@kiwi2628 "unexplained" is such a mix of feelings. Knowing how many things have been crossed off the list and struggling with patience while tests continue. It is a rollercoaster of its own. This board has been the most encouragement for me as we continue to wade through the swamp of unexplained. Hope you have more days of hope and encouragement!
@leekat14 I would be so on that ledge with you, so I don't think I can talk you off of it, and I haven't done IVF so no advice, but I wish you confidence and peace in whatever decision you take!
@beachbunnyxo123 what?! Wrong sperm?! is there an old thread you can share? It hadn't crossed my mind at all as being a possibility. I haven't spent much time thinking of what could go wrong, I feel like it is like bungee jumping, just got to close my eyes and jump. See my take below...
AFM, so many things going on. We finally are moving from the dreaded "unexplained" diagnosis. Got our results from the endometrial biopsy, and now "chronic endometritis", basically my uterus is mad as h-e-doublehockeysticks at me, and I have been oblivious for years. Good news is the treatment is just 14 days of super strong antibiotics taken during WTO, with complete abstaining, then back to TTC as normal.
*tw Downside, means I am basically out this cycle because 1) we haven't made my ute happy yet 2) there is a high risk of mc with this diagnosis, so even if we are SS that gets KU after 20 months, I would be so worried, and doctor said I would be under careful monitoring during the pregnancy as it can cause many complications. tw*
Now with the new diagnosis and the timing of the meds, I don't want to miss a cycle next month, so I may test early this cycle and see if we can sneak a few days of antibiotics into the end of this cycle to make sure we are clear by 12CD in case I O early.
So to join the TI vs IUI conversation, we had planned to move to IUI next cycle May/June, and our RE gave us an increase of 6% chance on top of what we have now to add an IUI into our mix. Now with the new diagnosis and the timing of the meds, I wonder if we should go back to TI for a few cycles before going to IUI. We our OOP for all our treatments, but we had already planned on the $ for the next cycle. So now I am having a running pro/con list in my head and haven't talked to MH about the possibility of taking IUI off the table for next cycle.
On a side note, why the heck does it take a highly specialized doctor to figure out someone has an insanely strong infection (that apparently is fairly common) that needs super drugs to kill? Wouldn't this just be part of a routine pap smear since they are in there already?
And final side note, thank you to each one of you that encouraged me to seek out a new RE. I joined this community when I was at a loss as to what we should do. Your encouragement got us to a new RE, had me so prepared for the consultation as my own advocate, and after 8 months of treatment from REs we finally have a diagnosis. (Who knows if this is the big fix, but at least it is a healthy move.) So THANK YOU for being awesome, encouraging, scrappy, science-backed, and sometimes snarky when needed community!
@ramzlau Congrats on finally getting a solid dx!!! FX your body can refresh after the antibiotics and you can GKTFU ASAP It goes to show that every doctor is going to have a different perspective, do different tests, and possibly reach a different conclusion. We all need to be our biggest advocates and fight for the answers and solutions we deserve. I'm glad you could finally do that for yourself and move forward in a big way

@ramzlau I'm sorry to hear about your infection, but that's good it sounds like it can be overcome pretty easily and quickly.
I'm so with you on the anger/irritation at how you need a specialist to find out about your infection, and about a lot of IF issues. It seems totally insane to me that ALL the diagnostics for IF aren't covered by OBs (in terms of insurance and knowledge-base). I feel almost like they're treating IF issues as if they exist in a vacuum, which is complete and utter BS since so many IF issues are related to other health issues.
I'm glad you found the right RE and got some answers. Also, totally unrelated, but I've been listening to the podcast you recommended and I love it so much--tons of great info in it! Thank you again for sharing it.
@beachbunnyxo123 I understand your paranoia and I made jokes that they'd mix up the samples to H, but they have processes and protocols in place to prevent that. They are checking and rechecking every step of the way to the point where you're like "Am I verifying this AGAIN? Just do it already!" So try to push those thoughts out if you can or you'll make yourself crazy!
@ramzlau I'm so glad you got an answer! That is crazy, though! I guess routine GYN appointments don't check that stuff? They should be checking when it's clear there's something wonky in there!
