Prenatal Vitamins

Wondering what kind of prenatal vitamins everyone is taking. I'm a wuss when it comes to large pills, I could probably stomach a large soft-gel but I had bought one brand that when I opened up the bottle the smell alone made me gag! Needless to say that bottle went in the trashcan. So now I'm taking the Vitafusion gummy vitamins but I feel like I cant take a gummy vitamin seriously.

Re: Prenatal Vitamins

  • I am also taking the vitafusion gummy vitamins, and did with DS as well. Just be aware that they don't have iron! Your dr may recommend taking iron in addition to those.  However, I was told that the lack of iron does help with nausea in the beginning.

  • I'm actually taking a vitamin by Shaklee (my uncle sells it) it's just their daily vitamin but I compared it to prenatal vitamins and it stacked up, the only thing it didn't have was DHA so I just take that separate

  • @maueraa07 hmmmm Ill have to go buy some iron pills, maybe thats why I havent had any nausea yet?

@JuliaGoolia719 there are so many types its driving me nuts haha

  • My friend can't handle pills so she had a Costco bottle of Prenatals left over from her pregnancy that she gave to me. I would much rather take a gummy but I have so many of these so I'm sticking with them.

I'm using Target brand. There's a prenatal and a separate DHA (they came in a pack).

ETA: Pregnancy brain. I was taking Target prior to my BFP. I am now taking the two pack of One-A-Day Prenatal.

  • I take the gummy ones too :) with DD I started with the swallow kind , but same thing the smell was AWEFUL and after throughing them up a couple different times I couldn't take it and switched . These I can stomach and it has virtually everything that the swallow kind has so I'm calling it a win !
  • I take MegaFood Baby & Me. The good - they are top rated by an independent group, don't make me nauseous, and give me extra energy. The bad - they smell funny, are horse pill sized, and I have to take 4 a day. I'm going to take them as long as I can but I may have to find a back up if I have nausea/morning sickness more reliably.

    Here's a list of top vitamins - https://labdoor.com/rankings/prenatal-vitamins

Does anyone have experience with any others on the top 5 or so to know if they are gross?
  • I'm taking the Target brand kind. Last pregnancy taking prenatals in the morning made me gag so I took them in the evening instead.
  • I have the prescription form. We both have insurance through our jobs so I don't pay another for them. It's two pills a day, one in the morning 1hr before I eat and one at night within an hour of eating and they aren't too big. It's called preg-vit.
  • @zamora_spin 4 horse sized pills?!?!?!?!

I think I'll start a notebook for the baby, all the stuff Ive had to give up or do that I dont want to during pregnancy, and anytime they act up they have to go read it lol
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @zamora_spin I take the same ones! Definitely have to choke them down.
  • My last pregnancy I took Vitafol Ultra soft gels (prescription).  Mainly because getting them via a prescription was a heck of a lot cheaper than buying any others via retail.  I liked them because they are small (smaller than an advil liqui-gel to give perspective), don't have any smell or taste and didn't make me have any gross burps.  They have a nice level of folic acid, plant based-DHA and iron (and didn't make me constipated-like some iron supplements tend to do).

Assuming that I can still get them at a reasonable cost via prescription, that's the route I will be going again with this pregnancy.  My OBGYN office gives out samples of a variety of different brands to test out, and then when I picked the Vitafol my midwife gave me a enough of the sample packs to cover my first month-just to be sure I did well on them before I filled the prescription. :)

@zamora_spin I found the same website and went with the Zahler prenatal plus DHA! They have been great so far. I got a 3 month supply on Amazon and the price wasn't too bad. I have been taking them since 2 months before my BFP and they seem to help with my energy level (as well as DH's mild hangover last weekend!)  No morning sickness at all thus far (hoping that keeps up) but I do have to remember to take them twice a day.
  • @Shanski70 those sound great, Ill have ot look them up and see if my insurance covers them before I go to my doctor

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @miranda21037 here's a link to the company's website that offers a coupon so that they don't cost more than $18 out of pocket (incase your insurance doesn't cover them).  I don't know the details (how many times you can use the coupon or any special circumstances that it becomes void), but I think that's a reasonable price for them compared to the cost of other products on the market: https://activatemysavings.com/vitafol/

  • @kgtradd Thank you for the recommendation on the Zahler!

@miranda21037 I mean, they are about an inch long and they smell and taste bad and are not really coated at all. I choke them down by telling myself they are so f-ing good for me. On your book idea -

  • @zamora_spin hahahaha that happens to be one of my favorite movies! and I just watched it this past weekend :)

  • I was taking the New Chapter vits before I got pregnant and then switched to Garden of Life once a a day because the first ones were three times a day and I didn't trust myself to remember after I got pregnant, ha! Then I switched to Trader Joe's once a day prenatal because it has more folate and iron. I don't really know which one I like the best and will probably just switch between the three.
  • I tried taking the NatureMade with DHA last pregnancy, and I was gagging all the time. They are HUGE and stinky. I finally gave up and started using Target brand prenatal gummies, and that's what I've been taking ever since. I tried to upgrade to Whole Foods brand gummies, but all the ones on the shelf were months past their expiration...so that didn't inspire a lot of confidence.

