@felix08 I'm a school SLP. They always make us do evals due in September and October in the spring and it's a pain in the ass. I know I'm going to want to know if they're making me change offices because nothing says I'm support staff like being shuffled to a new closet every year. If I need to pack my stuff, I'd like to know in advance.
@felix08 I actually plan on starting the year. (I taught till getting birth last time.) I am short on sick days, so every day counts! we are required to leave two weeks of plans for extended leave. This seems hard for it being the beginning of the year. Furthermore, our principal is retiring, so I am nervous about the new one not having everything in place! And I am scared my sub will get a job and I will be left without a sub.... And now as I write this, I am freaking out a bit.
That's so frustrating about that conference! @Kudlica27 how old is that student? Not that it matters, little ones can pick up on a lot of adult conversation too. That's also nerve wracking about getting a new principal. Hopefully he/she will be prepared for the job from the beginning and have their sh** together. Gosh maternity sub stuff is so stressful!!
@felix08 and @SpotConlon will either of you have to have a sub while on leave?
Now that I'm due in November, I can't hoard away all of my stuff before a leave replacement comes in. Big perk though: I get 10 more sick days and two more personal days for leave.
It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most...not where you live, or what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes... There's no dollar sign on a piece of mind, this I've come to know! *ZBB*
@spotconlon I feel your pain on the closets, ha! I am currently typing this from an elevator shaft (or what would be an elevator shaft had they installed an elevator...). Needless to say, I rarely see the light of day during school hours. I shouldn't complain too much, though, because I don't get moved around very often. I know I should do the evals for the fall before the end of this school year, but I honestly don't know if I have time! It seems like as soon as people found out I was going to be out at the beginning of next year, the initial referrals started rolling in...
@kudlica27 I will probably start out the year, too, as long as I can! That will be tough to plan ahead--no sub plans needed is one thing that's nice about my position. I will also have a new boss next year! And don't freak out--I know you care about your classroom, but it is not your responsibility to handle the sub!
@lyndshurt Nope! No sub for me...that's why I do feel a little bad about not getting fall reevals done. I know my work load will be passed off to the other psychs. There were three psychs on maternity leave at the start of this year and it was MISERABLE!! Nothing like more work for the same amount of money.
I am not a teacher, but I am a social worker in a high school. Today cannot end soon enough. Apparently the kids have coined today as "flash day" so they are doing nothing but fighting. 3 fights before school started, two on first lunch shift. I wonder what second lunch and dismissal will bring...
My boss put a sign on my door that says "this week baby is..." and then a picture of whatever produce of the week. One of my 2nd graders was staring at the cantaloupe, then me (barely showing), then back to the picture and she asks "Is your baby an orphan?" I almost did a spit-take, but I asked her what she thought orphan meant. "A baby that has to get adopted," she said. I assured her that no, the baby living in my belly is not an orphan, I'm its parent. I guess she thought that I wasn't actually pregnant, but must be adopting a baby because I don't look round yet.
Totally have to complain about my college students. We went over last class what to expect for the quiz in class today. So if you miss class, it's entirely your responsibility to figure out what you missed either from me or another student. So before the quiz I ask if there any questions - no one has any. Quiz starts and immediately the students that missed class call me over to ask questions. I already gave them a freaking chance to ask questions!
Hey, ladies! Sorry to bump this thread, but Nov. has more college teachers than K-12. When did all of you send your letters to the board of education about maternity leave? I told my principal very early because of my extra appointments and because she knew about the loss. I ask because I know I need to sit down with the union rep to write the letter and figure out dates before that. I'm between 9-9.5 weeks now. Thanks! PS miss you guys!

@NYTino24 I told my principal super early because I am also a PGAL mama. Last time I told them super early and they kept bugging me for paperwork. I am going to notify my HR when I return. I know there is paperwork I have to return, so I want to have it filed out at my next appointment. I am pretty familiar with our union rules/ FMLA rules because it was an issue for out union last year. I would check with your union on how they make you use your sick time & insurance issue while you are out. Good luck!
@Kudlica27 I have to use all sick time first before going unpaid unless the board allows me to save up to 15 days. I only have 36 due to losing days when I was laid off / had to switch districts and my loss. We also have to return at the beginning of a marking period. Our contract expires on June 30 and I don't think much of the maternity policy will change, but you never know... It doesn't specify when we have to notify them. It just says as soon as possible. I have my next regular OB appointment on May 10, so I assume I'll be sending the letter soon after that since that is the end of the first trimester.

So, I got called into a meeting today with my principal to tell me that my classroom (SEI-Int K) is closing. She told me it was based on numbers for next year. So now I am waiting to hear back from my union about more of the details of being an involuntary transfer, what's open, who could be bumped, etc. Best case there's a different grade/classroom in my school that I could bump someone out (not proud of it, but I'd rather stay in my building). Worst case I'm starting mid year in a new building and possibly new grade. I'm trying to stay positive and wait for answers, but to say I'm not stressing packing up my stuff and moving would be a lie.
Anyone else go through this? How was your experience?
@LadyDi711 I have had that happen. I lucked out and something else came open in my building. We are a large enough district that I knew i would have a job, just not where. I thought that it would happen to me this year, but we ended up having enough kids to teach my class. I feel for you. Is it possible that you would know your new classroom sooner than later? I think that would help eliminate some stress. You could maybe plan a bit over the summer? How long are you taking off next year?
@Kudlica27 we have a large district too, so I'm not worried about having a job - just the where. I'm waiting on the list of jobs now but I have to think about second and third choices in case someone above me takes it. At this moment it doesn't look like I'll be in the same building. I'm thinking about coming back around Thanksgiving so potentially moving in as I return -not ideal. Depending on what job I take, moving in is based on when the last person moves out.
@LadyDi711 I plan to come back around the same time. I keep telling myself that they will be crazy no matter what around the holidays. Maybe when the new year (new semester) starts you could change some things the way you like it? I think missing the beginning of the school year is hard no matter what as a teacher. Someone else is setting up all the rules, habits, and expectations. I am hoping you find out soon and can get things set up your way! One positive- if you don't get to move in, no one touches all your stuff! ( I am currently having severe anxiety about someone else touching my stuff, especially my flair pens )
Lol @Kudlica27 thanks for the reassurance! Teacher stuff is important! But you're right, I can just push through one month and then really settle in after that.
@LadyDi711 I was caught in a RIF (reduction in force four times and laid off every time since my districts were small and I didn't have tenure. Now my district has 17 schools and I do have tenure. Do you have dual cert? That's a tough situation to be in, especially starting the year on maternity leave. Will your district move your stuff for you?
This LO is due mid November, so I am worried about someone messing up my class and stuff like @Kudlica27.
@SpotConlon I get out on June 21st. Commiserating with you!

@NYTino24 Yes, I have dual cert in early childhood and ESL so that helps when I see the pool of jobs. From what I've been told, I can be compensated for two days of work for moving. I'll have to ask further if that means just packing or packing and actually bringing boxes to the next school. I don't have tenure yet, but do have professional status. So, I'm not technically laid off just switching positions. I feel for you though- four times going through that must've been so stressful!!
@LadyDi711 Yeah, it was stressful and anxiety provoking. I still get nervous about being transferred or having to switch grades again! It had long last effects (pay cuts every time, loss of sick days, inability to save for retirement just in case I was unemployed...) Anyway, my district will move our stuff for us if it's packed and labeled. You just have to trust them not to break or lose anything. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

@NYTino24 I am so glad to hear from you! You were just on my mind this week! I am thinking about hiding stuff before my sub comes. Maybe you can do the same?
