Cows milk transition

Re: Cows milk transition

  • Cam is fully on cows milk and fully on the sippy cup now, thankfully. It took my girls a while to transition to the cup.

  • We've completely transitioned to goats milk as of today. Hurray!  We're doing milk from the sippy cup 50% of the time and from the bottle the other 50%. Hopefully we will be 100% sippy cup soon. I'm still working on my patience with it. Lol.
Do you also drink goats milk? Charlotte still can't do dairy and I was thinking about almond milk. When I think of goats milk I think of this really sad goat we had that was a milk maid to all the baby goats whose bad moms wouldn't nurse them. One year my mom had 12 baby goats that she was bottle feeding. That poor milk maid, I swear her utters dragged on the ground.

Aww. Poor goat!  No, the rest of the family drink cows milk. I just felt that goats milk was a better choice so we went with that.  The Kabrita is powdered toddler formula and smells similar to regular baby formula so I think that's why the transition has been so easy for Ethan.
  • I guess I need to start transitioning to cows milk as well. I really wanted to make it to 1 year with no formula or cows milk but I'm not making much milk anymore and I know I need to start by mixing the milks together.

how long did it take you all to transition?

I'm planning our transition to cow's milk to be a month long process, adding 2oz every week to his formula until there's no formula left and it's all cow's milk. Honestly though, I think he'd be just fine with straight cow's milk now, he seems to like it. I just thought taking it slow would be a good route to go just in case. This week is our 1st week so it's 2oz milk + 6oz formula.
  • LO turns one tomorrow and he's only going to start transitioning to cow's milk, but we're running out of formula. I asked the daycare if they could give him cow's milk with his cereal to see how it works.
He's only taking ONE sippy cup. He hates everything else

After about a week of searching for a true Organic milk.. I finally found one!! At Target of all places. Also, H and my Mom think I am absolutely crazy for wanting Jack to have Organic milk.. It's super frustrating  :/
We did organic, hormone-free, etc, whole milk with DS even though neither my husband or I drink organic milk ourselves.  Our thinking was that milk is still such a huge part of their diet, so why not give him the best of it?  When it's less of a staple of his diet, then we can reconsider.  But when they're still drinking like 25-35oz/day we're going with the top of the line milk. (Our pedi also said whole milk until 2 years old, then drop to 1%.)

That said, I just started the transition to whole milk yesterday.  Maddie drinks 4-5 6oz bottles throughout the day, so I have been making it 4oz formula and 2oz milk.  In a few days I'll switch the ratio to 2oz formula/4oz milk, and go from there until we run out of formula (we're on the last container and don't want to buy more).  We're working on sippy cups but she doesn't like them very much, except to play with and bang around.
  • I have LO a small sippy cup of milk the other day at dinner just to see if she's like it or if we need to slowly transition her. She gulped it down no problem, but she did have a pretty runny poop the next morning. So don't be afraid to just go cold turkey if they'll accept it, but it may take a couple days (/weeks?) for their digestive system to adjust.

  • I'm thinking I'll go cold turkey starting the week before her birthday (so two weeks from now). Nadia dropped her mother morning bottle, so she's down to 20oz of formula a day. I'll switch her afternoon bottle to a sippy cup of milk with a snack, and a week after I'll switch her morning bottle to a sippy cup of milk before or with breakfast. I'll keep doing a bedtime bottle until we run out of formula, than transition to a snack and cup of milk.

I want her to like milk, but don't want her to get too much due to the risk of anemia if that's their main food source. Fingers crossed this goes as easily as most things have for her! She's my most easy going kid, I've become spoiled

I have been mixing half whole milk half formula for about a month. At his year appointment today he told me to finish formula and go straight to milk. I debated what kind I was gonna do but after a deep talk with my friend who is a nutritionist we decided to go with whole milk.

  • Today is LO's birthday. He has been receiving 2oz cow's milk in his bottle since last night, as the GI specialist told us to take it slow, no cold turkey with cow's milk. He's also getting his first plate of food from the daycare, since he now qualifies. They're serving pizza since the toddlers are having a party, so my husband is kind of wary since we've never given him much table food. I say go for it. He needs to start eating now.
Anyway, he's taken cow's milk okay.