  • I take Vitamin Code, a whole food blend.  The pills are average size, not big, but not small.  While it doesn't smell, last pregnancy it made my morning sickness worse.  So far it hasn't done that this go around.  I agree that gummies are much easier to take!  If that works for you go for it.

I take Rainbow Light prenatals because a midwife recommended them when I was expecting our first.  Rainbow light is number six on that list. The version I take is huge, but they also make a mini pill.  I prefer to swallow one big pill, instead of a few small ones. Bonus: They smell wonderful.
  • @PleaseSendPicklesNow Are they gel soft caplets? I think I can do a big pill if its easy to swallow and doesnt smell or taste gross. Is it weird if I ask if you can post a pic of the pill for size? lol
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @miranda21037 The one-a-day pill that I usually take is a huge, hard pill with no gel coating. They also make a slightly smaller capsule version (not the mini pill), that you take 4 of per day. That's actually what I have on hand right now, because I accidentally ordered the wrong version from Amazon last week. :( This is a picture of that capsule.

I've never tried their mini pill, but I figure it's got to be even smaller.
  • @PleaseSendPicklesNow hmmmmmmmm Ill stick with the gummies over 4 of those pills, those dont look terrible but the thought of 4 of them is what gets me :/

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @miranda21037 The Rainbow Light petite mini pill could be a good option, too. The Amazon reviews say it's easy to swallow, and the pictures show that it's pretty small.
  • I take #2 garden of life vitamin code raw pregnancy vitamins + #8 Nordic naturals prenatal dha from that vitamin ranking list! Love them... They don't smell and the iron  in the prenatal vitamins don't make me constipated.
  • I'm glad this is up because I just spent an hour at the health food store researching pills.. I looked at my prenantals and saw they DIDNT have DHA and my doc said to get some before 2nd tri.

So I got a DHA supplement to add in addion to prenatal.. I'm kind of nervous to start taking them. It's 600mg of DHA and pure 100% Alaskan Pollock. The brand is super granola and all natural/sustainable. I don't doubt they are quality, I just don't like taking new things. I'm kind of weird with pills in general and I sit and analyze any effects that come. I just hope it's not TOO much DHA if that's a thing?

    Wish th me luck!
  • Ugh Im disgusted with my gummies now, I basically hold my nose, chomp on them a few times, gulp them down and chase them with flavored seltzer water. I know they dont taste different then when I first started taking them but for some reason now they gross me out

  • Last time I took target brand gummies. They tasted so good. This time I'm taking the Target brand with the additional DHA pill. The gummies didn't have iron and last time I ended up having anemia at the end and, while I don't believe this caused this issue, I also had to have a blood transfusion after my c-section so I'm not risking taking anything that doesn't have iron. Also, last time the regular prenatals made me sick and it was because they had iron in them. This time, the same pills aren't making me sick so I'm going with it.

  • @sbishop426 I think you can buy DHA separate, mine has a two pill setup with the DHA here

I buy the cheapest prenatal vitamin at Walmart. :D I checked and it holds up against the recommended stuff (and will be double-checking that with my midwife here in a few weeks time). I take a separate DHA supplement, which I picked out on Amazon because it was (again) the more affordable option to meet our needs. I started taking both when I went off my birth control late last year.

I've been lucky in that taking my prenatals hasn't caused any particular nausea or aversion, though whoever wrote "burpless" on those DHA tablets is a filthy liar. When I first started taking them it was awful, but I've since started taking them with my coffee and keeping the pills in the freezer, and now I rarely have trouble with it. Either because I'm used to them or because of those things -- eh, who knows.
  • @miranda21037 I got to this point last time. I bought the gummies and loved them at first then even looking at them I wanted to puke. Much easier to pop a pill and swollow!
  • @BrandedCowgirl92 I think Im going to have to switch to pills. But I had bought some regular capsule pills nad when i opened them they smelled so horrible I tossed them instantly! I guess it will be a trial and error

  • @miranda21037 I have MTHFR so I have to be careful with the form of folate in my prenatal. Im taking Emerald Labs one a day and Honest Co DHA.
  • I finally remembered to pick some up last night. I got Target brand gummies with DHA & folate. They're lemon and raspberry-lemonade flavors and when I opened it this morning the smell was a bit much but the actual gummies were fine. I forgot to check for iron though...

  • I was taking vitamins before TTC, so it's just sort of all flowed together.  Right now I'm on a PNV, Iron, C, B, & Calc.  My doc wanted me to cut down on my sugar & carbs so I switched away from the gummies and it makes taking them everyday such a pain  :'(  I miss my adult gummies.
