  • Have any of you guys switched from cable to a streaming service? We want to cut the cord, but aren't sure about what service to use, thinking of going with Directv Now because we would be able to get hockey games.

  • @KariAnn323, we haven't had cable for years. We use Hulu and we have Netflix. DH is a big baseball fan so he takes out a yearly subscription to MLB but even paying for all those it's cheaper than cable.

@KariAnn323 - another good option is sling tv. They have some options that have regional fox sports channels. We are big STL Blues (hockey) and Cardinals (baseball) fans and the vast majority of their games are on Fox Sports Midwest. We get free cable right now through our apartment, but we will definitely do sling tv when we buy a house.

We would likely do the Sling Blue option: https://www.sling.com/service

@KariAnn323 my ex used to do that: Hulu, Netflix, and anything he wanted to rent on iTunes. He figured, per month, even renting literally anything he wants to watch on iTunes would still be cheaper than paying for cable. He also owned 0 DVDs (for the same reason: that the cost of creating a library would outweigh the benefit).

@KariAnn323 We used a streaming service on Playstation (sorry I don't know the name) for awhile but it was super difficult to navigate. At least for my not tech savvy self. We still have Amazon streaming, Hulu and Netflix which is what I watch about 90% of the time. I think if it wasn't for DH I could get away with just that and HBO go. But he loves surfing the channels looking for random things.

Edited to add: Apparently it's playstation vue: https://www.playstation.com/en-us/network/vue/

  • @KariAnn323  we recently got an Amazon Fire stick, you can add a bunch of "apps" to it to get almost everything including NBC sports and Fox sports (we haven't completely gone streaming yet because of Soccer) Perhaps something like the Roku or Fire stick/Fire TV would be an option. Along with Hulu/ Amazon Prime Video/Netflix.

Re streaming: I'm the same as @cricket648, we have a Roku and pay for some apps, use my parent's cable password for others, and have an antenna for the major channels.

AFM, I don't like the fact that fast food places have now added the calorie count on their menus. I'm well aware that going to McDonald's or Taco Bell is a bad health choice already and having the calorie count right there just rubs it in. If someone is health conscience enough to count calories they're either not going to fast food places or have already looked up the calories to choose the best option for their diet. I don't see how having the calorie count up there is good for business. I am, however, okay with it at a place in which the calories are not available online, like a sporting event.

@JJMNO1616 - I saw that! And that's about right for us in tornado alley!
@KariAnn323 - I have a roku TV that has a lot of apps you can choose from, many of which you have to pay for. DH is a sports fanantic, so I haven't convinced him to cut the cable cord, but I know there are options on sling that might work for him. Need to spoonfeed the change to him.
@justkeepswimming8 - The calories were added to fast food menus in an effort to curb obesity that is rampant in lower-income families. That's the idea, anyway.

Eta because I wasn't done talking.

  • Who was talking about allergies? The future is near (ish)! https://www.iflscience.com/health-and-medicine/lifelong-protection-from-severe-allergies-could-be-possible-with-new-treatment/

    @vflux33 (I don't remember who else... I am sorry...)
  • @justkeepswimming8 @pebbledam Yeah, I get that it's annoying, but sadly there are probably a lot of people who aren't aware how many calories are in fast food. Wasn't there a whole thing awhile back about how the salad dressings at fast food restaurants actually have more calories in some cases than the more obvious "fatty" items? Also lots of people live in food deserts and may not have really "chosen" to go to a fast food place over another place so much as just couldn't get to a grocery store.

@doxiemoxie212 That's awesome! Probably not going to work in our timeline unless I can wait till I'm 90 to have a cat again, but good to know! Also probably a much bigger deal for people with the more dangerous epipen-required allergies.
  • @justkeepswimming8 @pebbledam @vflux33 calorie counts were added to menus for any establishment that had more than 3 locations (I think?) in NYC around 2006. I don't eat fast food (hard to when vegetarian, lol), but I remember I was highly alarmed when I found out I had been eating a 700 calorie cookie (small, I might add) from Starbucks as a snack fairly regularly.