AFM My nurse emailed my updated FET schedule so now we transfer on May 31! Just a 20-day delay from the original plan
Me: late 30s | H: early 30s TTC #1 since April 2015 RE Dx: Fibroids, surgery Jan 2016 IUI #1 and #2, Nov/Dec 2016, BFN IVF March 2017: ER - 5R/3M/3F, 1 PGS normal Polyp removed May 2017 FET May 2017 - BFP! Baby boy born 2/2/18
@ramzlau I'm so glad you got it figured out, and even better that it can be treated! I'm glad you are seeing a new RE. The reason this stuff isn't checked routinely is because it's quite invasive (as you know since you had the biopsy). The pap smear only takes cells from your cervix. In order to access the endometrial tissue to check, the doctor would have to dilate the cervix to remove endometrial cells which as you know can be quite painful. I imagine the pain-to-benefit ratio comes down on the no testing side for most people until they are experiencing an issue like IF. It's the same reason people aren't directed to get HSGs at the beginning of TTC but rather only if they have issues -- it's an invasive and painful procedure that benefits relatively few people, so they don't do them unless there's evidence of an issue.
Now, why people aren't given the option of a regular AMH/FSH test by their OBGYN, that I cannot explain. It's a blood test.
(edit) @eggplantface Yayyy that is so close! FX for you.
@leekat14 I know freedom doesn't deliver on a Monday. I think it depends on when you would need to start the meds. I wonder if your RE can tell you that? @eggplantface What what? Hooray for a May date!
Good things are going to happen in May... I can feel it.
@leekat14. We had to do CF testing due to DHs azoo, as well as a test for y-chromosome microdeletions. They will probably include the CF in my screening as well, just bc we did it for him, but his came back negative anyway so... <img src="https://us.v-cdn.net/5020794/uploads/editor/b5/du8kig253uqt.gif" alt=""> I told our doctor we probably want to try and transfer all so she recommended pgs so we're not wasting time/money/transfers/heartache on non-viable embies. But that's between you and your doc. She also only does frozen. GL with starting your cycle!!!
@haylsbayls so sorry to hear about your dx, but at least you have one! I know of at least two women to had the procedure *TW* both said it was ndb, one is currently ku and the other has her outside nugget! /*TW* fx it's all pretty straightforward for you ❤
@ramzlau so glad you have a dx! Funny like no one talks about it, but that was the first thing my (Napro) doctor suspected for me, and pretty much just wanted to start me on abx just in case. Did take a zpack eventually, and something else around the same time as my SHG - Turns out the SA might have been a clue! Lol. But yeah, the endometrial biopsy is a little more involved than the pap like @adirat said, but at least now you know! Fx it's a relatively "quick fix"!!
@businesswife I love hearing those stories, thank you for that! I agree, as much as it sucks, having a dx that can *possibly* be fixed is better than no answers at all. FX for your DH's procedure and results.

Spoiler for political stuff that impacts women and men with IF.
Those following the news today will note that the house passed new healthcare reform. It will now move on to the senate. Under this new mandate, many insurance companies could once again have the ability to refuse coverage for those with a "pre existing condition". Prior to ACA, infertility was considered a pre existing condition. Particularly if a plan offered any sort of IF coverage, then a man or woman with a IF Dx would be denied when applying. I'm personally not up for arguing about this kind of thing - I don't care who any of you voted for or how you feel about ACA. I just thought you might be interested to hear about this development and perhaps keep an eye on it.
According to this list having any infertility treatments within the previous 2 years would be considered a preexisting condition, even if you have no intention of continuing treatments. Other preexisting conditions include pregnancy for "self, spouse, or significant other," endometriosis, and polycystic ovaries.
Just a reminder, insurance companies would only be able to deny an individual seeking coverage outside of their employer in the states that apply for a waiver. However, because state requirements drive employer requirements, even those receiving insurance through their employer could see skimpier plans with less coverage in an effort to save money and take advantage of these exclusions.

@adirat is there a test for hostile CM? I'm just curious!
@ramzlau glad to hear you finally got your DX and it can be treated quickly! I had an EB in January and my gyn only recommended it after I kept bothering her that my irregular bleeding wasn't getting better. It wasn't a pleasant procedure as I'm sure you know, but I'm glad I did it. I wouldn't have thought about it until she suggested it.
