POTD: Nursery Furniture

edited June 2017 in November 2017 Moms
Kind of a selfish poll but I'm genuinely interested in hearing everyone's plans! When are you buying/setting up basic nursery furniture?

Not specifically waiting for the completion discount, but baby's basically getting a crib in the guest room.  We're using a changing pad on top of the pre-existing dresser so no changing table.  Just waiting cause we haven't cleared the space the crib's going to go yet... (it's currently my sewing corner).
ETA: We currently have a rocker/glider in DD's room so that'll just get scooted over.

  • Other...we already have the stuff we are using.  The crib will be set up in our room and we have a changing table/shelf that will act as storage.  All that needs set up is the crib which we'll do in the next few weeks.  I've already gotten the other big items like the pack and play, swing, and highchair.  No nursery for us lol

DS1 is 7.  DD is 1.  DS2 is coming in late April.

We decided that when we transition baby out of our room, he/she will share a room with our daughter. We were team green with her so the nursery is gender neutral - mint and grey - and ready to go. Just waiting to decide if we will get a second crib or a toddler bed. Baby will start off in pack n play bassinet.

We are planning to move early next year so they may get separate rooms then if sharing isn't working out.
  • I chose other. No nursery for us either. We have a lot of rearranging and decluttering to do between now and then, but it doesn't really involve any nursery furniture. I do need to decide if I'm going to set up the crib or pack n play to use at first.

  • We bought the crib yesterday. I'm not sure if we will put it up right away when it is delivered or not. DH is currently in job transition and I know how long and frustrating the first one was to put together so he might start on it for a project before he goes back to work.

Now to wait to see if/when the dresser will go on sale.
  • I chose SS. I think we're getting an actual toddler bed for DS and will use the crib we own for #2.

  • Chose other because we actually haven't bought much for Honeybee. We're waiting to go shopping with my mother in law. His parents said they'd buy us all the things we need for our nursery so we don't have to go get it ourselves. It's their first grandkid and Honeybear is an only child, so they're going to go nuts and then we won't need anything for the next one.

  • Another SS. Baby will get DD's old crib. That's the only thing baby is getting, since he or she will be living the life of luxury in our walk in closet. We're in a small apartment for the next year and that's the only space that will work well. I'll worry about a bedroom for #3 once we move into a house again.

  • FTM so we are starting from scratch and an empty room that has been waiting to be the nursery. We are painting this weekend, if we ever agree on a color! Then we will start picking out furniture.

I have my nursery furniture already - I just need to do some touch up decorating if it's a boy and more if it's a girl.

Also my nursery is currently set up as we never took it down (DS 2 moved to a bed in another room this time last year).

  • We're remodeling our upstairs, where the nursery will be.  So we're waiting on that.  My DH or grandpa is going to make the crib.  I found a plan that has all the requirements for a crib and it would be about $150 cheaper than the crib that I want.  I also love having something that was hand made.
  • I chose other. Not really sure what you'd consider it but we are just buying things and setting them up as we go along. I like to thrift and redo stuff myself. So I'm searching for dressers and a glider now but not in a hurry. Eventually I plan to buy a new toddler bed for DD (16 months old now) so we can put her crib in baby's room.
We aren't in a hurry and really aren't planning on buying much since this is #2 and we'll have had 2 in 2 years.
Although I've already had DH bring in the swing and RNP and PNP from the garage.  ;)
  • This baby is going into a crib in our room until we move in February. We are purchasing a crib this month, but probably will not set it up for a few months. I say that, but I bet my other kids will beg to set it up and get the bedding asap because they are ready for their sibling to be here!

  • @Furmommy handmade crib! I love that!

  • I know what I want and I'm waiting to find it. I really wish the person I sold my set to a couple years ago would decide they don't need it anymore and sell it again because I loved it. I had a dresser that was built perfect to use as a changing table and a matching crib. Only reason I had to get rid of it is because they didn't make the conversion set for it anymore and DD was too big for a bed. She was too big for a toddler bed soon enough so I still would have had to sell it as I was living with my parents.
  • We pretty much have all the furniture already - my cousin has twins and only one of them will sleep in their crib anymore so she's passing the other one along to us, along with a changing table and glider.  The problem is, the room the baby will be going in has been kind of a catch all and our dog kennels are currently in there so we have to finish redoing our basement so we can get stuff moved out of there.  Then we can get in there and get baby's room set up.   (I'm so ready for that project to be over!)

  • I chose "buy now, set up now" but in reality we have our nursery ready to go because DD, 16 months, is in there now. We are setting up her bedroom though we don't plan on transitioning her into it until baby is 3-6 months old and out of the bassinet in our room, because we don't want her to feel like the baby is kicking her out. This will give her time to get used to the new room/new bed before baby and the transition.

  • I'm just waiting till later, we only need a crib and a glider. We still have everything else from ds. Haha poor ds never did buy a crib for him. Just borrowed one for the few months that he was in one since we traveled most of his first year of life. The pnp made more sense most of the time. The one I am buying for this one will be convertible so that it can just grow with them. But we won't set it up for till probably October or November since baby will be sharing a room with DS and I will have to move a couple things around.

