parents/in-laws in a few weeks.

@aimsforyou2014 I can completely relate to the boob issues - I swear I went from a 36D to a 36DD overnight. I may have to live in my sports bras if these things keep growing anymore. Where did you go to get maternity clothes?

  • @melsue18 With DS, I think I felt more conspicuous at week 8 than week 13. For me, the bloat went away before the belly started and like some others mentioned, I had this urge to wait as long as I could. Man, they felt amazing though when I finally caved.
  • I'm nine weeks and pregnant with my 4th.  I've just been wearning yoga pants that told down and maxi dresses that I can grow with this summer.  I don't want to spend on maternity since I won't be big until fall/winter.

Any long legged moms to be here? I wear long pants and I'm worried about being able to find maternity pants long enough for me. Any ideas where to shop?!

Also, I've heard about belly bands. Are they helpful? If so, when did you start wearing them? Do they just help your clothes fit longer?
  • @michwich-2 5'10" here, I found some tall pants at kohls online!

Me! I'm 5'11" and wear a 35" to 36" inseam. I've found "Long" jeans at Motherhood and have ordered a pair of Gap jeans off eBay, but neither are long enough for my legs. Long Tall Sally has a couple styles of skinny jeans, but I prefer bootcut.

Right now I've got my eye on RG Maternity, a website specializing in tall maternity clothes. They have bootcut jeans that look really nice and come in 36" or 38" inseams, but they're out of my size at the moment.

What styles are you looking for? Jeans? Dress pants? Athletic pants?

@Peepster Thank you so much!! You are very helpful! We are close in height! I'm 5'10 and have an average-sized torso. I'm all legs! If she so hard finding regular clothes long enough, so I started to worry about maternity clothes. I really appreciate you sharing stores with me. I'll have to look into them.

I get cold easily and imagine I'll need pants of all kinds for the winter.
  • Thank you tall ladies! I'm 5'9" and was thinking about the pants issue. Bought a belly band though and its amazing!!!! Will be sure to check out the stores mentioned as I progess.
  • I made a rookie mistake and bought a different brand of maternity pants (just one for now) than the one I'd tried on, because the lines were crazy long when I found the pants I bought. Both were XL, but the ones I bought fit differently in the thighs and don't quite fit right.

I'm hoping that they'll loosen up, as they're fresh out of the wash, but I opted to wait until a day I'm not at work to try to break them in.

I'm also planning to just live in comfortable dresses and skirts this summer, and buy some jeans later.
  • No maternity clothes for me yet (FTM, 10w1d) but I think a new bra will come first. Unfortunately I already struggle to find bras. I'm a 32 DD normally so I can't go into any old store and buy anything...I can't imagine what this is going to be like!
