Glucose Challenge Test / Gestational Diabetes

Re: Glucose Challenge Test / Gestational Diabetes

  • I heard back from the doctor this week that because I failed the 1 hour the first go around (and then passed the 3 hour) I only have to redo the 3 hour. Granted, I still have to do the three hour but I'm happy to not have to do step one when we know I'll be doing step two already. My OB wants me to go in anytime after 26 weeks so I'm going to go in 06/12 at 26+5.

  • @wineren Hope it goes well! If I had to do it over again I would ask to lie down in an vacant (and dark) examination room right after drinking the glucola. Being in the waiting room made me feel faint (and the blood draws didn't help) but I def felt better as the test progressed, strangely, which the nurse said was common...  and bring a high protein snack for right after!
  • I've still got 2 more weeks till mine, but something neat that my doctor has started doing is they gave me the drink to take home and keep in my refrigerator ahead of time. Then the morning of my test, an hour before, I take the drink, and not have to wait in the lobby for an hour.
  • Mine is scheduled for this week on Friday and my MW's does the same as @heatherlynn321. They gave me the bottle last appointment and told me to take it an hour before my next appointment. I don't think I'm too worried about it yet though, obviously I just hope it goes well and I don't puke it up or something before I make it there.. lol
  • @heatherlynn321 my doctor does it that way too. My test is on the 23rd.
  • @margareth The lab at my hospital where I do the three house has private rooms with hospital beds in them for people to hang out who are doing long tests :-) They told me I could nap last time - although I definitely did not lol
  • @daisy62103 Congrats!!!! That must feel amazing!

I have been DREADING this test.... not even so much because I'm scared I'm going to fail but, because when I took it with my son I was shocked at how awful I felt. I had zero sickness that whole pregnancy and still when I drank that drink I was SWEATING BULLETS, and shaking from how bad I was fighting not throwing it up. I could not believe how bad it effected me but, I feel so much better reading the comments here and finding out a lot of people have weird reactions.  This time I can barely even mentally process the thought of most food and drink even to this day not to mention the heartburn from all that syrupy liquid... blech! so, needless to say I'm super anxious.

  • @OmSweetOm are you taking the 1hr or 3hr?

  • @LosAngelesMama Just taking the one hour. I just do not respond well to that drink for some reason.  :s

  • @OmSweetOm I hope it's not as bad for you this time. I had terrible MS the first 4 months and continue to be nauseous most days. I also HATE certain sweet drinks right now. So I was having terrible anxiety about drinking the glucola as well. But I was happily surprised that I felt just fine. My doctor told me I didn't have to fast so I ate eggs an hour before my appointment. Maybe it helped to drink it on a non empty stomach. FX the test is easier for you this time.

  • @OmSweetOm You might consider asking them if you could do apple juice, gummy bears, or something along those lines. I'm 99.9% sure I just had to drink apple juice my first go around with the midwifery center in CO. If the drink makes you that sick, I'd really hope they'd let you do an alternate option.

I'm sure it doesn't hurt to ask - but the glucola is a specific amount of sugar (50g). Sure, apple juice and gummy bears have sugar, but not a controlled amount - so the reading of how well your body metabolized the sugar is going to be "wrong" (therefore potentially useless). The one hour test is "just a screen" so it might be enough to determine if your body is metabolizing sugar at a decent rate, but it's not going to give you a hard and fast number.
The midwifery center just had me drink fruit punch. It still has a "controlled amount" of sugar, because you consume a specific serving size (in my case they gave me two juice boxes to drink an hour before my appointment). I was also advised to go ahead and eat breakfast - a protein rich one - about an hour before having the drink. I think not having an empty stomach helped a lot to curb any potential side effects to having all that sugar in my system.

  • I just scheduled my second 3-hour glucose test. Already took the whole day off because it was so awful last time. At least I get to skip the 1 hour. It seems clear that I would just fail it again.

  • I just drank the juice and I'm waiting on the results now but am I the only one who thought it was delicious!?! I got fruit punch and it tasted like koolaid with extra sugar :) the lab tech looked at me like I lost my mind haha.
  • @Breath_Easy92  I had the (clear) fruit punch at my 16w test, and I thought it didn't taste bad at all.  However, I felt pretty sick not too long afterwards.  I had no problems with it with DS1, and I had an orange drink that time.  I have my second GD test in a few weeks, FX I pass that one too!

