  • Is baby lotion necessary?  I see that there's Aveeno baby daily moisture lotion...
  • Loading the player...
  • @margareth Depends on your baby. We used lotion after every bath and more often in the winter but we could see his skin getting dry. Some are more prone to it than others. It's good to have on hand

  • Good point -- thanks!
  • How many Aden + Anais blankets do you recommend getting?

  • @missyrosek depends on how often you do laundry. We had several and I felt like it was over kill. Maybe 3-5? Also, I preferred the used ones I got over the brand new, because they get softer the more you wash them and I think their quality has gone down.
  • Thermometers: do you have a brand you LOVE?

Pack n Play mattress: necessary? We're planning on putting baby in our PnP in our room for the first few months. We have the one pictured below, with the bassinet. Waterproof cover seems like a must, but an additional/thicker mattress as well?

  • Has anyone used the sleep sheep and can it be used in place of a regular white noise machine? A friend gave a travel sleep sheep as a gift and I think it's adorable, but wondering if I should get a regular white noise machine too, or if this'll do it. :)

I have no idea, but I think I remember hearing awesome things about this travel sheep!  Must go add it to the registry.

  • Sleep sack or swaddle? Anyone? :)

    So so many options!!
  • Re: my last post -- maybe those two things are the same? Obviously I'm confused! But halo sleep sack/swaddle... any recs?
  • Sorry to keep reposting, but maybe swaddling blankets like the ones by Aden and Anais are good enough? In other words, maybe the sleep sack/swaddle is not necessary... plus, I heard the Velcro can disrupt the baby... hmm
  • @margareth I've heard that different babies like different things, so I can't say whether your LO will like to be swaddled (whether with a swaddle outfit of some sort or a traditional swaddle blanket).

a sleep sac is generally like a wearable sleeping bag - loose and not intended for swaddling. Recommended until past 1yo I think so the baby doesn't sleep with loose blankets.

A swaddle of any sort restraining the arms should not be used as soon as your baby can roll over (or a bit before if they're showing signs) because they might roll to their front and then not be able to roll back without the use of their arms. Suffocation risk.

  • Thank you!

    Good to know...
  • @margareth I would skip swaddles and just get big muslin blankets. Once you figure them out, you can get a better swaddle anyway and baby can't outgrow the blanket like they can the swaddle. Plus they're really versatile for other uses too.

I use a rectal thermometer. I still use one with my 24 month old. I have a temporal scanner one and it's always off. When it's not a big deal I use it, but when his temp is 103-104 I want to know exactly what it is.

As for a mattress, I wouldn't buy a different one for the pack n play.
  • @jena333-2, FTM here, but a couple of moms I know and the Baby Bargains book recommended the Vicks egg-shaped rectal thermometer: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LY5KQVS?colid=4JG8L2D8B9M&coliid=I21L4ODMT1F1EV&ref=br_ADD_TO_CART_title_link. My friend said she liked it because the egg shape helps you know how far to put it in and makes it so you can't put it too far in.
  • Yes to swaddle blankets over velcro swaddles! We had both and we tended to use the blankets over the velcros for the first 3 months. It wasn't until my LO was trying to break out of the blanket swaddle that we did the velcro and then that only lasted two weeks until she was rolling.

After swaddling we put my daughter in the zipadeezee and at 13 months she's still in it for naps and nighttime. It's basically a sleep sack with arms and covers the hands. Amazing. Once she was in that, sleep over night went to 12 hours and my life was sooooooo much better!!!

This is the thermometer I have and I like it. It's super easy to use.

  • @mc123mc The zipadeezee sounds incredible!  Albeit hard to spell/pronounce!

I've heard really good things about the zipadeezee, also the Merlin suit! Like a baby Michelin marshmallow man.

  • I tried the zipadee zip, the Merlin, the halo. lol nothing worked to get my child to sleep. I'm going to try a woombie swaddle this time. My son could break out of any swaddle so at least this one zips. The Merlin was so awkward to nurse at night.
  • The merlin is way too hot for my kid. Since these babies are being born in the summer, I wouldn't recommend it.
  • My daughter will be two in two weeks, and we're due with our second this September. My biggest advice is to spend a little more on items that will get a lot of use/wear. We went "cheaper" the first time and lots of stuff I thought I could reuse I doubt I can.

    - Baby Jogger City Select. If you plan on having another kid within 3ish years it's TOTALLY worth the investment. I'm obsessed with ours.

a soft-structured carrier (we have a Tula, but I also love our Baby Bjorn)

    - MamaRoo

    - a good pack-n-play (I regret getting the Graco and wish I would've spent the money for an easier to use one like the Breeze or Lotus)

    - Wubbanub

    - Water wipes, even if they're just for the diaper bag  They clean hands, mouths, butts, you name it

    - Burts Bees burp cloths (the softest things on the world, and you don't want to be rough when you're wiping up spit up 3,000x a day

    - Covered Goods cover. We EFF but this cover was great for swings, car seat covers, and shopping carts! I'm planning to nurse our second so they'll pull duty as a nursing cover as well

    - Honest Company hand sanitizer spray and travel sized Wet Ones wipes. Perfect for restaurant tables, shopping carts, and dirty hands

  • @Laurabean34

    great list, thanks!

Curious, a nursing pillow didn't make the list? Maybe not necessary and doesn't work for everyone? I have the boppy but could exchange/return...

I have never used either nursing pillow I got for nursing (boppy or breast friend). I propped baby up in the boppy and used it for other things, it just wasn't helpful to nurse with. I used a combination of couch throws to get the proper angle to nurse from in the beginning.  I've also heard of people who use them like they are the best things ever created, so I think it's just different for everyone.
  • Hey All...just had my 1st shower this last weekend and a friend got me a gift I didn't know about. So I thought I would pass on the idea to other moms using or planning on using the dr browns bottles. Bottle Cleaner  It was cool with the end that sits int he vase to use to clean the little parts of the bottles (still need a tiny bristle brush though).

  • @Laurabean34 I have a lotus portable crib and it's awesome. My mom got it for us and it's so worth the money. We still use it for our 2 year old on trips. We have a 4moms pack n play for the house but we realized it was too bulky to take on trips.
  • @Laurabean34

    great list, thanks!

Curious, a nursing pillow didn't make the list? Maybe not necessary and doesn't work for everyone? I have the boppy but could exchange/return...
@margareth-2, I had a breastfriend that I used a lot for....like, 2 weeks. Then, not again. It may be worth seeing  if you can borrow one
  • @margareth-2 I used my boppy the entire time I nursed and I absolutely loved it. I thought it made positioning the baby so much easier and made my back not hurt.
  • Thanks for info on the boppy.  If not for nursing, it looks nice for tummy time and other positions!
  • @margareth-2 in my experience, some women love the boppy, some the breastfriend and some nothing. We liked the boppy for helping prop up your arm while bottle feeding and I preferred the breastfriend for breastfeeding. My lactation clinic was into the breastfriend.