Waiting another couple of months... literally just going to get another crib and toss it in DDs nursery, which is pretty gender neutral anyway. The little little ones will be sharing a room.
  • We technically don't need to buy any furniture other than a pack and play for going places we were blessed to receive hand-me-downs from my 2 SILs as they are done growing their families now. Mainly the only things we need to get are more decoration related.
  • Unsolicited advice for you guys.  @maximumeffort reminded me.  If you are getting a convertible crib, buy all of the conversion pieces now.  I'm glad we did because the conversion rails weren't available when we needed them.  I hated unsolicited advice but can honestly say, I'm glad I listened to that one.
Thank you! I'm getting a convertible crib and I didn't even think to do that!

  • @mariposa_767s GOOD ADVICE. Tracking down the toddler rail was a PITA.

  • Baby will be on our room in our halo bassinet for six months and then will move into the nursery. DS will move into a big boy room and use the queen guest bed with toddler rails.
  • We also have a convertible crib so right now my son is in the "toddler bed" version of the crib and When baby needs it it will be a regular crib again. Later on, it will be a queen bed.
  • We're very consciously trying to keep the accumulation of furniture and items to a minimum. We're planning to just add a crib to the bedroom, where a guest twin bed and dresser already live. I'll clear the picture frames off the dresser and replace them with a changing pad.  My husband and I both inherited the rocking chairs our mother's used when we were babies. I'm not sure I want to change much about the decor of the room- it has beautiful photographs and art on the walls. Ok, so it is not "nursery" or kid typical, but I like it. Hubs' birthday is in a few weeks, and he asked his parents for the crib we picked out as his gift. That'll be it.
  • We bought a convertible crib because it had Baby Bargain's blessing and it was a good price, not because it was convertible. We want four so we plan on just using it as a crib through the youngest (barring any safety recall issues). Any STM thoughts on this? I'm hesitant to buy extra stuff because of apartment storage space and because we will be making a big move to a new state and house around the time this LO is ready for grade school.

  • @duchessofcambridge that's a good plan if that's what you're going for.  DS had a convertible crib that was expanded to the full/queen.  When we moved, he wanted a more kid friendly twin bed, so this baby is getting his old crib.  There is nothing wrong with passing a crib down from child to child and then letting the older one(s) choose the décor of their "big kid bed".

DS1 is 7.  DD is 1.  DS2 is coming in late April.

  • I'm an other. We are remodeling the bedroom downstairs which is currently the guest room and where DS2 sleeps in a crib. We will move him up to share the room DH and I are in now with DS1, move DH and me into the remodeled guest-soon-to-be master bedroom, and this new little girl will get the boy's old room which was decorated as a neutral nursery 5 years ago and is still in very good shape. We will have a busy summer.

  • We are using furniture we already have except the crib and chair. We purchased the chair on sale last weekend and my Mom bought us our crib already. We are converting a low dresser into a changing table.

  • @DuchessOfCambridge I think that makes complete sense. The one thing I hate about the convertible crib I have (and the ones my friends have) is that they make the bed SO high off the ground once you convert to a full/queen. My preschooler's bed is, no joke, more than 3 feet off the ground. She uses a step stool to climb up and I think it's a little ridiculous. When we move in July, I am putting her box spring and mattress right on the floor and taking the frame back to convert back to a crib for baby.

  • @DuchessOfCambridge we did the recommended convertible crib babybargins suggested as well

  • @jess0211 the Davinci Kalani? We got the 6 drawer dresser too. Can't wait to set it up! Well, maybe not the crib just yet, seems like extra stuff to dust for the next 23andchange weeks

  • @DuchessOfCambridge yup! We haven't set it up yet but did take it out of box to make sure it wasn't damaged since the box sat out in the rain bc UPS refused to put it on the covered front porch and just left it sitting in the driveway.

  • My MIL offered us a crib when we announced. I was so excited. Turns out it was my niece's drop-side crib from 20 years ago and has so many recalls she can't sell it at a garage sale. We are now back to the drawing board. In my current unable to make a decision state we are having trouble deciding on stuff, maybe it'll be easier once we paint (if I stop panicking over picking the wrong color) I don't want to spend more than $200 on any one piece, and even that is going to kind of break the budget, but I get nervous about buying used cribs, I jus toicture safety issues if someone else put it together and it's been abused by another child. Am I silly?  I don't mind a used dresser or chair (of course the chair I love is $400 so that will never happen!)

DD2 doesn't use her crib anymore so that will be for baby. It's all set up in the nursery but the front part broke off (where the nail goes in) so we'll have to have someone handy fix it for us. We had a changing table that our neighbors gave to us but we gave it away thinking we were done having babies. Oh well, we lived without one for DD1.  ;) We painted the nursery white for DD2 but will probably add an accent wall at least for baby! I want to wait until we know the sex though. If it's a boy I plan on going all-out because it will be a new experience!

*SS* I have all the big things (crib, dresser, rocking chair) from my DD for this LO.

  • I chose waiting a couple more months. We will be turning the guest bedroom into LO's nursery. We are starting from scratch with furniture. This will be our last child and the first girl so I plan to decorate her room with a feminine touch. After 2 boys I'm ready for some girly touches. We will probably buy the nursery furniture after my 20 week AS.

  • I have everything passed down to me except a dresser and glider, so we need to just pick up the crib from MIL's house and swing from DH's coworker's house. I spent the month in between my MC and this pregnancy getting the room ready. I'm about halfway done. I want to get a new closet organizer put in and get rid of the desk and dresser already in there.
It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most...not where you live, or what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes... There's no dollar sign on a piece of mind, this I've come to know! *ZBB*