I think the other element is that restaurants sort of have to adjust their menu to have more healthy options. Sure, plenty of their customers won't care, but a lot will, and they will have to actually have lower calorie food items instead of just pretending to (as @vflux33 said, salads sometimes just appear to be healthier).
  • @elisek So I just checked out Sling again, and they FINALLY got CSN Chicago for our zip code. We're huge Chicago Blackhawks fans, and in the past Sling had considered us out of the "Chicago market" so we didn't get CSN Chicago (most Blackhawks games are on NBC Sports Net or CSN Chicago). However, NHL Network considers us in the "Chicago market" so all Blackhawks games were blacked out. What internet speed do you guys have? Comcast still will charge us a lot for internet, but overall it should still be the a lot cheaper than what we're paying now.

  • @doxiemoxie212 Sometimes people just like to steal things to get the rush of taking it... they don't even care what it is. I used to work in loss pervention at a department store and people would get caught taking the dumbest stuff. I think period blood bath mat tops the cake though.  :D

Guys, I'm working a 12 hr shift, we just ordered pizza for lunch and I ate approximately a crap-ton. I am now in that post food haze. Must stay awake. 7 pm cannot come fast enough.

  • @fishsticks-n-custard I got really into season 1 of Serial, have you listened to that yet? I've also heard that "Missing Richard Simmons" is oddly compelling. I hope work goes by quickly for you!!!
  • @looeeze I loved Serial season 1. I finished S-town a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed that one too. Did you listen to that? I listen to a podcast called "Crime Writers on..." which started as a commentary on serial in the beginning but evolved into this running commentary on all things pop culture. They mentioned "Missing Richard Simmons" on there too. Maybe I'll download some episodes. Thanks!

  • @fishsticks-n-custard someone here recommended "How did this get made?"  (Wish I could remember who it was to give them credit) It's 3 comedians discussing how some crappy movies have gotten made. They watch the movie and discuss it. People at the gym probably thought I was nuts because I was laughing so much at the one they did on Hackers.

  • @fishsticks-n-custard all the Crooked Media pods (pod save america, pod save the people, etc.), all The Ringer pods (the watch, jam session, etc.), and I really like Katie Couric's podcasts if the guest is interesting.
  • @fishsticks-n-custard I haven't listened to S-town yet but have also heard really good things about it. Never heard of Crime Writers On but sounds great. I also listen to Pop Culture Happy Hour on the NPR app, depending on what the episode is about.
  • @fishsticks-n-custard WTF with Marc Maron! Also Hidden Brain, Reply All, and Criminal are some of my favorites.
  • Oh oh oh oh oh and Revisionist History with Malcom Gladwell is sooooo good @fishsticks-n-custard
  • @kariann323 we're almost strictly streaming here. We have Netflix, Hulu and Prime, plus access to my parents' DirecTV credentials. If we can't find anything to watch in those options, then we look through the DVDs and Blurays that DH (and, to a muuuuuuch lesser extent, I) have accumulated over the years. I don't miss much about cable at all, just the ability to record stuff I want to see but can't when it's on. Oh, and Good Eats. I miss the heck out of Good Eats.

  • @poandhendrix - Netflix had some episodes of Good Eats awhile back. You should check to seeing it's still there.

@fishsticks-n-custard - I'd also recommend Invisibilia and Wait, Wait... Don't Tell Me!

They did! It was a glorious time to be alive! They have a collection of 20ish episodes pretty regularly, but I haven't seen any in a bit, and full episodes are insanely hard to find online. You'd think as popular as AB is, Food Network would sell DVDs.

  • @grnmtnmama HA! I love how big of babies men can be. I got a stomach bug a few years back the same day my dad was visiting.  DH (FI at the time) tried to convince me that I was just excited to see my dad.  I puked out a car window on the highway! I was yakking and had a fever for the entire weekend. Then a few days later he gets it and goes on about how he must have it worse than I did. LMBO... nope you're just a baby DH, a big whiney man child.

  • @grnmtnmama @catlady1215 I really like the first pint of halo top that I tried. It was peanut butter or peanut buttercup. Reminded me of homemade ice cream, but I have chocolate almond right now and it's just too sweet or something. I don't like it. It's going to take me forever to finish it. I really want to try the red velvet.