  • Just an FYI for those unsure if they want to drink the Glucola.  There are other options so do not be afraid to ask your doctor/ midwife.  I chose not to drink the Glucola for personal reasons so I am now currently monitoring my own blood sugar at home 4 times a day for two weeks for my midwife to review.  Which I thought was going to be awful but I am surprisingly learning a lot about how my body processes different foods.
  • they don't even do the glucose test where I live (in Europe).....just finger pricks at regular appointments.....

  • @Becky012016 like I said my midwife gave me the option to do it.  I really thought it would be as simple as some of the other ladies that were able to drink apple/ orange juice with the same amount of sugar but to my surprise she would not let me.  So she said they offer two options. 1- drink Glucola or 2- self monitor for two weeks.  So I took my doctors advice and chose to self monitor.  My advice was to ASK your doctor for other options.  I was not giving medical advice.

@ColoradoHiker brought up a good point about how the sugars in juice and glycola are not the same. Wanna bust out some science for us there lady?! I feel that was really relevant.

  • Interesting how you make assumptions regarding my life @souptin.  Let me break it down for you...
    1. I am not an antivaxxer.  (I do not and will not get certain vaccines like the Flu, HPV or chicken pox and will not give them to my child if he is sick only at a wellness visit.  And I will not get vaccines during pregnancy.)
    2.  I do use essential oils but not daily. ( Is there a problem with EO's now in a world where antibiotics and other prescription meds are given out like candy and negatively affecting us before trying an alternative solution that just might work?)
    3. I say no to GMO's that have been proven unsafe and are banned in other countries and eat locally and organically as possible just like our Grandmothers and Grandfathers did.

I strive to live as healthy as possible and I am so very sorry that for some reason that seems to really get to you.I am not perfect.  Not even close but I do not have to follow every medical rule just because "science"? Like "science" has never been proven to be wrong?

  • I posted my video of my experience toward the beginning of this thread, but I really want to say that the glucose test is really not at all as bad as it's hyped to be. I had myself worked up into tears and an anxiety attack over having to do the 3 hour test, then felt like an idiot when it turned out to not be anywhere near as bad as I thought it was going to be. The drink tasted pretty good, just insanely sweet. I did not throw up or feel terrible (I did feel kind of "gross" for the first hour, but not anything that wasnt totally tolerable). Take a book or something to keep your mind occupied. I swear the anxiety and worrying about it is way worse than it really is.

@wyomama0427 I too would be interested in the science. I assume juice is fine as long as they are monitoring the specific amount of sugar ingested. Considering that my medical provider doesn't use glucola at all (they just use boxed juice that you can seriously buy at the grocery store), I didn't realize there was a significant difference or specific recommendation to use glucola.  I actually didn't even know that glucola was a thing since I've never had to do it. Dr. Google obviously isn't the best resource, but since we're talking about it, I'm curious enough now to go looking ;)

I think it was @jena333-2 who mentioned the difference in sugars, so maybe she could help spread some light for us?

ETA: I went back and read the previous thread that discussed glucola. Between that and a cursory google search, I have a better understanding now about why it is the go-to for the GD test. I still trust the recommendation of my provider, but

  • @Becky012016 my doctor was actually the first person to tell me about using essential oils for my sinus headaches.  She suggested that I tried peppermint oil on different parts of my face, neck and head to relieve pressure.  So I guess taking my family physicians advice was wrong and against "science"?  Which here where I live close to Cleveland we have the Cleveland Clinic which is now offering alternative medicines to their practice. Also, I guess those of us on here that chose to use Chiropractors and Acupuncturists as alternatives to mainstream medicines are crazy also?

Actually, EOs are not regulated for quality or standards afforded to real medicines so you're probably just using unidentifiable chemicals and toxins masked by a hint of peppermint smell. But sure, tell me rigorously tested and supported scientific conclusions are fake science.

I can't see anything but this right now lmao
  • No @OmSweetOm you did not.  This discussion was actually started last week on another thread because I posted how I was choosing not to drink the Glucola because of the chemicals and dyes that are in it.  Which is my personal choice but got some in a real tissy over it.

Nobody is in a tissy over what you choose to do to your body. For real. But don't tell everyone it's unsafe just because google says so.
  • Glucola contains unnecessary additives for color/taste that, while not well studied in the US, have been banned in other countries.  Such as the most controversial BVO.  Please read up below.
