February 2018 Moms

X-ray yesterday, surprise BFP today!

So, I got an x-ray of my back on Friday to check on my scoliosis. The tech asked if I could be pregnant and I said probably not since my period was due Saturday. (My cycles are like clockwork). So she takes the two x rays and I'm done.

My period didn't show at all today. So I took a pregnancy test just to see and it was positive. Needless to say, my husband and I were shocked! We tried to be careful but guess that didn't work.

So now I'm freaking out about this x-ray and if it did any damage to the baby.

Anyone else have experience with this or have any calming words? Thanks!

  • ***lurker*** Congratulations on your pregnancy! Well, regardless, what's done is done. If possible, I would try to reach out to the radiology department/tech and your doctor to find out exactly whay two x-rays you had performed and how much radiation their specific machine would have exposed you to. That way you have some actual facts you're working with, rather than just guessing or panicking. It's probably nbd bc the machines are so much lower dose than they used to be, but do take note of it - again, inform your medical professionals - and I would probably try to make a point to limit further xray/ionizong radiation exposure for the remainder of your pregnancy whenever possible. I'm not an expert by any means, but I'm pretttty sure you'd need a LOT of radiation exposure - think Chornobyl/ Fukshima etc - not like 3 seconds from a modern x-ray machine, before it starts causing serious concern. ;) GL

Thanks so much for your kind reply! I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow so I will definitely mention it to him. :)

Congratulations! I agree with the other comment, try not to worry and make sure to tell your doctor. I'm guessing this is something that probably happens pretty often in very early pregnancy when women still don't know they're pregnant!

Thank you! It went well. I live on a military base so I had to see my primary doctor first before getting referred to an OB. Anyway, he was very reassuring but told me to still talk to my OB. He even printed off a chart that showed the amount of radiation I received and said that I would have to get a lot of x-rays for it to be harmful. Fun fact: flying across the country gives you more radiation than a lower back x-ray. Who knew? Thanks for checking in! :)

Glad to hear you got some reassurance!