Me: 31 DH: 32 Dating since: 11/17/2001 Married: 9/26/2009 TTC: June 2016
@BertieMeetsGertie There are a couple ways to assess hostile CM. One is a postcoital test conducted 1-2 hours after having sex. Not all REs perform this (there seems to be debate about its diagnostic value) but you can see if the sperm are still hanging out or if they're all dead. Another is to have CM checked for antisperm antibodies (ejaculate should also be checked for antibodies as an explanation for low count). I've also heard that you can test the pH of cervical mucus but I don't know much about that or how much variability there is from person to person.
@adirat girl you are straight fire with your knowledge. I found that info super helpful cause I never even realized that was possible before but now that I think about it I think I've seen you post about this before cause it's ringing a bell!
@kiwi2628 hi 29, unexplained IF, non-smoker, minimal drinker, overall healthy, normal bloodwork values, normal SA for my H also here (except my fsh was slightly elevated) I just laughed to myself cause it was like reading my own stats. Interesting to see the breakdown like that thanks for sharing!!
@ramzlau so glad you switched and found an RE who actually gave you answers!!! Sorry that it messes cycle plans up though! And the article I saw wasn't a thread on here it was actually on Facebook something like IF horror stories
@eggplantface thank you for the validation and reassurance!! I know it is so irritational but hearing the procedure makes me feel better!!!
@haylsbayls so sorry I missed you in my other comment post. I'm sorry that you find yourself here but I know you'll feel supported all these ladies are amazing!
@beachbunnyxo123 (my estrogen was mildly increased but overall everyhting was 'normal' and they think I O early...BUT WHO IS COUNTING)...also it took me literally 6 tries to write 'cointing' because I had 4 glasses of wine because FUCK IT THIS SHI YOLO and I am having a week.
@adirat (I don't know how to do a snippet) but regarding your "All the knowledge I wish I never had to acquire amirite ladies?" So feel ya. I saw a lady in the waiting room at my RE's office and she had a binder with her. I was like oh man, that is someone who has a wealth of experience with this stuff, probably more than she ever wanted to know. Made me wonder how many of you ladies take a binder with you to your RE appointments? I had my laptop and a few lose papers, but just not the same.
@beachbunnyxo123 and @vflux33 I also share the wrong sperm fear, even though I know it's highly unlikely. Thanks @eggplantface for the reassurance. I'm sure the first time with IUI is the scariest when you're not sure how the whole sperm to uterus journey can go and what could go wrong trying to get it there.
@kiwi2628 I am jealous your RE has that algorithm. I find the statistics fascinating and wish I could plug my own numbers in. Someone needs to develop an app for this and become rich. Also, hugs for your crap week. Sometimes some wine is just what you need.
@ramzlau That is great you finally were able to get a diagnosis (even though IF still sucks). GL on your decision of TI vs IUI. Doesn't it feel like with IF we are constantly make decisions?
I share all your anger with the OB/GYNs not being able to diagnose IF. I do understand there are certain IF diagnoses that are hard to catch, but like @adirat said - I'm especially confused about why they don't perform all the blood tests they should when it seems something is wrong, or why they don't give you the option to run those. I have PCOS and had really irregular periods and acne when off BC, and I can't understand how no one could diagnose me until I was trying to get KU.
Re: the wrong sperm thing with then amount of signatures and "checks" in place it's highly unlikely you'll get the wrong sperm. At our clinic DH signed a form confirming the sperm goes to me, initialed every label for every tube that it had the correct name and DOB and watched them put the labels on each tube. Both myself, the nurse and the RE checked the tube and signed forms confirming that it was the right sperm for me pre-IUI.
I don't have a binder but just this morning I threw out a notebook with months worth of pee sticks taped inside. I never thought that is something I would have owned/created....

@LadyMillil thanks for the info! Of course I will compulsively ask the staff before DH gives his sample that we sign off on everything just like every other clinic so it doesn't just come in a tube ready to go!
So I spoke with the nurse yesterday, we are gonna do femara and IUI when af comes. She said that I will come in for cd 12 US, BD the night we trigger and then come back 36 hours later for DH to produce a sample and so IUI. I didn't realize they did it all right then and there.
@ramzlau I should probably switch to a binder --my folder is overflowing!
