Cribs and Bassinets

What did / do you ladies prefer? Were there any particular benefits to having one over the other? Any downsides you disliked?

We found an adorable antique wooden rocking bed that I am seriously debating buying for our nursery. It's bigger than most bassinets but not as big as a crib. Plus the shop has it listed for only $50 which is significantly better than the $250 convertible crib DH and I had been looking at.

What options are you all considering? Or what have you purchased?

  • DS has a crib in his bedroom but for the first 6 months he slept in an urbini bassinet (the little play yard with the bassinet insert in the top) right by our bed. I personally liked having him right next to me so I could just pick him right up lol #lazymomhacks
Same! We'll do the same with this one, too I'm sure. We used the pack n play with the newborn napper, but same concept.

  • My parents already bought a convertible crib for the nursery, but for the first few months, I really want to have a Halo bassinet by my bed. I am at risk for having to have a C Section, and the reviews I've read about the Halo sound like it is a life saver when recovering from one. And if I'm lucky enough to not have to have a c section, it will be great having him right there next to me during the early, frequent feeding nights.

  • We put DD in her regular crib from day 1.
  • DS was in a regular crib in our bedroom for about six months.  We didn't have room for a nursery, so he was in our room until we moved to a bigger place.  This LO will immediately go in his own room, in a crib.  We had minimal sleep problems with DS, and he started STTN when he went into a separate room.  Hopefully that is the case with this LO as well!

Our plan is to have a halo bassinet (the model with a little light in the side) next to our bed until he out grows it for night time, but also have a crib set up in his nursery for naps during the day, so hopefully the transition to sleeping there at night somewhere between six months and a year won't be too painful. We'll see how things actually pan out, but that's the game plan.
Literally the exact same thing we're planning, day naps, time line and all.

DD was sleeping on her own in her own room from the start, with very minimal problems. She REFUSED to nap in there during the day for months and basically only slept in the Rock & Play in the TV room with me. I have no idea why she was so anti-crib naps, but it took us awhile to get her napping in there.

same as @wyomama0427 for about the first 6 months she stayed in her basinet next to our bed. This was mostly for the convenience for when she woke up. We will be doing the same again.

  • We plan on using the Halo bassinet next to our bed for the first few months before transitioning to his crib in the nursery.  Both our bedroom and the nursery are on the second floor, so for napping, we plan on having a pack n play on the first floor.

  • I just have an ingenuity pack n play with the bassinet and sleeper at the top.  :) I had a crib for DD but she would never sleep it in so she ended up in the pack n play most nights anyway lol
  • Our house is pretty small and all the bedrooms are at one end so we are hoping to just put him straight into the crib in the nursery from the start.
  • The one thing my friend who just had a baby recommended was a Halo bassinet. We put one on our registry this weekend and I decided that while I plan on having a crib, if I don't get if before baby is born I won't be super bummed as long as I have a Halo.
  • With DS he slept in the bassinet part of the playpen until about 6 weeks and then went to his crib. We did naps in his crib from the start as well. We all seemed to sleep better once he switched to his own room

  • I was debating between a halo bassinet and a pack n play in the bedroom. I'm surprised more people aren't doing the pack n play at bedside. Idk what would be best.. I was told the changing table section is super helpful and you'll use the pnp later on anyway..

We have a bassinet and are going to get a cot and are going to see how it goes. However we were given the bassinet second hand so if it doesn't get used it's not the end of the world
  • @sugargirl1019 we still use our pack n play all the time. DS sleeps/naps in it when we go anywhere out of town. We've got an extra mattress that gives a little more cushion for when he got old enough to use it. I don't know what we'd do on trips without it. Folds up and goes under our bed when we're not using it.

And yes I'm up at 3:45am. Yay.

  • We also got a pack n play with napper/changer that we plan to use for the first bit for baby to sleep in our room. Our master is on the main floor, with baby's room upstairs, so this will also be out of convenience for me. Hoping to transition to crib before my maternity leave is over, but of course timeline will depend on how things go.

  • My situation is pretty much exactly the same as @MrsVP614. I actually really wanted the Halo basinet, but my mom had the pack n play from when my brother's kids stayed with her. And one of our friends told us how convenient the changing table part was.

  • I would love a halo bassinet but my mom bought us a pottery barn bassinet for DS so we will use that again. We also had the 4 moms pac n play in our room. The baby will be in our room for probably 6 months.
  • @Sugargirl1019 DS is 18m old and we still use the PnP all the time.  We use it when we travel to visit family, and it currently lives at my in-laws (who watch DS during the week) for naps.

