MoM's of 1+ year olds

My boys just had their 1 year old check up the other day and it went pretty good.  The pedi said that by the time they are 15 months old they need to be able to recoginze 2 body parts.  So if I say Sam where is your nose he needs to be able to point to it.

She also said that they need to be able to say and know the meaning of 6 words by the time they are 18 months old.  Right now they say Mama and Dada, but really only know that Mama means me.  Maybe I'm just having a hard time with my babies turning 1, but 6 words seems like alot to me.

The crazy thing is that if they can't do this by 18 months we will have to have early intervention.  I really like this pedi, she is so much more pro active than the last one... but I still think that is a lot to learn.   Am I crazy?

  • I feel like the kids are learning new things almost daily. ?My dad has been working with them on nose for a while and they can both point to it now. ?It took Kenzie about 1 day to learn to stick out her tongue when we say tongue. ?I am working on nose, tongue, head, ears, and belly right now. ?I also heard that babies like to look at dolls and it can help with body parts, so we find bear's nose, etc every once in a while too. ?

I don't know anything about ei, but I would assume that there would be other indicators...not just the black and white of they know 6 words by 18 months or else.

Fwiw, my pedi didn't mention any of this at their one year last week. ?She asked if they were responsive to their name, recognized some words, pointed to what they wanted...

  • Try not to panic.  We have had EI involved for almost a year now b/c my daughter, Anna, has spina bifida.  We have always felt like EI says that the girls should be doing these advanced things next and we say, "no, way," but within a few months, they are doing it.

There is a huge difference between 12 and 18 months in terms of speaking and understanding.

Also, I'm not sure what state you are in but in MA, a pedi can't qualify you for EI.  The babies need to be evaluted and based on their ratings, how preemie they were, etc. - then it will be determined if they qualify and for what services.

  • My ped (who we are going to switch out of soon) is pretty laid back- and never mentioned any of those things at their 1-year appt.  I have started working with them on identifying body parts, and words and signs, but mine really only know mama and dada, and recently my daughter says uh-oh, but thats it. I think its too ealry to worry just yet- just keep talking to them A LOT and reading, and I'm sure they will be just fine:)
  • Some words that are easier for babies to learn are "Ball, Shoe, Dadda, Momma, hat, nose." Those are the ones my DS can say, it doesn't really sound like that... but that is what he is saying. My DD can't say all of those yet she just says ball, dadda, and momma. Every child is different, I wouldn't be that concerned if they aren't saying that many by then.
