@MississippiCatfish My a/s is on June 16th when I'll be 19+0. They actually had me go 5w between appointments (so I was in at 9w, 14w) and they seemed happy with this schedule, so it seems odd to me that your tech "might not be comfortable" unless I'm missing something? I thought that the a/s could happen anytime between 18-22w?

  • @car1a I think that's the general rule, but depends on the practice. My neighbor just told me her practice just changed and absolutely will not do them before 22 weeks! Which seems crazy since 20 is the "standard." I think I'm just annoyed because it's to the tech's discretion when I feel it should be up to the MD. My husbands travel actually just changed so that we *can* do it at 20 weeks, and I'm debating whether to just reschedule so I don't end up with a grumpy tech who goes along begrudgingly. So weird that you have to think about these things with healthcare!

@MississippiCatfish Agreed - annoying! Has anyone else been advised to not schedule their scan until later? Now I'm wondering if mine might be too early - I don't want them to miss anything important, especially since this is the last scan my practice typically does.

  • @car1a - If they can't see something, they'll just have you come back for a quick check of that one thing.

  • @MississippiCatfish @car1a interesting, the receptionist at my OB scheduled it for me and she picked when I'll be 18+2, literally the earliest possible after I turn 18 weeks (my ticker change is Sat). Granted, MFM does all ultrasounds and they are literally the waiting room right next to my OB, but it's not up to the techs when appointments happen.

  • @car1a I think every practice is different. My OB won't schedule people before 20 weeks, even though the paperwork says anywhere between 18-22 wks. I guess if they can't see everything they need to, they'll just send you back for a follow up.

@MississippiCatfish 22 weeks seems crazy late!
  • My OB does 20-22 weeks. Mine is scheduled for 21 weeks. Still 5 whole weeks away... waiting is so hard!

Good to hear that they'll just schedule an additional scan if they cannot see something - I'm also happy to be aware of this possibility so that I can push for it in case anything seems unclear. I still haven't yet researched what they'll be looking for during the scan - need to do my homework! I'm guessing heart/brain functioning (we already know the sex from NIPT, which is what I keep hearing being referenced with the a/s!)

@RiverSong15 I think that mandating 22 weeks seems strange, too! My doc said that around 23 weeks, there are systems that become more difficult to visualize because of normal development. So having just a one week window seems strange!

  • Mine is that the all the maternity capris I have are full panel. They are lent to me from a friend, so I am thankful for that, but they won't stay up! I'm hoping that as belly grows the panel will have something to hold on to!
  • @car1a - they measure pretty much everything. From heart chambers to limbs to kidneys to, well, everything. They check to make sure the heart beat looks normal and the blood flow through the cord looks good. Mine have usually taken 45-60 minutes, though my sister just had hers and it was 20 minutes.

  • My practice does the scan anywhere from 18 to 20 weeks. Mine is scheduled for 18weeks 4 days. I can't imagine waiting till 22 weeks! I also can't imagine it being upto the ultrasound tech!! How do they have any say in what my doctor wants?!
  • This is a super petty bitchfest, but DH working so many hours means I'm bored!!! Only having a 2yo to keep me company all day is getting old.
  • @BayCamp I understand the loneliness that goes with that! But I can't say I'm bored per se! My housework keeps me incredibly busy, but it's not always fun!
  • @cmessamore I've been slacking so much on the housework. I guess I could do more and be less bored lol  :D

@BayCamp I got our Maltese because DH works so much I was lonely. And then when it took us more than 6 months to get pregnant, I convinced him to get a 2nd dog. I was working on convincing him for a 3rd the month I got pregnant haha.

  • @slaven this reminds me of one of my favorite (pre-children) quotes by Alyssa Milano!

  • @BayCamp I hear you! I feel like DH is always working and DD1 is either at school, with her Dad or busy.... just me and the 2yr old and 2 dogs.

@slaven We always joke we have one dog per kid..... new kid so.... new dog?? We almost got a puppy a few weeks ago. It'll probably happen.

@am+mommy the only thing that stopped us was Army stuff about how many pets you can fly back to the U.S. with you and number of pets allowed in housing.