Honestly, I never saw the point of the bassinets (for us).  We had a small apartment when DS was born, and with his crib in our room, it wasn't necessary.  But I EP'd with DS, and plan to do so with this baby, so having him in the room won't make a difference, since we'll have to get up for a bottle anyway.  Also, babies outgrow bassinets pretty quickly, and you just have another item to store.  If you're planning on getting a PnP anyway, and have the room in your bedroom for it, I would probably go that route instead.

I am struggling with this. Baby S will have a crib in her room but for sleeping in the beginning I feel so overwhelmed by the options. It seems the popular choices are either the Halo Bassinet or the Pack and Play with the napper and changing station. But then I've also read about some people loving the Rock and Play for sleep too?

The baby's room is right next to ours but I'll definitely feel more comfortable having her next to the bed at the beginning. We have the space for any of the options available, I'm just not sure what is best.

  • @Swazzle I recommend doing research on the RnP for overnight sleeping.  I know tons (and tons) of moms have used it for such, but I remember reading that there were some possible safety concerns.  I have heard that it's great for babies who have reflux.

I'll be doing a cosleeper this time instead of the pack and play. I thought the transition to laying DS back down and picking him up was way harder having to lift him over the side of the pack and play, and then laying him back down in his pack and play where you have to kind of pat their backs or rub them if they wake up, it killed my arm, it hurt so bad! My arm was always numb leaning over the side of that thing! Hopefully with a cosleeper I can just roll over and do side lying nursing and then roll back over to sleep (fingers crossed)

We will be using the pack n play in our room, and then hopefully crib for naps (although we have purchased a swing second hand, so we'll see what he likes when he gets here).

We got this PnP with the bassinet insert

ETA: Some of the reviews with the built in changing station say it's just way too low to be comfortable, you have to lean way over so it kills your back.
  • My sister is giving us her Halo bassinet which is barley used, and I'm planning on purchasing or registering for the newborn insert. Baby will stay in the room with us for at least 6 months. We're in an apartment and both work from home a lot, so we don't want to convert our office space into a nursery just yet. I just assumed he would nap in the bassinet as well, but after reading these posts, I may look into a Pack 'n Play to keep on the first floor.

  • @Swazzle- RnPs (as far as I am aware) are not meant to be used for sleeping overnight because of safety concerns. They also can't use them once they can roll over. We more or less had to quit cold turkey with DD in her RnP because she started rolling over very young. She napped in it all the time, but only when I was sitting with her. It sucks, because she was cozy as hell in that thing and slept like a log, but I wouldn't risk it if I was also sleeping.
  • We will have. PNP with the bassinet insert in our room and baby will sleep there for around 4 months then she will move to the nursery into the crib. Our 14 month old and the new baby will end up sharing the nursery so we are debating if we try to transition DD to a toddler bed or buy another crib for the nursery. Such a hard decision.
  • We actually got the same PnP with a bassinet insert as @jena333-2, after talking with several friends about what they liked best with their little ones. She'll sleep in our room for the first few months in that, but we'll be trying naps in the crib during the day and hopefully transitioning to her nursery full time around 6 months. You know, if all goes as planned...which it probably won't.  :D

I bought this bassinet from craigslist for 25! Then he will have a crib in our daughters room. I bought her crib for 60 its 4 in 1, at a garage sale. We will have to by the toddler converter though for 100 if we want to use it like that. Currently looking for a cheap mini crib to move him to when he is 6 months. If you feel ok with used you can save a lot of money!
  • I'm so jealous for people who have the halo. I tried to buy one on a BST site and it was a great deal and my husband said no. He didn't want my mom to be all upset because she bought me the super expensive pottery barn one for my first.

We love our Halo! Used it alllll the time. Super convenient and smart design. It was SO worth the money! Can't wait to break it out for #2!
  • Apparently I've been in the dark about this Halo basinet. This is #3 and I had no idea. It looks great but I will just use a regular, not so pricey one again. My daughter was in hers for 6 mths and my son was in his for 4 months. I just like them next to me for awhile!
  • We have pack and play on our registry, we also bought an ikea crib (which likely won't get any real use other than as a storage space for the first few + months), we are borrowing a rock and play, and also plan on borrowing a bed side sleeper, on our registry we also have a cosleeper/can be used in the bed side sleeper if baby need a bit more angled sleeping (if they have reflux issues)

Haha can you tell we are 1st time parents...
